applied to 22 programs... offered interviews at 16... interviewed at 11... ranked 10.

why did i match? hmmm... i wouldnt say my boards score is great (its actually quite low relative to the others on here). honestly, i would say that i matched because of my interview-ability. alot of people will say that its all about scores when the match comes around... but, i would argue that the interview is another KEY to matching. its vital that you are yourself during the interview... let the interviewer know as much as you can about yourself during the 15 minutes that you are with them. i dont think i "pop" on paper, but i think i did a good job interviewing... and, i think thats how i matched.

congratulations to everyone.

Just to clarify, none of my research involved shooting anything with lasers

Lasers are only allowed to be used by D.M.D.'s, hence the two guys here from Temple who did laser research. I thought you would have known this by now armor.

I'll post a little more "anonymous" info about some of the guys at Baylor that matched.

6 total D4 applicants.
2 applicants from c/o 2009 that did intern years.

8/8 matched (Seattle, OU, Baylor, Detroit Mercy, UF-Gainesville, UK, Alleghany, Sinai)

I can only speak for the D4 guys for boards and apps etc.
Avg board was around 90 (few above, few below)
5 of 6 D4s did 3 externships or more. 4/6 did 5.
At least 4 applied to 20+ programs.
I think all of us got our 4th or higher rank.
Class rank was top 15% for 5/6 I think.
# of interviews averaged around 8-9. (15 high end, 6 low end)
Most guys went on pretty much every interview.
All of us were gung ho about omfs from the start and signed up for externships starting during the D2-D3 transition summer.

I think the best advice for those that want to pursue omfs is to get started early with externships and stay busy during your breaks.

Programs applied to/interviews received/interviews attended/programs ranked:25/12/12/12

Temple results:

5/6 matched:
Loma Linda 4 yr
Cook County
Loyola
Montefiore 4yr
Thomas Jefferson 4yr

The 3 interns from last years Temple (2009) class matched as well.

The military guys matched 2/3 as well (1 army, 2 air force)

For the D4's: Most went on 3+ externships. I personally did one between D2 and D3 and everone else crammed the rest between 3-4th year summer.

Places externed included but are not limited to:
Temple, Jefferson, UIC, Loma Linda, USC, Christiana Care, LSU-NO

Class ranks were all pretty much in the top 15%, and board scores ranged from 84-91. Average board score was probably an 87. Everyone is doing a 4 year program from the D4 year.

Number of interviews ranged from 1-15. Most everyone went on all of them. For some perspective for others applying in later years, the guy who got one interview also got matched, so don't ever give up hope.

Everyone matched into their top 3 or better.

Like southomfs said, most of us were gung ho OMFS from the start and started our CV's early so they sparkled for PASS.

Congrats to everyone!

Corolla and armor****, congrats. If you guys spend half as much time reading omfs related stuff as you do on these boards/on your blogs, you'll make out just fine.

OMFSKook, congrats. Also, to prepare for residency here, forget the books until you get here. I would just get naked, bend over, and run thru a cornfield backwards as fast as you can. BTW, Costco is having a sale on industrial size tubs of lube. Welcome to Highland:D

industrial size tubs of lube? hahahaha would u recommend the water based or petroleum based? haha

P.S. I am glad I didn't know everyone's stats beforehand. I would have been discouraged, as you can tell.

OU matched 3/3.

Just so you know, there is no "University of OU" My mistake. I'm going to be an oral surgeon?

UCLA did well this year too. Here is where we are all going next year.

UCLA x 2
UCSF x 2
USC (6-year)
Emory (6-year)
Case Western
UConn (6-year)
BU

Well done boys/girls.
Anyone knows about OMFS PGY2 or 3 or 4 positions out there? (i.e. resident left now filling up the post).
any info/lead would be appreciated. New thread?

Very impressive

I'm not an Pacific student but I think they did an impressive job. I wouldn't consider none of the above schools spectacular except for maybe Emory & UConn.

UCLA x 2 -- inbreeding, not full-scope, country-club that many students want to go to (impressive in a way, i guess)
UCSF x 2 -- program undergoing major transition (PD and Chair both stepping down); no one wanted to go there (2 unmatched positions)
USC (6-year) -- self-taught program (let's not kid ourselves here); not good
Emory (6-year) -- great, busy
Case Western -- heard it's good
UConn (6-year) -- heard good things
BU --busy, easy to get into (due to the fact that residents have to pay tuition), fairly good 4-yr program

Rain down on the UCLA parade. 2 inbreds though, sends the wrong message. UCSF is thanking god that UCLA did pick up 2 spots though. I'm sure they will do well there while they rebuild. They will all be oral surgeons though, and my future colleagues, so I'm proud of them!

i hate it when some idiot (your grammar is terrible) dental student expresses his thoughts on whether a program is "good" or not. I feel relieved that you've "heard good things" about UConn and Case Western. Is Case a good program if you want to do radical neck dissections? Probably not. But if your interested in cosmetics, the PD completed a fellowship in cosmetics, so you'll get more exposure than other places. What about Carle for Cosmetics? No, but the PD did a two year fellowship in Oncology and Microvascular surgery with Ord. So unless your at the program living the lifestyle, shut up.

well said frank

not well said there frank, at case our chair is fellowship trained in cancer from michigan and we do open necks all the time.
