I don't know much about their EM program, I rotated there in another specialty. But, the transportation issue is serious there. Very limited parking options, but I think they were planning a new parking lot-- don't know the current sit. No nearby T. Most people live off a busline. Otherwise, you have to take a bus to the train station, some of which are a little scary. Not a great neighborhood to walk around in. I also thought this was a major drawback, especially when you are keeping odd hours as a resident.

Yeah, this just struck me as weird. Why place a major county facility off the main public transit grid (i.e. the T)? Boston is not a city I would ever have any interest in commuting to work by car. Love the T, hate the roads.

Got Nebraska today too, and declined. What the hec man, November the 23rd??? Were they really thinking anyone would have any openings in their schedule at this point? Only the people with few invites can take advantage of such a last minute offer, and I am not going to bump any of my others for U. Nebraska even if I did get my masters there!! Oh well.

My final list of interviews..now to remain unchanged save a midwest snowstorm that strands my rental car somewhere between Rochester and Pittsburgh!!

LSU-Baton Rouge, done, and a very nice place with great people

I agree, Texas Tech is as good if not better than many of the big name programs. I am an intern here and everything about this program has exceeded my expectations. I would be happy to answer any questions in a new thread.

I am adding Hennepin to my interview list.

Still haven't heard from 4 programs...am going to assume I am not getting interviews at those places. I can't believe some programs were still offering interviews today!

For the simple reason that it was one of my first interviews offers, so I just did it along with a couple of other nyc interviews pretty early on. I got downstate a lot later was already trimming down my list at this point...if i had gotten them all at the same time, i would have probably chosen downstate instead.

ditto!! I think some of these programs hire some nut job to send out all the rejections and that person is probably someone who was rejected from every friend, family member, and job in their entire life! And they get off to sending the same message over and over again in hopes that some poor chap will write back and complain. Thats how they get their satisfaction you know....sort of like a flasher who is only gratified by the terrified respondent!!

I guess you can tell I have the month off and am just waiting between interviews!

I suppose they can afford to be this way since they are the only academic EM program within about 250 miles, and the only one in the huge medical mecca of Houston. Someone needs to open up an EM program perhaps at Baylor next door and give them a little friendly competition.

I too am on that wait list. Perhaps they should open up some more spots?

Baylor will not have an EM program in the next 10 years. That place is run by surgery guys. UTMB is in the works, but at least a few years off.

If you guys want to discuss further, we can start a new thread - just wanted to set the record straight.

Pardon me for butting in...

Anyone interviewing at Scott & White, drop me a PM before you come and we can get together. I love it here and will be more than happy to give you as much of the low down as an intern can.

BTW, UTMB hired one of our faculty to be their residency program director (and another to be division chair). They're committed to opening up a program as soon as they can. 1-2 years is the time frame I've heard.

Take care and good luck!

Jeff

I might be ignorant on the whole Texas thing but what it U Texas MB? Sorry for my ignorance...

University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston established in the 1890's. The first Texas medical school, thus the unusual name.

The voters of Texas approved a constitutional ammendment back in the late 1800s that authorized the creation of a state university (UT in Austin) and a Medical Branch of that university (UTMB). They were in different cities as a result of a political compromise. At the time, Galveston was the cultural mecca of Texas.

I really should have been a history major. It's so much more fun than that worthless psych degree I have.

Take care,
Jeff

BTW, Texas A&M was already well established as a land grant institution by the time of UT's creation. Hince the oft repeated (at least in College Station) that we are THE University of Texas. Of course, Baylor was around before us, but we pass that off by saying they are a private school and thus don't count. :)

Hola Jeff,
I actually heard from a faculty member who is a candidate for new faculty position there at UTMB's soon-to-be EM program and he told me back in October that he had been led to believe that UTMB was going to take people for a class this year outside the match. That place really could support an EM program with its level I, its helo, and the huge prison population!! I did my PA training there and my month in the ED was very good. I remember working with a doc named Kent Nasser I believe who taught me many things that month that I still use today. I loved that ED but it was heavily run by their head trauma surgeon. I don't know how the surgery/EM climate would work there now. The only problem with a program at UTMB is that you have to find a place to live that is safe! I lived off the island for the simple reason that there are 2 festivals annually that wreak havoc on the city, one being Mardi Gras, and the other being the Kappa Fest. I didn't even consider UTMB for medical school because I did not want my kids to have to live there. Its a city that is very much like New Orleans used to be where it looks all touristy and fun on the surface but underneath it all is a world of corruption and crime like few other cities. Its a scary place quite honestly. Jeff knows what I mean, although he may not agree completely!!

Clarification: No Aggie would be caught saying that UT is THE University of Texas. The "t.u." is actually meant as "Texas University".

Much of the "sparring" between Ags and t-sips is linked to land ownership and taxes. At one time (I know I'll get burned for this), the congress was trying to shut down A&M and turn it into an insane asylum. Lawrence Sullivan (Sully) Ross convinced them otherwise, and thus A&M persists (even though our football team would beg to differ).

I don't really (and honestly never did) get caught up in this, but my boots just won't let me live it down. ;)

Actually, a comparison between New Orleans and G-town is pretty unfair. The size alone of the 2 cities precludes Galveston from having the crime/corruption problem that New Orleans has. The main problem with galveston is the proximity of crack houses with million dollar historic homes. It really is a block-to-block comparison. That being said, there are definitely areas on the island with little to no crime. A recent trend of upscale housing construction and commercial real estate improvement has started (slowly) to change the appearance and reputation of the city in a positive way. Like in most cities, a little bit of common sense and precaution go a long way.

'stain

I never felt unsafe walking the streets of Galveston, no matter what the time of night. And living as close to the beach as the hospital had its advantages. If only the mighty Mississippi silt flowed the other way in the gulf and the waters were blue instead of brown. And that damn humidity. And all the tourists. And the fact that to go anywhere, you have to time your departure around Houston's rush hours.

Cancelled Denver and Boston MC today...

Ectopic, if there's any chance you wouldn't mind living in Indy, I would accept their waitlist offer. I interviewed there yesterday and the program is PHENOMENAL! Any questions, feel free to PM me.

Good luck to all on the trail!

Thanks for the offer. I have heard that this is one of the premeire programs in the country. All that being said I have a family "situation" which will prevent me from living in Indy.

BTW i was waitlisted today at UVA and rejected from Bellevue. Its cool the family situation has me looking below the mason-dixon line.
