Here's the thread for this years Ortho Application cycle, I personally didn't see one so figured I'd make this to help share information!

Please add to the thread if you've received any info from programs, I'll do my best to update it as interview dates are sent out!

Good luck to everyone applying to Ortho residency this year!

does anyone know if Texas programs mainly give preference to in-state applicants?

does anyone know if Texas programs mainly give preference to in-state applicants?
UTSD accepts up to 3 of their students (out of 7 residents) so obviously percentage wise that’s a lot. The upcoming class has 3/7 from UTSD and the class before that had 2/7 from UTSD. I can’t speak for the other schools, although I did interview at San Antonio and I think only one of the residents there was from their dental school but don’t quote me on that.

Hey everyone,
I am working on filling out my application right now. I'm not sure if I should include experiences from dental school only or if I should go back and list everything from undergrad as well. Those that have applied before, what did you do and what do you think is necessary? Thanks!

Can anyone confirm that the following programs are match exclusive?
-Indiana
-Michigan
-U of P
-Texas @ Houston
-UIC
-Marquette

I wanted to apply to these schools but also am wanting to apply to some non-match programs. If I apply to some non-match programs is it even worth it to apply to these?

Also, I have another question that I can't seem to find a clear answer to. I have not taken the GRE or the INBDE as of yet, however, some of the programs I wanted to apply to have ADEA PASS deadlines of Aug 1st, Aug 15th and so on. There is a very slim chance I take both of those exams by those dates. So as for the programs on the PASS search engine stating "Must submit official INBDE results to ADEA PASS: Yes"
Can these score results be submitted after program's respective ADEA PASS deadlines? I've tried contacting some schools with no luck. I basically want to know if I should still apply to those programs or if there is no point unless I have my test scores in PASS before their deadlines.

It depends on what it is. I did list some things from undergrad that I felt was relevant for my residency application but I kept it focused on the dental school stuff

Personally, I don’t think the GRE should take more than a couple of weeks to study for as it’s very much just a harder version of the SAT. I would try taking it ASAP before the Aug 1st application deadline. I took boards when it was part 1 and 2 and programs seemed to only want part 1 scores when we were applying and would accept part 2 scores later on with the assumption that we’d pass. I took part two in August of 2020 and by that point I had already submitted all of my applications. With your boards being integrated into one exam, it’s hard to say whether programs will have the same level of leniency as we had for our part 2 scores, I would personally contact those programs to ask.

Matching to a program is somewhat of a numbers game if your rank isn’t in the top 10. You want to maximize the number of programs you interview at to maximize your chances of matching. Do your best to put yourself in a position to get as many interviews as possible

Also in regards to match exclusive programs, the detailed program pages within the ADEA PASS portal should answer your questions about whether the program is match exclusive

When you fill out the information on the application for these sections, one of the options is something like "Have not taken but will in the future" or something. For INDBE - its not that important. It is pass/fail and they just want you to pass before you matriculate in their residency program. GRE - much more important since its actually one of the parameters they use to filter out candidates. If you only have time to take one before the deadlines, make it the GRE.

What is everyone's experience with not remembering or knowing who a supervisor is for a particular experience? I see that the section is not a required section on the application. Does it look bad to just leave it blank? Have any programs actually contacted these references to find out more or see if it was legit?

Thank you so much for creating this thread! Kind of strange nobody made one earlier. Is anybody else having trouble keeping up with all the different supplementals each school require?

When I was applying I wrote a list in a notebook of which schools I was applying to, their fee, any supplemental/extra stuff they needed, the physical addresses and email addresses of where everything extra had to be sent, etc. and DUE DATES for all of the above. Then I could cross things off as I finished them.

Thanks for the advice! I'm doing something similar to that. Also when in the application process would you consider it pretty late to apply?

I would say try and have everything in in the month of July. A few interview invites go out in August and a lot in early Sept so you know that means they started looking at them in July/August.

Thank you so much for your help, and congrats on matching your #1.
Could you please tell us your story? How many cycles did you apply for? and how did you get a lot of interviews? Have you done an orthodontic fellowship? Your advice?

Thank you

Hi there!

I applied for the first time while I was a 4th year in dental school and matched my first cycle. However, it took me 3 times of applying to get into dental school so I am not a stranger to reapplicant life lol. I think I applied to 11 schools and I got 7 interviews, went to 6 (had to turn one down due to conflicts with other interviews). I did not do a fellowship.

My advice is -- first and foremost you have to have the numbers to get your app looked at. Usually top 10 class rank, involved in research, leadership positions, volunteering, good letters of rec, etc. After that, they want people that they think are going to be people they want to hang out with 40 hrs a week for the next 2-3 years and get along with. So at the interviews, have fun, be yourself, tell them what you are passionate about, go to everything in person if you can, go to the socials they have, let the residents come pick you up at the airport if they offer even if you would prefer an uber, etc. Every single moment of your visit is part of the interview. Go to your schools ortho department and meet all the faculty and residents, make a good impression, ask questions, be polite, etc. It is a whirlwind of factors that will get you matched.

Is there a page limit on the personal statement? Mine is about 1.5 pages right now. Is that fine?

Highly recommending limiting it to a page. Admissions has to read through a lot of these, last thing you want to do is bore them

This forum is awfully quiet this year

Did really poor on the GRE: 145 quant, 150 verbal. Am I better off applying only to non-GRE schools now? Or should I still input these unofficial scores into PASS. Just wondering if these scores look worse than not taking the GRE at all. Class rank 33/103, 3.57 GPA, ortho leadership, strong letters of rec and personal statement, research experience. Feeling pretty down right now. Thank you in advance for your response.

I’m sorry you are bummed about your score - the GRE is definitely not an easy exam. Others may disagree, but here are some of my thoughts about the GRE. For the last few years, I wondered how important GRE scores really are when applying to ortho. I saw people post on SDN saying that it really wasnt all that important in the grand scheme of things, but I found it hard to believe that someone could know for sure how important the GRE is to all program directors. To try to understand it a bit better, I decided to make a scatter plot of GRE scores compared to interview rate (number of interview invites received/number of schools applied to) of all applicants from SDN posts over the last 5 years where that information was shared. I also included the GRE scores of additional residents who I know personally. I wound up with around 50 data points - I realize that this isn’t a simple random sample of residents/applicants so there are limitations for sure, but I think it gives useful information nontheless. I wish I could have compared GRE scores to match rate but people only post on SDN if they get in, so I didn‘t have that information.

The results of the scatter plot were interesting. There was no correlation between interview rate and GRE scores (r value was -.08). Personally, I think it is reasonable to assume that a program wouldn’t even interview someone whose GRE scores would disqualify them from getting into their program, so I think this information is promising for those who don’t feel comfortable about their GRE scores. I know there are a couple schools that have GRE cutoffs so I wouldn’t apply to those if your scores are lower than their cutoffs, but my advice would be to apply to the same schools you were going to. I think that most program directors understand the research that shows that GRE scores have little to do with resident performance. That being said, I have definitely heard of some of my friends being asked about their GRE scores in interviews so I would be prepared to talk about that! As a general rule, I think the right thing to do when there is a part of your application that you are uncomfortable with is to apply to more schools, not less. I would maybe even cast your net wider than you had previously planned. I know it is expensive to apply to a ton of schools, but it is less expensive than having to wait a year and reapply. It sounds like you are doing a lot of things right - keep your head up and trust things will work out!

Interestingly enough, I did the same scatterplot for class rank and there was a pretty significant correlation between class rank and interview rate. Not ground breaking information, but a confirmation of what people have been saying on SDN for a long time.

Good luck this cycle!

For those applying this year and part of the class that has to take the INBDE, do you guys mind posting what programs have given you a deadline to submit a pass report to them by?

So far I have:
Columbia, October 1st
UCSF, November 1st
University of Michigan, November 11th

Anybody hear back from any programs regarding interview invites yet?
I haven’t heard back from anyone yet. I’m assuming it’s a little early since deadlines are not until late august and Sept. I was thinking maybe San Antonio would send emails soon by looking at previous years email dates but idk.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows the programs that are conducting their interviews virtually. I know UCSF is, but what about the rest?

Don’t feel down. That test is not easy and everyone would agree with me when I say it’s not reflective of your academic performance. What I noticed this year is how colleges are shifting away from the GRE. I feel like they’re realizing how a waste of time it is. For instance, UIC required the GRE last year with at least a 50th percentile on each section but this year it’s not required and it can be substituted with NBDE passing score or even the DAT or ADAT. This is from what I understood comparing this cycle and last year’s.
Bottom line, apply if you can, shoot your shot. Sounds like you’ve got a solid application!

I know - I hope people start talking more! I feel like I have been helped so much by everyone’s conversations in years past.
I’m trying to shake things up here haha

Anyone applying to Nebraska? I submitted their Pass application but havent seen any email yet from them regarding any supplemental/payment link or instructions. Their website mentions there will be one sent after receive the Pass app.

Yeah, I applied. They sent an email saying they received the application about 2 weeks after I submitted it and then they'll send a second email with a link about a week after that for the payment.

For the NYU application, when I log onto the NYU portal, the status for my PASS transcripts still says "awaiting" even though they have been received by ADEA PASS. Is anyone else having this issue?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows the programs that are conducting their interviews virtually. I know UCSF is, but what about the rest?
They updated it on the website, saying Interviews during the 2022-23 admissions season will be conducted in-person.

Some programs want us to submit DAT scores through PASS... any idea how to do that? the DAT is not an option for standardized tests

I'm struggling with this as well. Emailed Alabama asking a couple days ago and still no response.

Have you guys received completion emails from the colleges you applied to? I have only received from half the schools I have applied to so far. Not sure if I should wait more or email each school to confirm.

I would say that’s on par for me as well. About half the schools have sent me a verification email.

A few days ago, someone posted on this forum asking about their chances of matching to ortho. I wanted to respond to their post, but I think the post has now been deleted. The post went something along the lines of the following:

The applicant was not applying straight out of school
GRE Scores were 160/166, 5 in AWA
DAT score was a 24 AA
Class rank was 14/100
The applicant graduated at the top of their class in undergrad.
The applicant had no experience doing research (The applicant was not intending on specializing during dental school)
The applicant felt they did not have great extracurriculars, but I think they said they had around 200 hours of involvement in an extracurricular activity at their dental school.
Letters of recommendation were received from 3 professionals who the dentist had worked with - not from any faculty from the applicant's dental school.

The applicant shared this quick overview of their application and then asked if they had a chance of matching, since the applicant had no experience in research and felt somewhat uncomfortable about their extracurriculars and letters.

Whoever wrote this post (or really anybody with questions about their apps), feel free to DM me and if you would like, I can offer my thoughts on your application.

Over the last year, I created a calculator using historical applicant data (I referenced this in an earlier post) that attempts to predict how many interviews an applicant may receive given the number of programs to which the applicant applied. Using data published by the Dental Match, an estimate of the applicant's chances of matching can be made using the predicted number of interviews given by the calculator. This is not a definitely not a perfect tool (as there are so many unpredictable human elements that go into matching) but I hope that it at least gives some insight for individuals to see where they roughly stand. People may say that it is pointless or too difficult to try to predict someone's chances of matching (and they are probably right in many respects), however if the applicant has a rough idea of how many interviews they can expect (and the associated chance of matching) given their application and the number of schools they applied to, the applicant can make a more educated decision on how many programs to which the applicant should apply.

To whoever wrote the initial post, sorry for not responding before you took down the post. Like I said, DM me if you would like some feedback on your app.

Yes, all applicants are invited.
I applied but haven’t gotten an email, don’t know if I should email them to confirm that my application is complete ?
