Hi everyone.
I'm a 19 years old student from Portugal. I'm studying to become a doctor.
I'd like to meet pre-medical student from other countries to share experiences, talk about future goals in life and career and to make news friends.
Looking for people my age, male or female.
Send my a private message and possibly we can exchange email!

Hi, and welcome to hSDN! I don't think I've seen you around... :D

Well, I'm a student in the United States about to start college. I don't know what exactly I want to do quite yet, but I'm interested in learning about different health care careers so I joined the forum.

How does one become a physician in Portugal, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Well, in Portugal you stay in school until you're 18 years old.
Then you enter (or not) a University/ Faculty.
In Medicine, we stay in Medical School/ Faculty of Medicine (or whatever...) for 6 years. Then you're a medical intern for a couple of years - until you finish your speciality (e.g. Cardiologist). That takes another 4 to 7 years.

I want to welcome you to H.SDN. Congratulation with an acceptance from a medical school in Portugal. I am sure you will become a great doctor one day!

Why did you want to become a doctor? Were your parents doctor?

Ah, so you can enter a medical school right after you turn eighteen? That's interesting.

Do you speak Portuguese too? I have a friend majoring in that (and Spanish). I've always thought it was a nice language to listen to, even though I couldn't understand what was being said... XD

Hola Mamacita !!! Comoestus?

Tennisball80 é bonito! <-- The most valid statement in the world.

I took Spanish and French, but not Portuguese. I wanted to in college, but the instructor that taught it quit or something... ):

Well, in fact my father, my aunt, my 2 cousins and my older brother are all doctors...
But I want to be a doctor since I remember! I like to do Volunteering, I like science... I guess that helps! :)

Here in Portugal, we enter a medical school after we turn 18.
Then, when you are 23-24 years old you become a medical intern and at 27-31 you become a specialist (e.g. Cardiologist or Surgeon).

Of course I speak Portuguese, it's my official language!
Quero dizer olá e desejar felicidades a todos os que lerem esta mensagem!

Do you have sit for an entrance exam for each medical school? Or you have a standardized exam to apply to every medical school?

He have 3 (in the past were 2) standardized exams. The mean of the those exams is the subject to apply to every medical school.

Huh, so even though you guys start medical school earlier than most Americans, it still takes about the same length of time (give or take a few years)... Interesting.

Portuguese is so pretty! XD My friend would like to study abroad there (or Brazil) eventually.

well, yes, and that's because medical schools take 6 years in most countries in Europe. as i know, in US, medical scools are 4 years long, right?

4 years for undergrad, 4 years for medical school, 3-5 years for residency.

It's pretty long.

Where in Portugal are you from?

I'm not from Portugal, I'm from Georgia: Republic of Georgia, Caucasus.

:)

In Portugal that would be 6 years for medical school and 4-7 years for residency.

In which year are you?

I am starting the first year of undergrad. Although the path would be long, I think it's absolutely worth it to become a doctor.

Where in Portugal are you from? Lisbon?

Are you currently studying medicine in Georgia? Or are you in the U.S. now and studying medicine? :)

No. I'm from Porto. And you?

I will be in Oklahoma, U.S. for college. :)

Where is your favorite place in the U.S? Have you been to U.S. before?

I haven't! I've been in Spain, France, Italy, Holland, Brazil, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic... But never the US! Maybe I'm going to NY this year, but I don't know yet... Have you been outside the US?

I have been to Asia and Canada. :D

How many languages do you speak?

Yeah, currently I'm in Georgia. And in 1 year I'll get my MD degree, after that I'll take residency. I'm still thinking about passing USMLE steps and doing residency in US. But I don't know it for sure yet :)

moreira, what about you? which year of studying? :)

2nd year of Med school.
Remember that in Portugal is 6 years for medical school + 4-7 years for residency, it is NOT 4 years for undergrad + 4 years for medical school + 3-5 years for residency.

I only speak 2, but I can understand 4 or 5... :)

Remember that in Portugal is 6 years for medical school + 4-7 years for residency,

yes, same is in Georgia :)

Really? That's cool! I though in the US it was (everywhere) 4 years for undergrad + 4 years for medical school + 3-5 years for residency.

Yes. In the U.S. is 4+4+3-5 years of residency.

He is from the republic of Georgia. He is not from the U.S.

I thought he was from Georgia (US state)! :D
Heh, I remember hearing about Georgia being in a conflict with Russia, and people would come up to me and ask "How come only that part of the US is in a war?" because I had just moved from the state... XD

  yes, people often make that mistake. :D Both Georgia are good! :)

Ahahah, that's very good!

I went to a party last week and got like really wasted and some of the most serious doctors on the job were acting like party animals in the party.

Haha...I know what you mean. It works that way in the US, too. You work hard, but you also party hard...and generally keep the two separate. In the path to becoming a physician, there are a lot of imbalances.

how many hours do physicians work in your contries per week? US, Mexico, Portugal. it's 56 hours per week in Georgian Republic mostly.

:)

Haha, I can read it, and thanks, but it's only because Spanish and Portuguese are so similar.

PS: For the sake of on-topic-ness, I'm from the US, I used to live in DC but I moved to Alabama a couple of years ago.

How do you get the cool smiley in the thread title?
