KCOM class of 2005 meeting room

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
JohnDO,
I defend KCOM when I need to. However, I wasn't hired as the PR person (adding my sarcasm! haha)

BUT.......I love my husband as well, but that doesn't mean he doesn't make me mad beyond belief at times. Hopefully, those who read this post and don't attend KCOM are mature enough to research school BEFORE deciding to attend and realize that medical school, as with ALL aspects of life, does NOT come without some disappointments.

My point was that we all are really neading a break now and complaining is one of the only things we can do that can pacify some people for the time being. It doesn't solve anything at all. I am not siding one way or the other. I just think that posting what one wants is the purpose of this place. I enjoy knowing that others share the same frustrations as me. I enjoy reading how others interpret different things that go on.

KCOM is a great school and I have told people that time and again on SDN. However, everything has it's price. I refuse to let prospective students think of medical school in the romantacized fantasy that they sometimes do. Personally, I feel that is what is wrong with some people in our class...I've said it before..they didn't look into this endeavor well enough before they committed. That's beside the point. Also, I didn't hear anyone defending KCOM or worrying about public opinion when we were going thru hell with Histo.

I think most people on here, although frustrated, will say they are overall happy with their decision to come to KCOM. It's written all over this board and the 2006 board.

If you want to know the truth, I think we are all a bunch of *****s for even starting this entire journey! Think about it....you said it..hardly any time with family...grades at the expense of leisure/social/fun time....hours alone with Netter while spouse eats frozen pizzas..etc. We are all craving punishment, so why do we complain when we are punished? I don't know. Hell, this whole thing could be thought of by psychiatrists as self-destructive behavior! We may as well be cutters or anorexics! (uh...that was sarcasm again).

Okay, I don't know where I went with all that, I just started typing, and the longer I stay on here, the less I have to study!!

OOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This is TOTALLY a rumor! BUT, I heard that AFFOM is DONE after this year. That means, for those of us will fail/have failed one of the AFFOM courses, we won't have to repeat the ENTIRE AFFOM series (OTM, HISTO, ANATOMY). That is GREAT! I envy the 2006ers if that's true!

Can someone please come to my house and force me to study at gunpoint?

I had no idea that my post would spark such a controversy. I guess I have some explaining to do... First off, nebaker...I am pretty sure I did not do well on the test. It's my fault, I chose to study anatomy and saved micro until the last minute. I have no complaints about the test because I was the one who made it difficult for myself. My comment was totally sarcastic..even you picked that up form it. I would love come back with a witty reply...but I won't. I really don't see how your posts are any different from mine except yours are directly malicious. Anyway...
Ryan, I can apreciate your comment.
DOJohn...thanks. I can use all of the support I can get.
I understand that everybody has a right to complain about whatever they want.
In my opinion...the test was difficult...and I am a micro goddess (note the sarcasm). However, the micro dept has been the most fair dept we have had yet. They recognized last test that they were a bit rough on us and made up for it. I am sure the same will happen now. It seem silly to go around trashing the one dept that seems to be on our side. Anyway, imagine how easy micro will be as a 5th year, you've already seen it once.
Now...can't we all just get along? :D
Good luck with Anatomy!

nebaker-
you are cracking me up! Every time I see you at school you have a diet DEW in your hand and when I see you on here, you are brissled up about something! I keep thinking of the beavis and butthead 'Cornholeo' skit and you saying "ARE YOU THREATENING ME?!?!"

PS...This was NOT a sarcastic post, but a mere attempt at humor. Okay, I'll be honest, it was a mere attempt at yet another procrastination.

Hang in there. I don't think anyone on here intends to be mean. Also, (I worry about this with some things I write) words may read differently than people intended when they were typing them.

nebaker,
did you say something about a pop quiz? whoops....

well, it looks like several of us will be at the mercy of Dr. Sargentini. Lets hope he's kind.

hmm... I guess I better pass anatomy instead of posting on SDN so I don't have to do the whole year over, rather than just micro. what a yucky thought.

eh, what fun is studying anyway...

so, did anybody else think micro was a lot of memorization vs. understanding?
okay, so histo was worse... well, much worse... but for me it was the same sort of issue.

It seems to me all we do in class is point out what to memorize, rather than cover material in some meaningful way that facilitates understanding and long term retention.

just wondering....

Everyone relax...

You've only one more day b/4 your well deserved one week off.

See,

even old farts can be sarcastic.

I am soooo ready for vacation...unfortunately, we have oral quiz at 4pm!!! Knowing our luck, we'll probably get HeRoads!

Mesen,
I had heR last time. Just be sure, if you get him, that you deliver your answer with poise and grace. Kind of like 'you are giving a presentation to your collegues.' Those were his exact words from last quarter when he took off a point because my answer didn't 'flow' like it should have. Also, if he says..'well, I'm giving you a 5.' You need to ask WHY!!!! He will look threatened for a second. Then explain "I need to know what I did wrong so I can improve. If I missed something, I would like to know what the correct answer is." I said that last quarter and he added .5 to my grade!!!! (that's saying a lot from him).

It seems like years ago that we had a break!

I just wanted to wish everyone good luck tommorrow and happy studying tonight!

Howdy,

MS1 - Enjoy the break, see you in a week.

MS2 - Keep up the hard work, kick butt on boards, then enjoy the break, see you in two weeks.

>MS2 - Do you still dream of Netter?

Hey all,
I just caught up on the posts...
Damn, you guys need more sleep.
I laughed out loud quite a bit while reading about many of the same issues.
Take care of yourselves, and use this break for some fun!

TORAN!!!!

Hey, buddy!

I am so glad to see you still around. I was just asking about you the other day . . . trust that we all think of you often.

So, how are things? I hope you are content where you are. You are right, though, that we all needed much sleep. Third quarter aspirated!

JohnDO

I am NOT - repeat- NOT ready to begin summer classes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone had a safe and fun vacation!

I am peeling like crazy!

That was a great break, but it was WAY too long! I couldn't wait to get back to the grindstone!

(Is sarcasm still an effective tool, or are we starting fresh this quarter?)

Let's play a GAME! Okay, I'll impersonate someone and you guess who I am!

Here goes!

"uh, books on the floor, no one can talk during a quiz...only I get to talk during a quiz..and continually if I want to. I can mis-speak and give you information that leads to wrong answers. You need to be able to think thru my bull**** and sort things out for yourselves, you see. It is important that you learn these concepts I am teaching, as you will constantly be pimped on circuits, resistors, and capacitors by your attendings. Okay, it's been exactly 57 seconds since the quiz began, and I have talked throughout, now....let's hand those in! Okay, now, while I lecture, I will throw in a couple of 'funnies' to make everyone giggle so I don't seem like such an ass. That will smooth everything over. I know this material has a thousand other ways to be taught effectively, but I choose this way because it stimulates me more, as a PhD. Furthermore, my written notes are much more accurate than my spoken words, as I tend to screw things up from time to time."

Okay, I will take the first 50 guesses! The winners get...um.......to take my next quiz for me! You can do it blindfolded and are not allowed to have someone read the questions. Perhaps, you'll get more correct that way than I have so far!

Oh, is it that prof that also thinks lecture is 55 mins to 1 hour long and doesn't give us a chance to wake up before the next lecture?

Bravo...Bravo...great impersonation!!!!
I know I was critical before about a class and defended it but there is no defense for this class!!! It's pretty sad that he has to MAKE us come to class by giving a quiz everytime he lectures.

Wow...
People are still alive on here! I was getting worried that you all hadn't recovered from your breaks!

However, I am sure most are out enjoying this beautiful weather we are having! Can you imagine that in just 7 weeks, we will be 2nd years!!!!!!

Life really is wonderful isn't it????

Nice weather is finally here!!!
Class is now this annoying little distraction I must tend to between rounds of golf.

Wow! I can't believe that people are doubting the teaching style of the neuro master!
Maybe if the notes were written in English for non-philosophers, the quizzes wouldn't be so bad.

I just have to know if anyone else has been doing anything pertaining to school????!?!?!

Besides glancing over the neurophys to ensure my 50% in that class, I've done NOTHING!!!

Please tell me I'm not the only one!

well, it's sunday, and I have just started reading the notes for the first time. I don't mean sunday morning either, I started at 9 pm on sunday night. So, no one feel bad about not studying! I hope the NUT test is really passible by a student at kirksville high school because I would hate to be the first person in 15 years to fail that class!

Oh, well, at least I am improving my golf game and my alcohol tolerance. I can tell already that it's going to be a productive summer!

any advice for a first year student 7 weeks away from classes? where to study? drink? eat? play? in the 'ville. any help is greatly appreciated. i'll probably be moving to kirksville around august 10, too late? whats the best place to live? is it too late for me to get a descent place? sorry about all the ?'s but i'm curious as can be. thx again

OUSooner,

It is never too late to find a decent place to live here, since there are more rentals than people! I do not usually recommend renting site unseen, unless you have someone else check it out for you, though.

I know my landlord has a couple of places open and more opening in August when the current second-years move out. Her name is Helen Rogers and her number is (660) 665-5646. I cannot sing her praises enough, since she has been an absolutely wonderful person to rent from!

Also, check out the rental list in the admissions department, but be careful with some of those. You can also call some of the realtors in town and they may have a list for you to check out.

Another great resource is www.kirksvilledailyexpress.com under the classifieds heading. You can always get a great list of available rentals in there! Good luck!

Is anyone else really ENJOYING this quarter? I love being out by noon most days!!!!!!!!!!! My afternoon naps have reach an entirely new level.

However, I haven't done any neuro for a LONG LONG time! I don't see fireworks in my weekend plans!!

Everyone else must be having a good time, too, because things have sure slowed down on here lately!!

While this has been the best quarter so far, I must say I would only really enjoy my time right now if I didn't have school at all. While I usually have worked about 60 hours/week during summer that has still left time for all the stuff I like to do. I am just getting frustrated because I haven't gone caving for about 9 months or rock climbing for 11 months or camping for about 13 months. Even with the lighter schedule, there still isn't enough time to drive a few hours to the Ozarks.

LL, hope you enjoy your naps and the intrauterine growth isn't too draining. :)
David

Yeah,
I haven't decided whether the naps are due to the baby...or simple procrastination.....

I'm thinking it's the latter.

Howdy,

BURP!

Excuse me,

BUMP!

Come on guys, it seems as if our class has run out of things to say.....which I find incredibly difficult to believe!!!!!!!!!

Can I just tell you that my weekend sucked? I had to make the decision to put my cat to sleep on Saturday morning. It was awful. We think she got into some poison somewhere (snake bite? pesticide?) and it attacked her nervous system. She looked like she had Parkinson's. It was so pathetic. We couldn't watch her go thru it any longer and the vet said the damage had already been done. She is an outside cat, so even if we could have treated her, she still wouldn't have been the same and probably couldn't have defended herself well. Jim and I debated on what the 'right' thing was. There never really is a feeling of what is 'right' in that situation. I feel like I betrayed her by putting her down.

So, you will find today some pans of cupcakes in her honor in the back of the classroom. Her name was Aspen. (She was all white and looked like the fancy-feast cat, but a little dirtier!) Aspen had survived getting hit by a car twice, getting punctured in the stomach by a tree branch when she fell, and a hip replacement. She was 6 years old. She truly did have more than one life, but I would have liked to get the remainder of her nine lives out of her. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

double elle: Sorry to hear your lost. Hope you will get over the emotion soon. :)

I will be in the class of 2006 and am wondering if some people from class 2005 will give some advice on textbooks. Since you will be away for your preceptionship when we start our class, it will be helpful to know ahead which book(s) and euqipment do you think are necessary to have (during the bookstore open house or from other sources). If you have time, please post your response in the fourm of class 2006. Thanks a lot. :D

Howdy,

I've got a bump for you, JohnDO says he is so tired that he can't see, which makes me wonder what is going on with his retinae. Dr. C. says that if he can't see (Dark State) then the rods and cones are fully depolarized and the bipolar cells are hyperpolarized. I myself have a ringing in my ears from lack of sleep (tinnitis), and I know that I need to know this but I'm too tired to figure it out for now.

Double Elle we need your special powers of enlightenment and auditory prowess to break us free of our chains of ignorance! Please come to our aid quickly!

It sounds like you have both been taken by a rare form of beeninschooltoolongwithoutasummervacation syndrome (which mind you is not a malformation, deformation, disruption, or sequence). To be sure, you may want to get a colonoscopy. It is imperative that you recieve a megabolus of LeavingTheVilleOnAJetPlane-onin. Follow up with me in 9 days 12 hours from now on a beach somewhere.

Big Sky,
First of all, I need to know if your tinnitis is a low-tone ringing or a high-tone ringing. Either way, tinnitis is one of the first signs of sensory loss. However, if you can still hear high tones, that indicates to me that you have not sustained this injury due to exposure to a loud noise. If your tinnitis is of low-tone (my guess!), my professional opionion would be that the cause of your problems are due to repetative, monotone voices. Have you been exposed to repetative, monotone voices for at least 2 hours per day, 5 days per week? This condition is exacerbated by 2 things - sitting on one's behind while hearing the repatative, monotone voice & constant exposure to visual aids. If you have been in a situation such as I described, I would recommend you get that low-tone tinnitis checked out. I have read that if you let this condition go on, it could lead to erectile dysfunction.

As for JohnDO's problem (well, one of many!), I would suggest making sure his brainstem is intact. You can do this one of two ways. I suggest getting a glass of ice-water and pouring it in either ear while he is asleep. If his eye goes towards that ear, then his brainstem is intact and he should be able to finish out the quarter. If his eye goes towards the opposite ear, well, his brainstem is not intact and he should be taken off the supports that are keeping him alive.

The second way to see if JohnDO has an OK brainstem is to see if his eyes move with his head. To do this, manually move his head to the left and right (you should have learned this in OTM). If his eyes remained glued in place....that isn't good. If his eyes try to remain forward..that's a good sign. Do not try this after he has partied heavily, since drinking and partaking in recreational drugs can alter the results of these tests and make individuals appear to have a damaged brainstem, when in fact, they are just hung over.

As for KCOM2005's diagnosis's....I had to look those up in Stedmen's Dictionary. I couldn't believe all the symptoms listed! It sounds as if there is an epidemic of those diagnosis's going around school. The good news is that since we have all been exposed, we will be able to make antibodies and never suffer from these things again. I have heard that once we develop these antibodies, we will have no motivation problems for the rest of our careers. Essentially, we all turn into Stepford Medical Students.

In closing, I would like to reflect on some things I learned today. For example, did you know that when your optic ganglion cells fire, they make wonderful sound effects? (if those cells are firing rapidly enough, Big Sky, the sounds could run together and you could perceive them as being one long sound = your tinnitis could really be the sound of your over-stimulated optic ganglions).

Another thing I learned today is that you should never judge a woman based on whether she is being battered or not. You should use no gender-biased terms and no negative words (abuse, beating). You do not need to report stabbings to the police, but you do have to report gunshots. (I am wondering where assault/attempted murder fits into this..but OK.) Not having to report stabbings opens up a whole new world to us who constantly seek revenge on people who take our parking places, our seats in class, and who get better grades than us! (Too bad we have already packed up our knives for the move!!)

I also learned that not everyone says thank you, please, or excuse me as they pass by and about knock my head off when I am sitting in my corner seat. (oh, another knife opportunity!)

I guess that's all I learned today. It's a good thing I've already gone over all those old tests...I am seeing a NAP in my immediate future (ESP comes with pregnancy!).

You all enjoy yourselves and don't work too hard.

   Congrats to everyone on finishing the last day of classes!!:p :p :p

Hi all....
By now, you'be begun your neuro final. I wanted to apologize to all of you on here (in addition to my email) about taking it late. I feel really badly about it, because I know how frustrating it is to want to know how a test went...especially if you are on the line.

I've been up for several hours studying so I can at least make it worth the trouble. I hope you all did well.

If anyone needs any oral surgery done, the doc I went to was AWESOME!!! I took an extra couple of cards in case anyone needs his name/number. His office staff was so efficient and nice, and he was really really cool. I had old neuro tests with me to study while I waited and they even offered to let me use their conference room so I could be alone.

Anyway.....

PATH is what I'm REALLY worried about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howdy,

Everyone surviving preceptorship???;) ;)

ah yes... survival. :D

other than that nagging feeling akin to what it must be like to be a crazed slug lost in a saltmine, things are actually kind of fun. watch out for those drug reps though. they seem harmless enough, but before you know it you'll be sporting paxil undergarments and lipitor condoms. eek!

oh, and on that note it seems that between the boob tube and personal experience, 80% of my patients know more about meds than I do. freakin 5th quarter pharm....

anyone have funky diseases or extra cool patients that you'd like to share a little?

Nah... I'll I've got is diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and more hypertension... oh and can't forget depression... fun, fun:laugh:

Howdy,

Seckel Syndrome, Mononucleosis, Osgood-Schlatter, Bells Palsy, SC Septicemia, Sialadenitis

BSD, MS II

Yeah I agree that some pharm knowledge would really be helping at this point. Thank god for epocrates and 5 min CC!!
...saw a Dr. give a patient a pneumothorax this morning trying to get a central line in the subclav. ...way to stir things up a bit.
It seems many of us have a similar patient schedule
8 cholesterol patients, 10 diabetics, 8 hypertension, something cool, 8 cholesterol, 10 diab. 10 HBP, something cool, and the cycle continues.

Anybody get the chance to get some blood on their hands? I know this is supposed to be a primary care rotation, but I've had a blast sneaking out and scrubbing in on some surgeries. I don't think I've put a stitch in a quilt since the 4th grade, but now I've patched a gal's bladder flap to her uterus after delivering the placenta (C-section). :D

I got to see 2 c-sections and one delivery. 2500 paps, 200 well babies, 500 school physicals, and one man that was actually excited about his prostate exam. Of course, that isn't all, but it seemed like that was the bulk of the two weeks.

Anyone else's feet get bruised?????????????

Hey, random question, does anyone know why we HAVE to do our preceptorships in MO? It would be MUCH nicer if we could do them closer to our home. Since we only have 5 weeks off from school, it kind of sucks having to move off to some random location (I am still having trouble finding mine on a map) to spend 2 of those weeks. It just frustrates me.
