Invites?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do any of you know if any programs typically pay for part of travel or hotel cost? The reality is setting in that this is going to be a very expensive process-

I've never heard of any psych residency programs offering to pay for travel or hotel, but that's just based on a small N (=30 or so, between me and my friends).

Got busted by Stanford , too!

Anyways, Mercury -- I have not heard from UT San Antonio. I haven't heard yet from Baylor or UT-Houston either...and those are the two schools at the top of my list...have u heard from them?

Nope..havent heard from anyone in over 2 weeks now

as to the question of psych programs paying for travel/hotels..i have 2 interviews so far and both programs are paying for my hotel stay..i guess its pretty variable..

Offers from (in somewhat geographic order):

U. Washington
UCSF
Northwestern
Cambridge
Cornell
NYU
Hopkins
U. Maryland
Duke
UNC

Still waiting on the big boys:
MGH
Harvard Longwood
Columbia
UPenn
Pitt

And rejected by:
Stanford

To those with UCSF interviews, did you have 4 LoR before getting the invite. They seem like they are pretty hardcore about their "supplemental application," so i am thinking they may actually stick to the 4 letter thing.

Stanford also says they require 4 but, like c_daye, they sent me an invite with only 2/3 letters in.

Just don't want to start hunting for a 4th letter for one school that may very well reject me anyway.

I received an invite from UCSF with only 3/4 letters uploaded, still waiting on the fourth letter writer to finish. So it doesn't look like they wait for all four letters before inviting people. Goodluck:)

Brown University today.

Got Brown, too :)

When will Oregon look at our applications???

Any Thoughts. Mine still says "Not Downloaded".

Wash U pays for hotel. I believe U. Wisconsin Madison does as well.

UTSW via email and Baylor via snail mail.

It was a nice touch on Baylor's part to reference my personal statement though it seemed randomly inserted in their letter.

Adding Drexel, Jefferson, Stanford, and UC Davis.

Last week was rewarding :D

Only including those I scheduled:

Yale
Johns Hopkins
Tufts
Albert Einstein - Montefiore
Long Island Jewish
St Vincent's
Thomas Jefferson

Hi, I recently just had an interview and have a few others scheduled for early November. I scheduled them early because I was so excited, but now, I am having second thoughts. Early interviewers might not want to evaluate applicants highly because they still have many to see, and they might forget about you come ranking time. Any thoughts?

Add...

UT San Antonio

to the mix...

Bonus: They pay for your hotel at a Marriot right by the medical campus!

Hmmm...now if they could only throw in a ticket to Six Flags - Fiesta Texas...hehe...nothing like roller coasters to calm those nerves.

Columbia U today whooo.

I dont think it matters. Theoretically I think the consensus is that later interviewing is better because your appearance is closer to the match, but with the increasing number of highly/over-qualified applicants, interviewing late may be somewhat of a disadvantage due to the increasing number of applicants being ranked early on. The bottom line is that if they like you, they like you. Whether you interview on November 1st or in the middle of February I sincerely think does not make a difference.

From the land of oil to the land of cheese...

Add Medical College of Wisconsin for interview offers...

Now I am trying to play the geography game in ordering around interviews so that I don't go broke with travel costs and have to audition for Deal or No Deal anytime soon! haha ;)

Preparing for my interview at Jackson(University of Miami) this friday...i'll let u know how that goes soon...anyone have any advice on what to bring or appropriate questions to ask? Do they ask questions on psychiatry journal articles or ethical questions??

Alright...time for some monday night football tonight...let's see what T.O. can do against Giants!(not like it matters, but I'm a Bears fan):p

Does anybody know if there are any programs that wait for some or all LOR before offering invites?

Does anyone have ideas on how many interviews one should go on? I'm starting to feel overwhelmed (And I still have yet to hear from some places)! Here's my list to date:
Harvard Cambridge
Loyola
Northwestern
Wash U (already interviewed)
Duke
UNC
U Wisconsin
Med College Wiscon
Georgetown
UC Irvine
Johns Hopkins

yale
hopkins
chapel hill

really want georgetown and northwestern

CURVE2002, i'm gonna probably only go on 4 interviews. But I know which geographic areas I'd like to end up in. I think THAT is your rate limiting factor.

got brown today. psyched!

and about preparing for interviews, i think they mostly ask why you want to do psych, where do you see yourself in 5 yrs and why that program...basic stuff! psych is cool like that...

would love to hear what you think of miami...doing the florida rounds next wk.

You rock, gardilimo!!!!!
thanks, im so relieved! see ya there! apparently providence has been revamped over the yrs to this great town from mafia contributions...

Ok Im worried about not matching. I applied mid september and I only have 4 interviews. Do I run the risk of not matching? Should I be worried or am I overreacting?

Maricopa
Good samaritan
U of Utah
Univ of Maryland

i dont know if this statistic is true, but someone told me if you have at least 6 interviews, you have over a 90% chance of matching. so 4 is pretty good. i only have 5, and one im not planning on ranking, hence im in your boat. just because everyone on sdn is getting like, 10+ interviews, doesn't mean thats the norm. most of the people i know have 3 or 4 and are anxiously waiting for more. i wouldnt worry too much. you'll probably get a few more after Nov 1st anyway :)

I think a lot of programs are waiting for the Dean's Letters. I'm sure you'll get more....

(BTW, I've heard great things about all of those programs)

Good luck!!!!!

What do I do if a place I definitely want to interview...not my top program, but somewhere I want to keep as an option, is inflexible about interview dates? I'm willing to adjust things around but the dates they offered are basically impossible for me to attend. Should I just call and reason with them? Any advice from those of you who have dealt with this situation?

Stuck in almost the same boat. I only have three interviews at the moment and one of them just doesn't fit with my schedule, but beggars can't be choosers. Unless I get more invites real soon, I'm just going to have to suck it up and make time somehow.

Judging by your interview list you seem to be extremely qualified and would likely match in your top 1 or 2 choices. You seem to have a wide geographic range there. I'd start limiting the interviews in that respect. I've gotten 14 interviews but am only scheduling 6-7 (still waiting on MGH  ) as I know my personal geographic limitations are the northeast. That being said, if you dont have a geographic limitation, you may want to interview as much as you can and be very picky as to what programs you rank. If you're lucky to have so many interviews and have the free time to use visiting places, why waste them? I know I'm playing devil's avocate, but that's really the two ways of deciding in your situation as I see it. Regardless, congratulations on the invites and best of luck!!

Has anyone heard from Stony Brook? Did anyone else even apply to Stony Brook?? Does anyone even know anything about this program???

I applied there only because my girlfriend applied to their medical school but since she's decided against it I'm withdrawing my app. It's way out on Long Island and unfortunately I dont know anthing about the program. And I hadn't heard from them yet anyway.

UCSF today and no, i dont have 4 LoR's in and most likely never will...;)

Just got Cabrini yesterday and Stonybrook today. Don't know much about the Stonybrook program but I know they interview on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Anyone have any info on these two?

A great Wednesday! -

Cambridge
Jefferson
Mt. Sinai

Do any of you know if any programs typically pay for part of travel or hotel cost? The reality is setting in that this is going to be a very expensive process-

Mayo covers 2 nights of hotel, 1 more night if you do a tour.
WashU covers 1 night of hotel.
Cleveland Clinic covers 1 night of hotel.

I got Brown and UIC this week adding to a grand total of 9- waiting for 7 more schools...

Thanks for the hotel info, everyone! My schools arent paying, but a free dinner will be nice...

The list so far:

BCM (by snail mail)
Emory
U Chicago
U Maryland
UCSD
Brown
Yale

I've received invitations from:

Columbia
MGH/McLean
Pittsburgh
Cornell
Yale
Johns Hopkins
Brown
Mt. Sinai
St. Luke's-Roosevelt
Albert Einstein - LI Jewish
Albert Einstein - Montefiore
Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital
Wash U
U. of Iowa

I'm still waiting for a reply from:

NYU
Stanford
UPenn
Creedmoor
Harlem Hospital

No rejections, yet! :)

I'm curious to know if anyone has heard form any of these latter programs, especially NYU. I notice one member says he heard from NYU pretty early on, but I imagine more have applied here and will probably get interviews.

That is great that you applied yesterday and already have two interviews! When i first put in my app, i had one LoR from Medicine and recieved 5 interviews from what i consider solid programs. When I added a second LoR from Psych, literally within a few days I got interviews and some at supposively 'big name' places. I'm sure the 2nd LoR helped...I'm still waiting for two more LoR from professors.

Good Luck!

I got an invite from LIJ in the first week of october and put in for a January interview date and still havent heard back. I called and they said they're scheduling interviews on a monthly basis and I think what might be holding things up is that they really try to get specialists in the area of interest of the applicant to interview them, and I'm sure their schedules are very busy.

Interesting you heard from MGH as this is taken from the email that I, and many others, received from MGH/McLean upon receipt of our applications: "As you know, our deadline for receiving all materials is November 1st. We will review applications in November, and we will send invitations via email in rounds for several weeks."

Stanford has started sending out invites/rejections if you read back further in the thread...but I think they're still in the process...so don't worry yet!!!
