ERAS 2017-2018 Cardiology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Followed these Cards threads for years, my how time flies. Here we are.
US-AMG
Respectable University IM in Midwest (mid-t?)
Scores: >220's / >240's / pass / >230's
5 full length PubMed publications, (2 first auth), also 1 solid cases series though non-PMID
6 published abstracts-2 JACC, 2 Circulation, 1 JIC, etc.
1 online pub peer-reviewed in well known journal
1 book (entire book), published
17 posters, state, national, international (Europe)
5 oral presentations, incl' national & international (Europe)
Away rotation at excellent quaternery academic institution (hope to go there)
(got rocking letters but nowadays that seems par for the course)

No interviews yet bc, IDK, it's J.u.l.y.?

I decided to jump on here rooting for us normals/ mere-mortals! I'm not AOA, no elite step scores, I just tried to do solid/consistent Steps, and I found my inner Fire- tried to go bat-sh crazy with research, hoping that would move the needle a bit... But who knows?? No use "WAMC".

Channeling my inner gut-onc to say everybody (who is mortal among us) relax.
(those that will panic-attack themselves will do so anyway I suppose, so, commence spasming).

I read somewhere once, 'Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to their life?' Assuming that applies to interviews as well...
Will keep you posted. Best luck to everyone. Especially us mortals! :highfive:

It's very nice of you to share this. It does soothen the nerves of many, particularly IMGs.

You seem to have an excellent profile and I wish you the very best. God bless.

That publication list is INSANE. I don't think you can call yourself a mortal with a list like that. :)

Thanks for sharing. I am a US-IMG with similar stats. Around the same amount of research but I haven't published a book.

Still super early though?

I never really understood the "what are my chances" posts. Obviously, nobody can tell you. Like me, your an IMG so that makes it more difficult as does coming from a community program and having average/low scores. However, it looks like you are well published so you have that going for you, nice work! Ultimately, you're a foreign medical graduate so you should cast your net wide and apply everywhere that has ever taken an IMG in the past. That's what I'll be doing. I plan on applying to 75-100 programs at least.

75-100 programs? Holy mackerel! I don't by any means recommend what I did and only applying to one, but this seems excessive... and expensive.

With all do respect, you obviously don't know what its like to be an international graduate applying for a competitive specialty. I will make the money back working a couple days as a cardiologist. What's 3k in the grand scheme of things.

Ah, I didn't think about that. Being a FMG would make a big difference for sure. Best of luck.

I appreciate the kind regard. My best colleague/friend mentor was an FMG Cards fellow who, (once I proved myself) then shared every project with me he came across. (He learned that any paper I touched, I carried through to presentation and/or publication). As FMG he was literally one of the hardest working people I have ever known, extremely humble and gracious, and gave me such a leg up. From him, I made my personal motto to not take anything for granted as an AMG, stay hungry, and "hustle like an FMG". Best way I can thank him is by paying it forward in mentoring others!

That publication list is INSANE. I don't think you can call yourself a mortal with a list like that. :)

Prepared mortal.

Agreed. From what I can read from exhaustively burning my eyeballs with three years of tea leaves (Cards Fellowship thrds 14-15, 15-16, 16-17), distribution looked like 5% July, 5% September, 90% August.

Sure some programs are trying to cherry pick the harvad-y penn-y elite crowd. Woof.

Exactly what I was thinking!! But I did get a rejection today, which means the programs started to look at applications!!! That was a very quick rejection :(

I'm sorry - however, your user name made me smile, so you've got that going for you. ;-)
Maybe the program has a very strict screening method.
Do you guys have people making calls for you NOW, or do calls get made AFTER you interview? In other words, are the calls more about getting an interview, or making sure the program ranks you highly?

I would ask after the interview for my top choices to make sure I am ranked high...but where are my interviews? Huh?

Anything is fair and square to help you get into cardiology!! I'm glad I made a soul happy today lol ( not mine)

Adding the unfortunate rejection so it's not lost in the shuffle.
Removing external tag since everyone is external. Perhaps just note if internal. If it even matters at this point.

Hump day thoughts on an excruciating quiet day:

1. Did I write something stupid in my application that is a red flag I did not realize

2. Does one of my LORs say something terrible

3. Am my overall stats just not nearly as competitive as I thought [hoped]

Probably close to 90% of programs haven't even started looking at apps yet.. August just started yesterday.. The next few weeks should hopefully be more busy for everyone!

Silver lining - at least you know your ERAS notifications are working?
In all seriousness, I'm sorry. That's a crappy way to start the cycle and I hope it turns around for you soon. :sorry:

Rejected from Brown, which I added to my list right before submitting, and did not at all consider a "reach."
I feel like I'm going to throw up.
Oh and Columbia, too, five minutes later. Cool.

Brown asked me to withdraw my application for visa reasons. Don't know if I should call it a rejection.

Got a rejection from Columbia today as well, you are not alone. You win some and you lose some. Hopefully more invitations to come.
