Accepted Students (c/o '21) What Are Your Summer Plans?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am backpacking Europe for two months! Three weeks in Italy and then around Eastern Europe! I've never been more excited for anything (except getting into vet school!) in my life!

I'm working up until the end of June. Then in July I'm taking a trip to Europe with my dad and husband and a trip to the East coast with my mom. I will also be binge reading every chance I get. I'm gonna miss living here so I'm going to get outside and enjoy it as much as I can before I more.

I planned on just staying home with family and friends for the most part and enjoying the California Summer, but I got into The Merial Veterinary Summer Research Program at MSU which begins in May. I don't want to leave early, but it's going to be a great opportunity.

I'm probably going to drive up to Zion for a day in April though since I've still never been, and then have a mini-vacation up in Park City, UT! I figure now is the time to have at least a bit of fun before the madness begins.

Let me know if you ever want to meet up this summer!! I live about 10 minutes from the veterinary school. I work there on-call, and also have been working in a lab the last 1.5 years right behind the CVM. Any idea what laboratory you will be working in? Congrats on the summer program!!

My original plans included doing a whole lot of nothing, working on occasion, and enjoying my hobbies to the fullest while I still can. But then I got the opportunity to apply for the same research program as singhb09 and I was accepted to that so now my plans include less of the doing nothing, more research, and still trying to enjoy my hobbies in the mean time.

(And of course meeting @singhb09 so I can make up for not saying hey when I saw him at an interview in December)

Definitely! I'll probably be in MI a few days before the May 15th start date. They're supposed to send us the contact info for a few potential mentors soon. I put reproductive physio and parasitology as research interests, so we'll see!

And of course @finnickthedog , too :peeking:

Finn, do you live in the area now? If not, does this mean you will be moving to the area earlier?!

I decided to backpack through Europe on a whim for a month. Then I'm going to return home and work as a janitor at our local school district. Maybe volunteer at a parrot rescue. Dunno yet.

I made a pre-school bucket list! Little things like taking my old girl to the dog beach, visiting sanctuaries, going to wizarding world of harry potter, etc. :)

Parrot rescue sounds like fun!! Is it nearby?

I'm a non-trad so my summer plans aren't too different from my spring plans. I'm working full-time until close to the start of school, but also cutting back a bit on vet hours and using my free time for fun stuff like:

Cooking (made AMAZING falafel yesterday, am making key lime pie for pi day tomorrow, and planning on cheddar broccoli soup in homemade pretzel bread bowls soon). Taking advantage of my city's museums and other touristy things to do before moving. Konmari-ing all my stuff, packing, and moving (not really fun, but necessary. though I do love getting rid of stuff). Hopefully a vacation with the SO. A camping trip for my SO's mom's birthday. Visiting my family for a few days. Also have two weddings to go to soon. So lots of travel, I guess.

As for affording everything, my boyfriend and I both work full-time and save a lot, though I'm still trying to save as much as possible for tuition/living expenses. We also have a lot of airline miles/credit card points and I have some flight vouchers from interviews I cancelled. We travel cheap- low-COL countries, hostels, cheap food. We try to take a vacation every year, but it's been >1 year since any vacation and >2 years since we took an international trip so we're very excited :)

Currently going to move back home for the summer. If nowhere hires me and my old tech job can't give me hours I'll be riding my pony lots and working summer camp at my barn which is a decent gig. I applied to the local SPCA who is hiring for a couple jobs. Waiting to hear from them before I make up my mind. But definitely lots of trail rides and swimming with the pony. Might even try to go to a couple shows or do some team penning

So why'd you change your mind about grad school?

I'm confused. I am going to grad school. I chose it because it was a better option finacially especially with the pountry industry. I've decided that I'm still apart of the c/o 2021 in heart <3

I'm going to work at my hospital as much as I possibly can before getting married in July then moving cross country to Mizzou! It's definitely an event-filled summer :drowning:

It's okay to be confused, her post on that thread was half a joke because she will be going to UGA for grad school, just not veterinary school. :p

But it doesn't mean I won't be going to vet school eventually
My stats were nowhere near competitive enough for OOS at Georgia. If I can find the flash with my saved PDF of vmcas I'll post in the stats thread

I applied my senior year of undergrad so summer is just a continuation of what im already doing :p. Ive made good use of my time (after studying for the GRE, doing apps, and preparing for interviews). Ive binged a couple series on netflix (friends and the walking dead). Im currently working part-time for a biotech company on the research and development side of things which has been pretty neat. I also intern one day a week at the animal shelter doing surgical prep and another day at a mixed practice veterinary clinic. I dont really plan on cutting back because Im having fun and still learning!!:)

Im also going to start fostering in a couple of weeks, most likely dogs but Ill also help with kitten season palooza. Ive been so active (was in school, but even moreso now that Im done) and I feel its a shame I dont have a dog to include on my walks and runs. I move into a house in a week or two where I can finally have animals. I went to undergrad where Im going to vet school, so easy moving wise. Im also still working and living in that town too, I never left.

Ive also been reading a lot now that I have time and rehabbing my horse who has a soft tissue injury.

Besides having fun I suppose I should do practical things like learning how to cook and eat better:p and also weight lift since I only run. I love running and hate lifting! Also, would like to work with my horse more on groundwork if he gets sound enough before summers end.

Also going to costa rica sometime in July and have lots of weekend road trips planned!

I really hope I can go! I recently read HP for the first time (a little over a year ago) after some craptastic events in my life and it gave me my happy place back. :)

I plan on going to the beach with my boyfriend and his family, spending time with my parents (and their cute new puppy), being a bridesmaid in my old roommate's wedding, and hiking with my cat who knows how to walk on a leash... haven't actually taken him outside on the leash so we'll see how that goes
Oh, and working at my current clinic of course :)

Haha because in Orlando, almost every high school students first job is at a theme park. To my other classmates that wasn't really big news, except for when that section opened I got to meet some of the Harry Potter cast from the movies. Now that was awesome! But they are by far the biggest industries in the city so they are cool with hiring 18 year olds (at the time, I am now much older).

Some of them yeah! They did a universal cast member Q&A. So there were (I'm gonna use their movie names) the twins, George and Fred, Draco, Luna and I believe another character but those were the ones I was most excited to see. None of the trio were there. Although I did hear that the main trio came for the opening of the newest part of the Wizarding World, but I was no longer working there by that point.

I've also seen and helped escort Justin Bieber -.-, and One Direction when they came to the park in incognito mode. Haha.

That's pretty awesome JRod!! Even if this was a job right out of HS. I really hope this made it onto your veterinary school application. One of my best friend's SO works in the film industry as a 2nd AD. For their 4 year anniversary, he managed to get HP to take a photo of himself on a set holding a sign that said "Happy 4 years X and X".

My plans include paying off a credit card, working full-time as a chemist still to be able to afford paying my company back for my last post-bacc class/general living, maybe squeeze in a weekend trip with the hubs somewhere cool :D, volunteering at my clinic 1-2x a week instead of 3x a week, seeing my step kid play soccer (7/8 Year old team--hilariously cute) and play Skylanders with him, cuddling my pups daily, hiking, rock climbing, turning 24 , and enjoying my usual chaos before the real chaos begins! Also, I may be living in an RV during vet school (away from the hubs :() so I will have a lot to learn but am ready for an adventure. I am jealous of all the cool plans everyone has and will live vicariously by drinking wine and going to bed at 8 PM:oldman:.

I found these games shockingly addictive. Made me sad when my baby brother got bored of'em. Your plans sound fantastic!
Yes,! I am not a big game person, but I actually have a lot of fun playing the game with him. We bought him the Imaginators one, but my favorite was Skylanders Giants. :D

I will be working at a small animal hospital full time, but I am also planning a trip to Italy!!! I figured I would enjoy some traveling before spending endless amount of money for vet school.... hahah Also spending time with friends and family... Oh and hiking! Maybe a backpacking trip!

I will be going to Rome, Venice, Milan, and Cinque Terre. I am so beyond excited! I am going with my boyfriend who has been there before and he loved Rome. It sounds like you have been there before? Where have you gone and any recommendations?
