This is UN-freaking-BELIEVABLE. I'm here at home on a Sat., surfing SDN actually ( :p ), and the doorbell rings. My roommate and I weren't expecting anyone, so I ask who it is, and it's the mailman with an express mail package that needs to be signed. It's for me. Well, I sign it, and I see that the return address is from Wash. U. So I rip it open, but I already know what it is going to say. OMG, I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED TO WASH U!!!!! :wow:

Well, UVA sent me a rejection letter via snailmail today. Blah.

Sorry to hear that, blee. :( How is the baby doing?

Thanks, curly.
Ah, 'salright. I have no reason to complain, but it's still disappointing.

Baby's doing great. :) She's spending more time with her eyes open, which is pretty cool; of course, she's still mostly a sleep-depriving poop and feed machine.

 Aren't they all. I know that a lot of people are really gaga over babies, but I am not one of them. I'll hold it if the mother passes it to me and there's no way I can gracefully get out of it. But I'd just as soon look but not touch, smell, or listen. ;)

Well, Moose, in case there is any doubt, if in the future you are ever in a position where you're wondering whether I'd like to hold your baby, the answer is no, not really. :p That bundle of joy is all yours.

 I thought I was the only female who felt this way!

Hey DarkSide, I just had to say that I LOVE your avatar. I just interviewed there on Tuesday and, for the first time, fell in love with a school. I can't believe we have to wait until January or later to get a decision!

DarkSide, we are kindred spirits.

P.S. Did you see the limerick I wrote for you? It's weird how these things get in my head, but your name with "procrastinatrix" fits the rhythm of a limerick PERFECTLY.

Thanks! Aren't they grand? If they accept me and their financial aid package is even remotely close to what I get elsewhere, I'm... I'm... well, I'm probably going to go insane, actually. Moving more than halfway across the country... but to the coolest city on earth... highest cost of living of anywhere I'm looking... best fit curriculum of anywhere I'm looking... GAAAAAH!

But I'm counting chickens, and I promised myself I wouldn't do that. Yeah, right!!!

Heh heh, what if you get into UCSF AND Yale AND Mayo AND Chicago? Then what are you gonna do? Huh? Huh? Huh???

Should I wind up in that enviable position, I'll... I'll... I'll...

...oh, man, I have no idea. I think I'll probably co-opt unfrozencaveman's idea and kill a goat so I can stare at its entrails for inspiration.

That's not true, actually. I'm 99.5% sure that if I get into Mayo, I'll go to Mayo. It's the 0.5% that's keeping me from writing them a LOI.

I've adjusted. It's supposed to get up into the 30's by the end of this week! I'm gonna have to bust out the shorts!

I know everyone is probably sick of hearing from me ( ), but I just have to tell somebody that I got awarded a $100,000 scholarship from U Miami today. (It's not quite full tuition, but it's only a few thousand dollars per year off.) :wow: And I got an invite to interview at Harvard. :D

Are you kidding? It's great to see someone as smart as you (and apparently humble to boot) do so well. "Gunner" numbers without the "gunner" attitude works for me!!! Congrats!!

Now Q, lets keep it real for the peeps, Harvard would trump EVERYBODY else, right?

Wow. I would have a very hard time turning down a nearly full-ride scholarship, even if I were also accepted at other, "higher-ranked" schools (including Harvard). You're going to have some tough decisions to make....

And congrats!!!

I should only have this problem. But, the honest answer is that I would not go to Harvard if I had to pay anywhere close to full price to go there ($35k per year....gulp!). You're a researcher, 1path; I don't have to tell you how it is. You and I are not gonna be superspecialists making huge salaries and driving around in our Bentleys. :p Personally, I would rather pay $20k for all four years at Miami, study my butt off for the boards, and laugh like h*** all the way to the bank. ;)

Thanks to everyone for the congrats. It's nice to be able to discuss med school apps with other people who A) know what I'm talking about, and B) are actually interested in the subject.

Don't forget the high cost of living in Boston. I don't know what Miami is like for living costs but I can't imagine it being anywhere near as high as some of the big northeast cities.

So Q, I've gotta ask -- did you ask for a scholarship, or did they just offer it to you?

You have to apply for it. They have an online app. Basically they ask you to write two essays, one on your financial resources and how you plan to pay for med school, and one on how you would contribute to the diversity at the school. I'm a grad student, so the first one was easy. ;)

I agree. Miami's COL is high by FL standards, but not by Boston standards. ;)

Oh by the way, when you declare residency in Miami-Dade, you are issued a Bentley by the state. It's mandatory.

I'm actually a little surprised WashU hasn't dangled anything for you yet. I expected them to be the first.
It's too early; they haven't given any out yet. I'm applying for two different fellowships there, but I won't find out until March about one of them, and early May for the other. If I make it through the first round for either one, I will then have to go back to St. Louis in the spring for separate fellowship interviews. It's a lot of work, but OMG, if I got one, either of these fellowships is worth a cool $160,000 (full tuition to Wash U for four years). :wow: (One of my non-premed friends asked if I could just take the money and not go to med school. )

QofQuimica said:
ha ha, no, it's a Chevy Avalanche, not a Bentley. This *is* FL after all. ;)

This is a county specific requirement. Would you be caught dead in a domestic on South Beach? Gawd!

Hmm, good point. It would at least have to be a European SUV, preferably fitted with dark windows and rims, and definitely having a sound system that is capable of causing a minor earthquake anywhere within a one block radius of the vehicle. Probably a Mercedes would be acceptable, I think, albeit still not a Bentley. :p

Wow, that's quite amazing. Congratulations! That will definitely keep more options open for you post-residency.

QofQuimica, do you have a profile somewhere? I'd be curious to see your background that's gotten you these offers.
Sorry, I'm new.

Sorry, I'm new.

She doesn't have a profile, but here's a pic she sent me. I'm not supposed to share, but I can't help it. It's when she won the award for best med school applicant in the Galaxy, 2006 entering class.

Hi all,

Here's my quick update. UPitt finally sent me their secondary two weeks ago and I returned it last week, so I'm 14/14 with secondaries. I just set up my interview with Duke on Feb. 3rd. *Hoorah* Now I have three interviews (Howard, GWU, Emory) set up for next week.

Wish me luck and :luck: to everybody else,
sweetdoc

I haven't posted one, but I probably will in May after I'm done applying. I don't know what in particular you want to know about me, but feel free to ask away.

You know, Q, "Supergirl" would do nicely under your username. It would certainly convey that "definitely not a dude" sentiment. ;)
