Anyone have suggestions for Univ of Washington vs. Columbia?

Both are excellent programs. You really can't go wrong with either. When faced with choosing between 2 strong programs, I'd consider where I'd rather live. If you're an urbanite with strong ties to the Northeast, Columbia might be right for you, although the neighborhood that Columbia is located in is somewhat shady. If you like living in a smaller city on the West Coast, choose Washington. Personally, I'd rather live in Washington.

Also, you need to consider that there are many programs in NYC , including top programs like NY Eye & Ear, Cornell, NYU and to a lesser extent Albert Einstein & Mount Sinai. There might be some competition for patients. In total I think there are about 14 programs in NYC.

Columbia is a smaller program with 3 residents/ year. It does however have a very well-known chairman, who is one of the best known retina specialists in the country.

Both programs seem to send their graduates to well-known places for fellowships. I did a rotation at NY Eye & Ear and I met 2 glaucoma fellows who graduated from the U. of Washington.

Hope this helps.

I just got a call letting me know that I was off of Temple's wait list, so I scheduled an interview with them for the only time they offered, 12/10. Only problem is that this conflicts with my Summa interview, which was offered to me right away. Although I'd rather match at Temple, I'm not sure what my chances would be after just getting off of their wait list so late. Do you guys think it's worth cancelling an interview at a program that seems to like me, so as to try for a program that I wouldn't have a great chance of matching at?

Assuming you have other interview offers as well, I would interview at a better program that I would love going to. The fact that you got an interview still says a lot. Just my $0.02...

Einstein, St. Lukes, NYMC Brooklyn & Queens, St. Vincents, and Bronx-Lebanon...

Should I give up hope? Does anyone know when I should get a letter or phone call by?

Hey Sledge, I totally agree. I'd feel the same way, but there's probably very little difference between your app and someone who got an interview right away. And there was some guy last year (something like mlj) who got an interview at Oregon on Dec 1st and ended up there. What if he hadn't gone?

As long as you've got a few other safe schools, I say go for it.

hey sledge, yeah i ran into the same ordeal today...i got three interviews for dec 10..the last today coming with a phone call from Henry Ford (i dont konw if i came off the waitlist, i assume i did cuz they only had one date available). Anyways, anyone have any info on Henry Ford...its Henry Ford vs UT Memphis vs Eastern Virginia.
I was going to go to UT Memphis over Eastern Virginia, but now i have to do some research on Henry Ford. Id appreciate any info . thanks guys.
Oh and sledge , i agree with the guys above, id interview where ud be more happy matching. peace

I'm a bit surprised that you were rejected from USC, Stanford and NYU when Wills offered you an interview. This is becoming such an arbitrary process.

Yeah, unfortunately there is a lot of luck involved when the average applicant is applying to over 40 programs!

As a side note, I got an email today that said in it's subject line I had been offered an interview at St. Vincents Hospital in Manhattan. I was very happy, but then when I opened the email in turned out to be for the pgy1 transitional year . . . those bastards!

Hey Cyclops,
Thanks to you and those other superior applicants who are cancelling the interviews they're not going to. It will give the rest of us a chance to interview.

Guys, if you're not going to an interview, please cancel sooner rather than wait and cancel at the last minute.

Good luck to all.

Louisville vs. Oregon??? Who would want to go to the Louisville program, especially compared to Oregon? I interviewed at both and ranked Louisville last. I should have ranked Louisville second to last in retrospect.

USF vs. Cincinnati isn't quite as ridiculous as the above but Cincinnati wins hands down.

I haven't been on here in months (busy intern year and everything) but I just thought I'd say that you should never give up hope. I cancelled my interview at Indiana to go to Casey while I was at Denver and one of the guys with me in Colorado got a call that night inviting him to Indiana in my spot - it all works out.

Only because Morton and Jaded Soul really wanted me to ;), here's my list:

Will be going/have gone to: Loyola, UIC, UC Davis, CCF, Yale, Scheie, UCSF, UCI, CPMC, MEEI, Tufts, BU, Mayo, Columbia, UCSD, Jules Stein. Will be canceling UNC-Chapel H, Loma Linda this coming week.

Special send out to Morton, Jaded, and Goldfisch ... who I've met on the trail (and secret identities I know! heehee!) it's been fun guys and best of luck on the rest of the trail! See ya later, Eyelet :)

Thanks for the encouragement to give up the interview spots, people.... I have been nervous to narrow it down, but finally built up the courage to cancel a bundle of them. Hopefully the schools will choose other deserving candidates for the schools I finally had to let go: Wilmer, NYEEI, Mt. Sinai, NYMC, NYU, Alb Einstein, Columbia, New Jersey, Wake Forest, UNC-Chapel Hill, Geisinger, LSU, Tulane, BU, Howard U, Drexel, U Florida-Tampa, U Az, U Colorado, Temple. Also considering (give me time!): Wills, Utah.

I'm freaking out a little for narrowing down the field so much (the opposite of buyer's remorse?). I really really really really hope good things come of this (for someone, hopefully for me too). Ugh. Too nervous to write.....

Good luck everyone :luck:

Those are some good schools you're letting go! If you have the numbers to get interviews at all of those places, you won't have any trouble matching! Out of curiousity, why are you cancelling your interview at Wilmer?

BTW, I got an offer by phone from St. Vincent's today. I've been waiting to hear from them for weeks now.

Jaded Soul said:
Wow, I'm really curious to know where you are interviewing if those are the ones that you cancelled...

SERIOUSLY.....

Jaded Soul and Photon Catchers, would you mind posting your full list of schools applied to...you two may be the winners for 'applying widely'....

Another conflict: can u guys help me out?
NYU vs Albany.
Both are on the same day. VERY unlikely I can make it to both.
What do you think?
BTW
Congrats to Photon Catchers! The list of programs you're giving up sounds like a dream list of interviews to go to for someone else!

Anyone have any information on UTMB-Galveston or the Medical College of Georgia?

So when Utah called, I politely declined their invitation to interview.

Guess what I got in the mail a few weeks later: a letter of rejection from them

Utah gets the last laugh in this case :)

Utah: 1
Me: 0

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! It's very nice to have this forum to turn to in times of stress, confusion, and self-doubt... As for my app info, I applied to over 40 schools, have about 35 offers, a handful of rejections, and still haven't heard from a few. I haven't time to write the whole list now (or calculate the hard numbers), but as the dust settles, I'll be sure to pass on all the info, tips, stats, etc for the generations to come....

About Wilmer, it has a lot to do with what I have heard about the location (unsavory), the environment and atmosphere (maybe not the best for my personality). In other respects (particularly reputation and research), it sounds truly amazing. Also, I met an applicant on the trail whose dream was to go to Wilmer, but was waitlisted. It struck a personal note with me, and I thought, if I probably wouldn't rank Wilmer highly, why take someone else's dream away? I hope it works out!

Congrats to everyone else, also, for the hard work and the interview offers!

I can tell from some of the interviews you've cancelled that New York may not be the where you'd prefer to do your residency at. Nonetheless it's very impressive that you received interviews from the most competitive programs in NY. Good luck to you.

I agree with you. Wilmer is a great place (well, it's a great institution in a crappy location), but when I was there, it took me 5 seconds to realize it wasn't what I wanted in a residency program. Fortunately, there are lots of good programs with lots of different styles. Its important to know who you are and try to find a program that fits with your personality.

I saw you interviewed at UTSW. Would you recommend it? Do you know enough about Memphis to compare the programs?

I will highly recommend UTSW, it's a great program that will give you great experience.

I don't know anything firsthand about UT Memphis, but from what I've heard Dallas has the better program. Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. . . .

They notified me by email. Their excuse was that they had so many excellent applicants this year that they wanted to do an additional interview day. It must be a pretty decent program b/c I think the chair, Yanhoff is very well respected. Afterall, his book is great.

Yeah, tell me about it! I was about to shoot myself in the head during my last interview at St. Luke's. Fortunately, I just found out that I matched into one of the military's ophtho programs, so I got to cancel my last three and half interviews :D :D :p
