Who is in charge of assignments after graduation?? Which department or office or person? It seems like it would make sense to begin corresponding with them while in school, no?? They would get to know you a little bit and perhaps this would help determine where you get assigned. Any advice regarding these matters???

army hrc at ft knox. there is one officer assigned to handle the 63A general dentists.

absolutely, you should be corresponding with this person while in school. even though, the handler changes every 2-3 years, the first one you speak with should annotate your preferences in a spreadsheet. in this way, when the handler changes the next one can see that you've been interested in a particular assignment for x number of years.

hrc will always say the great assignments are never open, but you never know unless you try.

How would I get in contact with this person?? Or who could I contact that would help me find this person's contact e-mail/phone number??

No reason to contact them until Nov/Dec of your senior year. Assignments are given out Feb/Mar of your senior year unless you are doing a 1 yr AEGD - then they may contact you Jan/Feb.

So for 1 year AEGD, contact Jan/Feb of junior year???

The other guy seems to say to contact in advance. Do you not think this is a good idea??

I agree with krmower. If you're pre-dent as your tag indicates, contacting him now would be a waste of your time and his time. "Getting to know each other" isn't really going to help you. The good that comes out of contacting the assignments officer is having a heads up as to where you may be going.

Teeth63a and Kmower's advice is spot on. There are a whole lot of moving parts (and bodies) during the summer/fall of each year. The Human Resource Command is very busy trying to accommodate as many as possible, taking into consideration things like all of HPSP dentists coming in at the same time, members returning from deployment, those who are being deployed, those with special considerations like joint domicile or exceptional family members. It's understood that you will have wants, desires and reasons why you would like a certain assignment. You will be allowed to tell the Human Resource Command those reasons, wants and desires in advance of any decision.

There is no point in overloading an already overloaded system with calls and email months/years in advance. Especially when those making the decisions will not have all the facts as to where all the chips are coming from, going to and where they must eventually fall until Dec - Feb of your senior year.

Just as a side note from a very old NCO let me give you this one piece of advice Lieutenant. There are three people in the Army who you don't want to irritate: 1) the supply sergeant, he'll be able to get you and those serving under you comforts in places that nobody else will be able to get them for you or, on the flipside ensure that you don't get them 2) the mess sergeant - do you want to tick off someone making/serving your food?, 3) the Assignment Officer.

Nov/December of your senior year would be an appropriate time to begin initially reaching out. Each November all the Commanders sit down and discuss needs and openings for the upcoming year. Contact them before then will not be fruitful.

i disagree.

i have dealt with the last 4 assignment handlers for 63a since 2005.

the first one who is currently the specialist handler told me when i was a 2nd year dental student that she would "annotate" my preference in her excel sheet.

when the next handler took over, the excel sheet was passed on and when i called the next year, she said that she saw my preference annotated in her spreadsheet.

guess what? i got my 1st assignment choice!

coincidence? maybe, but i really believe my persistence paid off.

the current one is super nice!

i have been lucky. my next assignment was another very coveted spot.

never hurts to ask.

really the "other guy?" respect is key to be successful in the military.

how about "dr63a said......"

thanks!

dr63a, I am sorry about that. I am actually a 2nd year dental student right now and I need to change my designation from pre-dental to dental. perhaps we can reach a happy medium - i don't want to bother folks who might not have the information to help me anyway. is there an e-mail address where i can at least drop a line and begin a conversation. this way, i can at least get the ball rolling.
