I am a second year student at a school with no plastics department.
What is the best thing for me to do to get some exposure to the field?

Also, what is the best way to find programs that are more recon based?

thanks.

I hope you live in the vicinity of another university where there is a plastic program. If you do, make yourself known to some of the attendings there; the best way is to start doing some research with them. Shadow them in the OR as much as you can, since 2nd year is better than 3rd year (when you won't have much time).

If you don't live near another university, maybe you can take a year off to do research at another institution, where you can also see some recon cases (and get some LOR's from academic plastic attgs).

Most large-city universities are actually more recon-heavy than cosmetic. Often, the reconstructive cases can exceed 80% of all cases in these programs, so you shouldn't be hard-pressed in academic settings.

hope that helps
