What percentage of residents going into plastics do research?

Im interested in knowing how possible it is to obtain a plastics fellowship out of gen surg without the 2 years of research. Is it standard that all successful residents matching plastics fellowships take the 2 years or do they just do it to make themselves more appealing? Also, what are the major selection criteria?

i should've been more clear..

I meant to ask, what percentage of gen surg residents take the two year hiatus before applying plastics? I am not so interested in further delaying my life by 2 whole years to get a spot but will if that what it takes, i'm just wondering if it is sort of a mandatory thing or is do people match directly from gen surg?
