So my mom's store has been nominated as one of the best places to shop in the DC metro area...

Umm, is this a joke? Your mom owns a lingerie store?

If that's true, hook us girls up with some free stuff!

Which store is it? You neglected to tell us.

Yeah, I had a lot of traumatic experiences in middle school with this, so now I don't really mention it...it's kinda random anyway, like picture me first meeting you guys: Hello, My name is Ari, by the way, my mom owns a lingere store. wtf.

Anyway yeah, it's in chevy chase right before the DC border, on South Park Ave. It was right next to Tiffany's before they moved, you know where I am talking about LW?

So now we all know what kind of doc LW will be.

She'll be the one raking in the free pens and trips to Miami from the drug companies. LOL

And Ari will be throwing us all surprise parties with illegally obtained PHI.

OMG, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. My mom owns a jewelry store on Norfolk Ave. in Bethesda, so we know most of the other area jewelry places. That's too funny. I'll have to go in there sometime and say hi to your mom. :)

Welcome back to the US. I'm living at Centerpoint...in the tower, which wouldn't be bad except for the construction that takes place every morning in the apartment directly above. It's odd to me that they choose to hammer at 8 am. Surely there are other, less noisy, tasks they could be doing at this time?

LW and LS - how dare you hold a super monkey ball competition without me! I'm jealous! ;)

Ohh thanks SQ. Yeah I'm in the towers too & the construction is surely a pain xcept that it's taking place on the exterior of an apt. several floors higher.

Guys... any of u heard from ur Big Sib? Mine e-mailed me today. A/ I hope ur mom's shop wins!

WTF are you talking about free stuff from Ari's Mom?? Your Mom owns a JEWELRY STORE?? Where are my "complimentary" diamond studs, given to the first 5 female friends you make in medical school??

I know, right. LW I'll have my mom hook you up with some bras if you have your mom hook me up with some bling.

I guess I'm kind of unfamiliar with most of it. I'm covered under my current plan until the end of the year, can I get a waiver and then enroll in a new plan (or possibly the UMD plan) in January? Also, I guess I don't know what I should be looking for in general, I've never shopped for health insurance before. Should people in our financial situation be looking for lower deductibles or lower rates? HMO or PPO?

What kind of plan did you go with?

Should people in our financial situation be looking for lower deductibles or lower rates? HMO or PPO?

I would assume that you can keep your current plan and enroll later, but that is definitely one thing you should check with UMD.

UMD's plan isn't bad in terms of coverage, I just think it's overly expensive if you fit the average student profile, but especially married couples. Because statistically, married couples tend to go to the doctor more often, the premium for married couples is more than twice that for a single student. Which makes the insurance ridiculously high for Greg and I.

I went with a highish deductible PPO for a couple reasons.

First of all, we are young and relatively healthy and the occassional copay, office visit fees, or Rx fee is not that big a deal. Also, I will get many benefits through UMB, just for being a student. I would rather have a lower premium (because of the higher deductible) than have a lower deductible and a higher premium. Even a "low deductible" of like $2750 or whatever is probably more than we will spend in a year out of pocket. So its better to have the higher deductible (like $5500) for us.

Greg and I have an added benefit that because he is self-employed we can do some tax finagling and basically end up all our health expenditures being tax deductible (total actual $$ amount ends up as about half of what we spend we actually get back). So that doesn't factor in for you.

I like PPOs because I feel like I get a bigger choice in my health care. HMOs can be more restrictive. If you don't go to the doctor that often, then its probably better to choose a lower premium and a higher deductible that maybe charges you a little bit more in terms of a copay. The deductible is low enough at $5500 that if something catastrophic happens, you're covered (cancer, major accident, hospital stay, surgery, etc).

Don't forget that a lot of office visits can be done at UMB for cheap or free, that doesn't have anything to do with their health insurance. The UMB has NO lifetime maximum, which basically means you're covered no matter how much treatment costs. Also, it is BCBS, which is one of the top carriers. The plan I chose was through Aetna, which is a well respected company, and has a 5 mil lifetime max, which is still high enough to make me feel comfortable. By comparison, the AMSA plan has a lifetime max of like $250k, which means you'd be screwed if you needed an organ transplant or chemo or something.

For example, here's the basics of my plan:

https://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehealthinsurance/benefits/ifp/Aetna/MDAetna-HighDeductiblePPO1.pdf

Do you understand the difference between coinsurance and copay, out of pocket max and deductible?

I'm not saying to pic this plan, this is what works for us. What you want to think about is how often you go to the doctor and how much you are comfortable spending on healthcare. So if you don't go that much and you can get a lot taken care of through UMB for free or cheap (and you're ok using them) then you probably want a higher deductible, lower premium because you'll save money in the long run.

I rarely if ever visit a PCP. I do visit a specialist every couple of months. I know what a copay is, not what a coinsurance is (but I can kind of figure it out I suppose), but the out of pocket max stuff I am quite hazy with.

A 5k deductible just scares the crap out of me.

The rest is very good information, thanks.

In the case of my plan, a coinsurance is the amount of the doctor's bill, if the deductible is already satisfied, that I pay. So after the deductible is satisfied, it would be 20% of any remaining bills, up until the out of pocket max is satisfied, then insurance pays for all the rest. G'luck Coz! You'll find something that works for you. There's actually a pretty helpful search function on the site I used if you decide to use that as research.

I was gone for the weekend, so I apologize for the delayed reaction here, but this cracked me up. lol

And I second LW's request for lingerie hookups, and second LS's request for diamonds. ;)

OK, no joke, I'm sitting here drinking a cup of free soda. Sounds great, right? It is diet pepsi, strawberries and cream. Who the eff thought this was a good idea?? It tastes like someone took flat diet pepsi and mixed it with strawberry smirnoff. Hideous.

So I am in Maryland now. I drove up on Saturday to Ocean City and I am here spending time with the family and then off to Baltimore on Wed. morning. My grandparents have a place down here so I am sure during our 4 years together we can come down here and stay for a weekend of fun. My uncles and brothers went fishing yesterday and they tried to get me to fillet the tuna as practice for anatomy. SICK. So have you guys heard about the sex videos we have to watch in school? Apparently there is one that includes animals. I wish all the doctors in my family would have warned me about these gross things before I applied. anyway everyone has a great last few days!

SEX VIDEOS?? With ANIMALS???

ROCK ON!!!

I knew there was a reason for going to med school.

I wonder if we'll know anyone in them?

OC is fun, Kat. I haven't been down there in a few years, but I used to have a blast when I was in high school. The rooms on the strip were cheap and they didn't card 16-year olds. I'm pretty sure it's changed since then, but still...great memories.

Having a parent in the jewelry biz definitely has its perks - I'm the only girl I know who owns a diamond ring without having made a committment. :) (Too bad I'm not bringing ANY of my nice stuff to Baltimore.) LS, you'll get your complimentary diamond studs after I get some! I still don't have real ones. You should see my sister's - she's got a half-carat in each ear. They look like headlights. It's disgusting. As for free bling, I can't make that happen. But if there's something in particular that you want, I can get you a great deal.

I think Ari should get a pair of 5-carat studs so he can look like a rap star or an NFL player. And does your mom have other "fun" stuff in her store, like costumes or leather? I need a new riding crop.

strictly a nice lingere type store, i can't believe that women would spend that much on underwear...no sex shop style chains/leather/etc... sorry to disappoint ;)

Ari, did you see this?

U of M 2006-2007 Schedule

VANDY??? WTF is that crap?

Our first "real" game isn't until Sept. 16th, when we kick the ever-loving crap out of Notre Dame (which happens to be my dad's alma mater). I know a guy who went to grad school at U of M, and we want to start a Michigan alumni club of Baltimore. What say you to finding a local spot to watch the games, perhaps get some other Wolverines in on it? There's gotta be more than just the 3 of us. Actually, our anatomy prof is a Michigan grad, too. So that's 4! I'm sure we can find some more.

We should go up to Ann Arbor for the UM/MSU massacre. However, I think we have an exam that monday. What do you think?

YES we have to go to the state game. Which exam? Depending on what it is this might be doable. I think the alumni club is a great idea...I feel like most grads would be in the DC metro area, but we can give it a whirl and see what we find...

You're correct, there is a huge network of U of M alumni in DC. I was actually a member of the CAN's (Capital Alumni Network) U of M branch. I played on their softball team last season, and we'd go to watch games at Tommy Joe's in Bethesda. (There was another group that went to the Pour House downtown). The other alum that I know here was also in the Michigan CAN branch when he lived in DC.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent (that I can find) here in Baltimore. I've emailed the U of M alumni club, asking how we can go about setting up a branch here in Baltimore. I really just want to get a group together to tailgate with and watch games with. When I lived in Seattle, the alumni club there was unbelievable - we basically took over a popular sports bar every Saturday for the whole day. People would show up for the noon (in Ann Arbor)-start games at 9am religiously (3-hour time difference on the west coast). For the games that started later, and during Bowl games, the people who came for Pac-10 football (mostly UW Huskies fans) would always be overruled by all of the Wolverines, and the TVs would stay on Big 10 games. I loved the camraderie of that group - the DC group was a lot of fun, too, but it was almost too big.

Michigan football is meant to be watched with other Wolverines. I think we should just pick a UofM-friendly sports bar, make a deal with them (like half-price drinks/appetizers for Michigan fans), spread the word, wear our Maize 'n Blue, and see who shows. Worst-case scenario? The 3 of us will be loud enough to get slapped with a noise violation.

1st game is Sept. 2nd!!!

And incidentally, (LW you know what I am referring to from another thread), people who don't know wtf they are talking about who tell other people they don't know what they are talking about get on my nerves.

Oh, Lord. I know what you mean. But sadly, you can't convince (or even educate) these folks. They'll cite every quack blog they can find, claiming it as "evidence." They bear an uncanny resemblance to those *****s who hid in their bunkers with a three year supply of toilet paper and Evian during Y2K screaming "Armageddon", or those right-wing extremists who try to convince everyone who'll listen that anything that isn't white and protestant is the work of the devil and that women should know their role as walking uteruses (uteri?) and man-servants. They're better off being ignored.

I guess some people like to pose as economists or real-estate experts or psychics or whatever...but the truth is, they're all obnoxious pre-meds/meds like us.

74 million homeowners can't be wrong. Some of them can, but I'm not one of them. :)

I just read through that thread...it made me laugh with all the negative speculation about the housing bubble. People have been predicting the bubble would come crashing down for the past several years, and nothing has happened. I agree with LW, this attitude is really similar to those Armageddon/"the end is near" types, who are consistently proven wrong in their predictions. People are so quick to judge what would be best for someone they know nothing about...they didn't even know what area of the country the OP was looking to buy!

2 more days, folks!!

You guys have gotta see my new furniture!

You'll have to excuse the washer/dryer that is sitting in my living room, but my kitchen table and sofa are AWESOME.

I hate Oklahoma.

BTW, pure fear has officially set in! Also, I haven't heard from Allheart since my order was put in, have you heard from them on yours LW?

Cozmosis said:

I actually emailed them this morning about the tracking number that I never got. Our order was "processed" and then sent to their warehouse for shipping on 8/1/06. I got a confirmation email for that, and it said in one of the last paragraphs that I would get a tracking number as soon as it shipped. Well, that was a week ago. I was pretty pissed that I hadn't heard a peep in a week, so I sent an email. If I don't get a response by tomorrow at noon, I will see if I can reach them by phone. I think it's total crap that they haven't shipped it by now. I know there were 20 sets of scrubs, but come on, they've had a week to get it together. They certainly didn't have trouble running my credit card number - the charge posted the day after I ordered.

Allheart.com gets a  rating from me until I get some feedback.

I need help putting my glass tabletop on my table. I had to take it off so I could find those rubber things at the home store and stick them on (the little rubber "dots" that keep the glass tabletop from sliding around). I'd ask my roommate, but I haven't seen her in a few days. Who wants to help me move an 80-pound plate of glass?

And what ever happened to our "weeding party"?? I need a new bottle of weed killer...I found this stuff that works like a charm. We could also take turns pushing the lawnmower around. I guess I should probably buy some grass seed, too. Although the guy at Lowe's said not to plant until April....I don't think my "lawn" can wait that long.

Does anyone know who to call to get a tree trimmed? The tree in my back yard is becoming a bit of a hazard - branches in the power lines and such. It's actually quite huge. This is going to SUCK in the fall when the leaves come down. :(

I did a little internet detectivery and apparently a lot of people have had this problem, while a lot of people get great service from them. I found their phone number, which is nowhere on the site.

Phone: 805-384-4425

The girl said that they had sent it to the warehouse for shipping, but I'm not holding my breath.

So I am coming to town tomorrow and moving in. Does anyone know the orientation schedule or is there a website? I am not sure where I am supposed to be and when. Is anyone getting a TB test tomorrow? I have one more to go!

The schedule was in a packet that (I'm assuming) you didn't get ;) It starts on Thursday, 11am-5pm at Davidge Hall. They said they'd give out a detailed schedule then. Every day has a different start and end time - I think Friday is 8-3. There are bar dealies almost every day too. I guess they'll explain all of it Thursday.

I'll be getting my second TB either tomorrow, Thursday, or Friday.

I took in my PPD records for the last 2 years. Harlene (the nurse) said she would call me if they accepted those. I did go and get a blood taken yesterday so they can do the Hep B titer. Hopefully I'm not nuts and I remember getting the Hep B series because I actually did get it.

Thanks for the info. I am wondering what other stuff I haven't received yet. Too late now I guess but whatever. Hope everyone is a great last day!

Cozmosis said:

I have to say I'm a bit nervous myself. But I went and looked at the pre-allo forum, and I felt better. No matter what stress I feel in the coming months, it is academic stress, which I can handle. For me, application stress was 100 times worse because it involved not knowing where you would be living in a few months, if you would get it, etc. I just thank God I'm past the application part. I know there'll be another round (residencies and whatnot) but for now, whew!!

However, the plight of the Myers-Briggs Introvert is what worries me. Tomorrow is going to be exhausting!

Not to worry Kat. We received a big packet of paper, but 95% of it wasn't anything you really needed, just mostly flyers from interest groups. However, did they tell you you are suppose to wear a shirt with your undergrad's name on it tomorrow? That was in the packet. They also sent us a list of our Big Sibs, but I didn't get that flyer in my packet, so I'm assuming I'll figure it out tomorrow.
