Other things I know:
-Hawaii have been planning the school for 10 years but have
been running into problems financially. They have finally
ironed this out with Federal and State fundings and actually have
an excess of what was asked.
-Site visit just this past weekend. Lisa said that they seem to
have made a positive impression, but decisions are not rendered
overnight.
-Deposits will be returned if ACPE doesn't aprove

Things I don't know: A lot

My conclusion: The poor school have been facing many challenges- from the state, the ACPE, then now the stigma of HICP. They have been trying very hard and have been extra cautious to make things work out. However well things might be progressing, I don't think they planned on all the negative publicity for something that they never did. Yes, there are still openings left- probably bc they are selective. It's not that hard to fill up 80 seats quickly. I hope the above info will help clarify things for those still deciding on what to do.

To make a long story short, I applied to UIC in Illinois, got an interview, but got rejected post-interview (no waitlist or anything ya I feel like a loser). The dean of UIC I guess is buddies (used to work together) with Dr. Petzzo (sp?) the dean of UH. The dean of UH-Hilo used to be the dean of the Perdue Pharmacy program. I guess since I was qualified at UIC, but didn't get a spot, the dean of UIC emailed the dean of UH my information (Pharmcas etc etc) and I guess the UH was impressed, so the interviewed me over the phone. I guess UH is short on applicants, but they didn't say how many seats were avaliable. It was totally a last minute thing because they recieved my application (pharmcas and supplemental) on the 25th because I faxed it to them and invited me for a telephone interveiw for today, the 31st. So I guess that's why it was a telephone interview because my application and interview were very last minute. They told me that they would make a decision on or by June 15th if I got a seat in the class. This is all from the lady Lisa Seese whom I have communicated with several times over email.

So, to those who have had interviews, did they ask you some tough questions? Mine did. I was prepared for questions like, "So why do you want to be a pharmacist? etc etc" because these types of questions are what were asked at my 3 other interviews. But UH-H asked questions like "What are important safety issues with your patients at your retail pharmacy?" and "How do you see pharmacy changing in the next 20 or so years?" and other hard questions that I wasn't really prepared to answer. BUT I was able to come up with good answers on the spot I believe. :scared:

Anyone else care to post some questions that they were asked?

You should have looked at the interview feedbacks for Hilo on SDN... cuz they ask the same questions to everyone during the interview

They were basing it on the individual and, yes, they were planned. They did state that their final deadline for all applications was June 1st. Good luck to those waiting for acceptance!!!

Has anyone heard back from them?

Haven't heard back yet, but I was told by Lisa Seese that I would hear a yes or no on or before JUNE 15th!!! That's coming around the corner!

I can confirm that...it was stated that everybody that has been granted an interview will be notified by June 15th with the final decision.

My interview was on May 14th and they told us that they would let us know in 2 weeks... haven't heard anything back from them yet...

Dear everyone:

I got accepted to UH-Hilo TODAY!!!! Lisa called me today. Class of 2011, here I come!

I'm so happy to be apart of the new class that starts this Fall. Good luck to those that apply for the Fall 2008 class!!!

I'm excited to be part of the inaugural class starting in Fall 2007 also! I found the school page on pharmcas which shows how many people were interviewed and accepted for our class.

Can't wait to meet everybody! See everyone soon!

I was accepted as well and now I'm facing the challenge of moving. Does anyone have a company in mind that they are using to ship personal belongings? I have contacted Box Brothers in Inglewood but open to suggestions. When is anyone else making the move? Just want to talk with another mainlander about the process.

I'm putting everything in storage and leaving with 2 suitcases and that is it...I'm going to live at home in the Summer so I must do this.

I know this link has been given to us before, but have you guys read the bottom page under "Program description", second paragraph, third line down? It says

"Regional accreditation has been received from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and Precandidate Status has been awarded by the Accreditation Council of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE). Our next steps will include attainment of Candidate Status, followed by Full Accreditation."

Is it true? UHH CoP is now at its pre-can status? Has anyone confirmed this or received any notification of this great news?!?! Wow...I hope it's true!

Yea, i'm not sure they know yet because we are suppose to be notified and they said when they find out then our fin. aid award letters can be processed.

I've lived in Hawaii all my life, and honestly, it's not going to be the greatest if you're an outdoor person (mostly in Hilo). Often, people head there to go around the island, which takes about 4 to 5 hours without stopping. There are great beaches. And on the weekends, you can head to other islands. The airline companies are having many cheap offers these days. Two weeks ago, there was a $1 one-way flight to neighboring islands!! But other than these activites, Hilo doesn't have much of anything. So if you really want to concentrate on your studies, Hilo is the best place.

Does anyone happen to know what's the average pcat score UH-Hilo requires?

You should contact the pharm. dept. They are good about responding to emails!
:)

is there surfing and scuba diving near Hilo?

I have just received information regarding financial aid today. They have already offered me loans for the program, so watch out for the award letter from the financial aid office.

this is found on their site: Students with more than one repeat of a course will not be considered for admission to the College of Pharmacy.

has anyone gotten accepted in spite of this? I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who has retaken a course at least once.

I assume what they means is the situation that you earned the grade less than "C" or "F", probably not because you retake the courses for better grades. What about "W".. just wonders I recieved considerable about of W?

Yea, I would think things are going to be a lot different for the students applying for the Fall 2008, which the window is now up on Pharmcas. They now require their students to have PCAT scores and 2 letters of recommendations. I'm really not sure their will be more special circumstances since we are the first class and that was for us. :) I would personally contact the pharmacy school. They are good about emailing back.

Hey guys, I got in for UH Hilo Class of 2011 and I was required to take the PCAT and submit 2 letters of recommendation.

Any of you guys recieved info about financial aid yet?

Not yet...I called 2 days ago and was told that they are still processing each one. Some have already been sent out, though!

Anybody that interviewed in June, did you get accepted, put on alternate list or denied admission?

University of Hawaii Hilo is going to be a nice school. The assistant dean used to be the dean of assessment at my school. He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. It was a pleasure and honor to be one of his students. Too bad he had to leave. All the students who knew him called it a sad day in our school's history when he left. You guys are in good hands with him. GOOD LUCK and enjoy pharmacy school.:D:D

Hi,

What school do you go to? I'm trying to figure out which teacher this is. All of our teachers at the University of Hawaii-Hilo are great.

Yeah Dr. O was by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He truly cares about his students. You guys should feel lucky.

Western University. His name is Dr. Okamoto.

Tell me, what do you think of the school so far. If possible, explain a typical school day of yours, your weekends and you views of the school.

hey guys, anyone applying here this year?? What are ur stats and/or if you heard back yet? Interviews??? anything?? Thanks! :)

cGPA = 3.08
sCGPA = 3.47
PCAT = 76

i called today and they said they're beginning to review applications...they're having a meeting next week (not sure if this is their very first one for this application cycle though)
