Most initial pre-meds don't bother applying to med school. Of those who do, at least for those getting into allopathic schools (unless stats have changed muchin the last 5 years), you're looking into someone who has a 3.5-3.6 college GPA, MCAT ~27, has volunteer or shadow experience, did some sort of science research (publications are nice but not necessary), has 1-2 ECs they're really into/involved with, is extremely extremely extremely interested in becoming a physician, and went to a good 4-year college. That's your plain vanilla applicant. Since 50% of applicants get in, you want something unique or ou want to power that up for a higher shot of getting in. That doesn't speak to DO schools where perhaps the MCAT score doesn't need to be as high for a competitive chance.
