The Investment Thread (stocks, bonds, real estate, retirement, just not gold)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I put $5000 yesterday into iota at $2.5 per coin. I plan on putting another $5000.

This week im going to put $10000 into ripple. Within the next 2 months, ill split $10000 among litecoin, monero, or qash. So total ill have $30000 in crypto.

I believe ripple and iota have a bright future so am buying and holding those two.
Where did u buy iota from?? Which platform??

FOMO crowd on this thread is real. I bet you I ask 90% here they don't know nothing how bitcoin works.

When random people start talking about crypto, we are in deep sh1t. I have seen it more and more clueless people suddenly jump into this due to FOMO. Hope they are all billionaires soon :)

Hell, I know how bitcoin works and I still don't mess with it. Feels like a speculative bubble. Granted it's one I could have become a millionaire from had I taken a chance a few years back. There's no guarantee that any other crypto will have the type of meteoric rise that Bitcoin did. It reminds me too much of the penny stock slot machine to put any sort of real money into it.

I'm interested in hearing about the fads and bubbles we've had in the recent past, besides the obvious ones like housing, gold, etc. I can think of a couple like:

- 3D printing. Stratsys SSYS hit $130 in 2013, now $20. 3D Systems DDD hit $96, now $9.

- 3x levered ETFs like UWTI/DWTI on oil, UGAZ/DGAZ on natural gas. They split and reverse split all the time to keep the price within a certain range, but if you look up a chart they should've adjusted for that, and they got decimated after 2014.

What other examples?
What's going to be the next bubble? I'm thinking Bitcoin and lithium.

When you hear you average friends are buying bitcoins = it is already too late

People keep calling Bitcoin a bubble yet it almost doubled again in the last month.

Now I'm not going to have a high percentage of my wealth into it but this thing could easily hit 100k.

No one here is putting a ridiculous account into it, I know i wouldn't be upset over losing 30k since my net worth changes by that amount regularly.

Haters gunna hate on btc, just like they did when it hit 1k, 3k, 5k, 7k, 10k... now it’s at 14k and jumped 20% ($2500) today. Idk if I’d say it was too late to get in. Could be 20k by end of 2017. No risk no reward, right?

It is a bubble by definition. It produces nothing and its value increases due to only speculation. If you can ride the bubble and time it right, more power to you. I'm not taking that risk, though. Good for everyone that made money.

It's not about timing. Could you get in now and lose everything? Sure but who says you have to stay in? Toss 10k in and if your wrong you lose 10k. What is that a months salary? However if you are right, that 10k could become 100k real quick.

No one said put your entire wealth in it.

If you don't get in now wait for the next drop. You'll thank me.

Or just buy this:

I know right? Some people are acting like we're putting in our entire life savings in. If this falls they will say they were right. Little do they know we add and subtract. I'm playing solely with house money right now so I can't lose.

For sure. I own .25 coins now, how about you?

I want there to be a 25% drop so I can dunk more in hahaha

I currently have over $40k but I've been meaning to lower. What's funny is I say buy on the next pullback but I'm actually been wanting to sell. I want a pull back to freak me out and sell some but I'm probably going to double again before that.

Wow, nice. I'm in baby amounts compared to you

I got in a many months ago, I've doubled quite a few times and sold a bunch. I don't want this much in but it's unreal right now. This whole futures thing has me worried though. I'd like it to go back to 10k so it freaks me out and I drop a ton.

I put my trading account in index funds just because a small amount in Bitcoin is destroying my trading account.

Citron is shorting, might see a good pullback. Already started.

Anyone buy Iota coin? Partnered with Microsoft earlier this week. Amazing technology (the tangle).

Maybe we need to start a Crypto thread :D

bought it at 2.5 - sold it at 5 - made $300 in 3 days - not bad for an initial 300 investment

Will one of you guys convince me to buy crypto in way that won't sound like I'm buying penny stocks?

At this point, it's pure speculation, NOT an investment. It's fine if you don't care about losing your money. The easy 100x money has been made. It can go up more 100% or down 90%. No one knows. Speculate away.

Problem is you can invest in crypto and make more next year then you'd make in indexes for 5 years. Heck we might double again before the new year.

I'll be cheering you on the side with your speculation.

Just start small. One double and your playing with house money only.
exactly - I have like two days pay in the market - I see it as replacing gambling since I don't have casinos near by - there are storeis of people making 5000% percent, and that is why I have $100 each in 4 small penny type coins - if I make it - great - by I expect to loose it - they I just sort of day trade the others and make a little change, _ I have cashed out most of myu initial investment, so playing with hosue money

Me and Momus ain't contributing to this trifling nonsense.

Just put in 1% of your net worth. If it falls then it's like the market dropped 1% that day, no big deal.

I'm at the point where I don't care if it falls since I'm only playing with money made this year alone. There's zero risk for me.

just sold lite coint - in at 115 - out at 372 - turned 200 into ~700 - although at some point people gonna lose big

I ain't doing a FOMO trade. I have enough. If it quadruples, all I get is 4%, hardly worth it.

You want risk, you should start mining them yourself. It's winter so perfect time to not run heater and get your heat from the rigs. Or, you can rent them online.

Just make sure you aren't the last one holding the bag when the party is over.

Don't forget IRS wants your gain :) Keep track on your basis.

I understand you are cheap, but taking an expensive vacation with my family is pretty nice and it cost me nothing.

There's no bag to hold when you are using profits only.

I finished my initial purchase of cryptos. I bought xrp, iot, qash, and req. I'm up almost 50% in the past week but it doesnt matter as I'm holding 1-3 years. We'll see how it goes.

I understand you are a speculator :)

You do what you want with your money. Maybe you get 100x, maybe you lost 90% on that profit. Whatever right?

Bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrencies are such a scam but I'm making a lot of money in it. I decided to not contribute to my roth IRA this year and put it in litecoin. I'm up to $191,000 right now and I really want to cash out.

If either Momus or Pezdispenser tell you not to do something financially, I would follow their advice.

I'm sorry but any person can tell you to buy vanguard index funds.

Making money though, that advice is horrible.

I've actually taken out twice now. My original amount and the amount for our vacation. There's literally not a single reason for me not to be in it. I'm in a win only situation.

Having a hard time deciding whether to sell or hold. I don’t see these coins going down anytime soon. Bought a lot of ripple today, holding cardano/iota/eth/ltc/btc.

Someone convince me to sell and take profits.

I'm sure everyone makes money this yr. 25% up since trump got elected, no chump change either.

Anyone in crypto since early 2013 makes more but who cares. This ain't a race.
Everyone on the street is telling you to buy crypto now. That's not difficult to be a sheep and do the same. Keep gambling /speculating. Everyone is in for a FOMO trade. You can make 5x more if you are lucky or lose it all and I still don't care. If you keep bragging here, sheple newbies might follow and buy more :) and you will make more profit!!! Keep me updated, but I ain't touching this speculation. I have enough to be happy, no need to touch this crap. I'm happy for your gambling profit.

Don't you want some spending money? I know you prefer saving everything.

Live a little.

I don't need to gamble to get more money. I don't go to a casino thinking "I am doubling my money today so I can have some spending money."

Blockchain technology is here to stay but to say which one will prevail is another matter. Over 1300 crypto currencies, I choose not to participate on gambling which one will shoot to the moon, and gain mass adoption, or crash to 0.

How am I gambling? I have zero original money in.

Don't be delusional and confused the value of profit money. I guess you have that profit money holding crypto using monopoly money then? It's not real money, you can't buy sh1t with it, no? Therefore it is NOT gambling according to you.

Everyone having a profit on anything (stocks/business/RE) as long as they use that profit money only and put it all in black in roulette isn't gambling according to you. Listen to yourself.

And you gambled before you won big. At this point you can continue to take risk as its none of your original money and hopefully it goes up to 100k or more. I have a friend that talked about this back in 2012 but didn't buy any bitcoin until it was at 2k. I wish I had listened to him, especially back then. It's all too much of a hassle for me, especially having to store it in a wallet and offline (if you are smart and don't want your bitcoin to have a chance of being stolen). I am to risk adverse to get in at this point. However, IOTA peaked my interest when big players are going to start using it. The little research I did showed I had to buy it with bitcoin or ethereum...no thanks.

Someone start a crypto thread so we can focus on important topics in the area, and not bicker about whether or not you should invest some change into this market ffs.

Let people make their own decisions.

My profit isn't in Bitcoin. There is zero risk. If I lose it all I still got my money back and took a vacation.

This is why I say put in a small amount like 1% where it doesn't cause any damage. Bitcoin isn't going to collapse anytime soon. With futures now happening, it's got another year in it.

No one is saying Bitcoin is useful, it's just been foolish to not be in it.

Keep saying I'm gambling though if it makes you feel better.

This will die off once it's conceded it's wise to diversify into high risk areas.

If everyone put their money into index funds, this thread wouldn't be here.
