Teaching at Veterinary School

Hello,

I want to become a veterinary medicine professor and am looking to pursue a DVM. However, I was looking through the faculty of some schools and it seems that they all have PhDs. Is it necessary or at least heavily recommended to get a PhD if you want to teach? Can you teach with just a DVM?

As you saw online, all professors have a DVM and PhD. Professors typically don't just teach - they research as well.

It's not impossible but not the norm. I believe a lot of residencies have you do research work that may lead you to a graduate degree. I'm not sure if clinical track professors still do some level of research besides teaching and time in clinics. For tenure track certainly research would be a larger focus.

The only solely DVMs I can think of at schools either do small animal general health, or are anatomy professors/lectures. Options are limited and you'll probably less money than other faculty; might make more as a GP at a private practice depending.

Yes, you can be eligible for a teaching position at a veterinary school with a DVM -- if you are also boarded in a Specialty. Otherwise, you will also need a PhD, MSc, or some other graduate degree.

Really depends on the university. Many are PhD heavy and it seems like a majority of their profs have PhDs. Other schools are more clinical in nature and have majority of their teaching staff without PhDs. It's rare to be hired as faculty without becoming a specialist though.

DVM can teach undergrad/technical courses. Our vet tech program is mostly taught by community vets that I don't believe are boarded. There's an RVT who does the labs but she has a Master's degree. But if you do want to teach at a vet school then yes, you'll probably need education past DVM.
