Are we paid specialist salaries as NHSC scholar specialists? How much is that compared to the norm in our respective fields?

I'm assuming you're referring to ob and psych as specialties. NHSC scholars are PRIMARY care. See Cali-obs posts for what that means in Ob. In my area, ob pay in CHCs is MUCH less than the going salary in private practice. On the flip side, they also work much fewer hours. I would guess the pay for psych would be comparable, in that you would be paid substantially less.

There might be some hope of getting a better salary if you fulfilled your obligation w/ IHS or the prison system, or in a more remote setting (American Samoa, for ex) where you could theoretically get a position which involved a fair amount of inpatient work. But that is NOT likely. It's also important to realize that there are far fewer ob slots than FP slots, which limits you geographically and makes getting a position more competitive.

Looking at the OP's prior posts, I believe he is interested in serving in the NHSC as a dentist. I am less familiar with regional need/salary variations for dentists.

smq123, I respect your presence here on the boards. Your posts have been very helpful for the SDN community and for fellow NHSC scholars.
I'm doing a 3 year commitment. When should I start seeking employment with clinics that I prefer to work for? And apparently since not every clinic is listed on NHSC's website; how do you suggest I seek out NHSC clinics in a particular city? Any more advice?
Posts I've read recently about NHSC have been extremely disturbing, especially the post describing the scholarship program as a "dinosaur that cannot be eliminated due to political reasons."
