Seriously. Same with the cowards at Facebook and Twitter who waited until the last two weeks of his term to de-platform him.

The biggest consideration will come down to filibuster overrides. I fully expect Mitch to go into full obstruction mode, in which case most of the above can't happen unless Manchin agrees to filibuster overrides. I don't think he will at first, but if Mitch is obstructing everything and the 2 years are slipping by he may change his mind.
There used to be a time where one had to actually stand up and speak for a prolonged period of time to do a filibuster. The Senate could easily revert to that policy.

Sure. That’s what we need a functioning government run by drunken sailors with no regard for the budget whatsoever. The answer to Trump’s fiscal irresponsibility is to double down and spend twice or three times as much as he did. Great.
They have no regard for the kids in grade school who are going to inherit a 50 trillion. Dollar deficit and a currency worth 1/2 as much as today.
This is just shameful, reckless government run by socialist hacks with no regard for this nation.
Higher taxes are just part of the solution. Controlling spending is also crucial for this nation’s future.
Before Vector2 chimes in about the Trump tax cuts the fact is those can be reversed and taxes raised higher on that same group. That’s not the same as giving away the treasury to every citizen who can never repay the handouts.
I think you're going a bit overboard when we haven't even seen proposals. I predict we'll see increased taxes that offset most deficit spending

I don't think that issue is quite so simple. These are media platforms that have grown to the point that they're effectively the primary national platforms for speech.

I want to know what the president and other public figures of note are saying.

They should've waited until Jan 21st at least.

Yeah keep in mind the courts issued an injunction against Trump a number of years ago saying that he could not block anyone from his Twitter feed.

The success of FB and Twitter have really put them in a weird sitch. They are technically private platforms and they have their own TOS and can do whatever they want if users are breaking those TOS. OTOH, the freakin’ President is on your platform, uses it as his primary communication tool, and has 100m followers.

It’s a tough spot to be in vis a vis freedom of speech, and even if social media can do whatever they want I think they should de facto treat the President with a very hands off approach when it comes to censorship. And I think that that’s really what they’ve done. However, trump got to the point where he was essentially shouting fire in a movie theater, and even 1A doesn’t allow for that.

Trump scared ****less of going to prison, now wanting reconciliation.

I would be all in favor of that if the people forced to listen to it were allowed to pelt the speaker with eggs and rotten fruits/veggies. Hell I might even watch cSPAN

Who said they mean nothing?

You are equating people attacking a police precinct that has no bearing on my existence to people attacking the seat of federal governance of the country with the stated goal of trying to stop transition of power of the executive branch. If you can't see the difference then you are part of the problem.

And there was so much conservative pearl clutching over the Seattle bull**** zone or whatever it was called it was on fox 24/7. People on this forum have cited concern over Portland riots as a reason they supported the failed despot trump because they were so afraid the left wouldn't support law and order. So I am confused as to why you think nobody cared before.

On both sides. :D
Not in this particular case. Only Republicans hitched their wagon to Trumps crazy train. His fantasy about widespread voter fraud is a JOKE and these clowns particularly Cruz, Hawley, Ron Johnson ought to be ashamed of themselves. They played into his conspiracy theories either because there are as dumb as Trump themselves or (more likely) they are making a calculated political move for when they try to court the "deplorables".

Ben Sasse I give a bit of credit and Mitt Romney even more. Even the Grim Reaper and Mike Pence showed up.

There was plenty of pearl clutching regarding Seattle and Portland. Trump even mentioned them during the debates. Where have you been?

When I saw those dinguses storming the capital and the capital police essentially allowing them through I kept thinking how different they were handwhen compared to any BLM protest.

I saw no tanks or rubber bullets. And it took hours for the national guard to show up.

Im glad the bias was there in plain sight so the world could see America’s hypocrisy.

Taking a knee during the national anthem doesn’t seem so bad now, does it? Hehe.

Those people got to the Capitol because DC police allowed them to. The same DC whose black mayor refused federal support just one day earlier. One should wonder, why did she do that, having been warned of what was coming?

That doesn't change the fact that the Capitol Police were significantly underprepared for a mob protesting at their doors. Hence they got overwhelmed. There was not much they could have done (they were a drop in the ocean), except call for the DC National Guard, which Trump opposed until after the building was stormed. The only alternative, at that point, would have been a bloodbath. I'm curious what the congressional investigation will unearth.

The bias was mainly Trump's, let that penetrate your tunnel visions. It was also Trump who sent that mob to the Capitol, knowing well that it was poorly guarded.

It seems that some people see bias everywhere, except in their own thoughts. As I said, self-victimization and paranoia.

The "bias" was a direct result of last year's BLM protests. We can't have it both ways: we can't egg on the police both when they use lethal force and when they don't, second-guessing them at every step. Imagine if we had to practice medicine like that, on a daily basis. Regardless, the Capitol (or DC) Police should have been much better prepared for rioters; that was incompetence or lack of resources.

P.S. Disrespecting the national flag or anthem is never OK, however people rationalize it. Millions were wounded or died for those national symbols. Otherwise, one can kneel all one wants, as far as I am concerned.

The republican party had a choice between being seditionists riling up the resentment of it's base, or being the party of fiscal responsibility. They have shown through multiple periods of governance that it is just lip service. Democrats have largely had lower deficits than republican presidents. So not sure where this 2-3X fear comes from?
Straw man fallacy.

Straw man fallacy.
The last president to balance the budget (and even show a surplus) was Clinton. That was a generation ago. It's been getting worse with every president since.

A couple more generations or less, and the dollar may not be worth the paper it's printed on.

Where are you seeing the mayor refused federal assistance? I read the opposite. I thought she requested the national guard but was denied days prior to the incident.

And miss me with the disrespecting the flag BS. There’s nothing disrespectful about kneeling during the national anthem. Some of you people are so obsessed in symbolism you forget about real Americans who suffer injustices.

Storming the capital building and hanging confederate and nazi flags (there was one) is 1000x more disrespectful than what Kaepernick did.

You’re right. The DC law enforcement was very unpreparedlooked like a bunch of scared little girls handling that mob. That never would have happened with a BLM protest. Heck, they had more security when ACB was confirmed to the SCOTUS and that didn’t have anything to do with BLM.

Trump is trash and so is anyone who supports his insurrection inciting ass. Tis all.

"No DCNG personnel shall be armed during this mission, and at no time, will DCNG personnel or assets be engaged in domestic surveillance, searches, or seizures of US persons," Bowser, a Democrat, wrote in the letter.

DC Police Chief Robert Contee told reporters on Monday that the National Guard will assist with "crowd management" and traffic control, freeing the city's police officers to focus on potential acts of violence and other security issues."

"Bowser's office told CNN that the plan includes the activation of 340 guardsmen, while the total deployment at any given time will be 114. The defense official said the personnel will be deployed to a few dozen points on the streets, accompanied by a DC police officer at each one. Guardsmen will also be deployed to Metro subway stations in the city alongside local officers. Their focus will primarily be on the Metro and traffic, a spokesperson for Bowser said."

This may be just the law in peaceful times, in which case I don't know why she didn't ask for federal officers who have legal law enforcement privileges, to supplement the police.

We probably won't have a good understanding of who dropped the ball (DC mayor and/or Capitol Police) until a proper investigation is conducted.

It is a data driven fact. Police are more likely to respond to minority/left wing protests with violence then right wing/white supremacist, even controlling for the peacefulness of the event. It was true for the Klan and Civil rights activists, and its true now with proud boys, anti mask rallies, and BLM.

We are not asking police to brutalize right wing protesters. While security was extremely poor, should have been better planned, and should have prevented the breach, once it happened I'm glad it wasn't turned into a blood bath. We are asking police to treat minorities and their causes the same way.

Also an interesting side note. With the death of the Capitol police officer, Trump could potentially face a felony murder charge. If Trump can be proven to incite the violence that led to the death, that is very much in the purvue of felony murder. Not a lawyer, but some food for thought.

Right, it’s the blatant denial around a fact that truly baffles me. It’s almost like claiming there was no such thing as slavery. But then again a lot of those same people do believe in fiction.

Trump is a populist, not a conservative. Hence most conservatives were upset that Trump became the nominee. What kind of conservatives have had 3 wives, work in entertainment, and were democrats for much of their life? Lol
Trump was never a conservative. The "elites" in Manhattan were mostly democrats and they would have nothing to do with him since they knew he was a buffoon even way back then. Also, Obama made a joke at his expense at a dinner one time. This is the level of maturity we are looking at.

I voted for him twice (really voted against Hillary and against Biden but that’s another conversation) and I gotta say this mother****er needs to go. Trying to overturn an election and stoking doubt in the democratic process is unforgivable. I know I’m not saying anything new but people should know that there are people out there who voted for him that do NOT support this **** in any way shape or form.

And the people who “stormed” the capital (quotes because I think the word stormed should be reserved for actual soldiers in actual combat not some Buffalo-horned buffoons who happen to break stuff in the face of zero opposition) should be tracked down, put on trial and sentenced to the absolute fullest extent of the law. Drag them out of their houses in the middle of the night, I don’t care. Send a message that you do not **** with elections. Honestly I think what they did was way worse than all the BLM rioting because it was an attempt to undermine the foundation of our democracy. Bring the hammer down on these people.

Yes, but what makes you so sure Trump (and his side) is the only one who **** with [these] elections? A question if I may: if Trump was CONVINCED that a Harris presidency and AOC and her ilk pulling the strings behind the scenes would 100% lead to the destruction of a capitalist US and the establishment of a socialist regime, would he not be morally obligated to try and win at any cost, including trying to **** elections in order to save his beloved country?

You sound like one of my philosophy professors! ;)

Im not sure at all that trump is the only one. Doesn’t matter to me. The people who walked into the capital and vandalized it did so with the intent to overturn an election. An election that had repeatedly been unsuccessfully challenged in court.

if he was 100% sure (which is an impossibility since we’re talking about the future) his loss would lead to socialism he’s still wrong for trying to overturn an election. The repercussions of losing faith in the democratic process would be extreme. At least if he loses and then makes it publicly known that we need to fight in the senate and house we can still, maybe, fend off socialism.

it’s not appropriate for any individual to assume they know what’s best for 300+ million people. That’s what the democratic process (republic really) is for.

No. The founders set up this republic in such a way that we as a nation can change over time. If the people want Socialism like Vector2 and his crew then that is what we will get. All we have is SCOTUS to provide a check on their intrusion into our lives and violation of the U.S. Constitution.

The Socialist regime is an inevitability over time. The younger generations have been poisoned with Marxism, Socialism and the notion that the U.S.A. is not the greatest nation ever to be founded in the history of this planet. Capitalism is the path to prosperity and has made the USA great. The voters have decided to keep chipping away at our way life by electing socialists into Congress. By the time the average voter realizes that socialism has destroyed this country and ruined the U.S. currency it will be too late.

I do not believe a civil war or violent insurrection is the answer to socialism. The pain and suffering which comes from socialism must first occur before the people wake up to the solution (as envisioned by our founders).

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.”

Madison Cawthorn (R) NC-11 Congressman-elect just turned 25 in August and will be the youngest US Congressman in history. You might have seen him speaking at the RNC, rising for the flag from his wheelchair. He's a rising star - and received a campaign donation from ASA-PAC this fall.

I happily agree, and I'm in GA. I've never understood the appeal of John Ossoff. He's a nobody that came out of nowhere, a total manufactured Democratic candidate. He lost what was up to then the most expensive US House race ever to Karen Handel, and has never been elected to any public office. He'll now likely lose the most expensive US Senate race ever to David Purdue.

Raphael Warnock had the good fortune to be able to stay above the fray in the primary, run fairly positive ads, and let Loeffler and Doug Collins sling mud at each other and totally ignore him. Had Collins stayed out of the race (which he should have but his pride got the best of him), Loeffler would have won with 60% or more. All of Collins voters will move to Loeffler in the runoff.

Cawthorn “rising star” incites mob at the Capitol on january 6 and votes against certifying the election. If ASA PAC did indeed support this clown, we have problems.

Ossoff “nobody”.

Does not compute.

It's interesting what politics does, right? For some reason it often allows people to view others as something they aren't. I said here not long ago that Ossoff and Warnock weren't terribly appealing candidates for me personally. I probably should've read more about Warnock as I think I was wrong. Ossoff though I still don't find appealing. I'm absolutely astounded he won, but Trump effect.

I'm not sure how ANYONE could defend Cawthorn or say he's the future of anything. Leave his MAGA Trumpism out of it. Just read his wikipedia page. What has this kid done other than lie and deceive people and create a persona of something he just isn't? It leads me to worry that like Trump, he's got some serious psychiatric issues going on.

After the Capitol riots the ASA sent out an email (and I don't recall the exact wording) admitting they'd essentially been deceived in who they donated to and would be more careful going forward. It's easy to imagine that they were alluding to Andy Harris, an actual ANESTHESIOLOGIST! Too bad Andy has fallen off the MAGA deep end as opposed to simply being a decent conservative.

Again, I don't know why the GOP is doing this to itself. But if they don't want to continue losing to rather unappealing candidates in big races in traditionally GOP states (Georgia!) they'll distance themselves from Trump and come back to reality.
