DeVry announced Dr. Shepherd's appointment 10-18-04

Here is part of an interview he did while President of Bastyr, the
naturopathic college

http://www.bastyr.edu/president/default.asp

"What brought Tom Shepherd out of the conventional medical world to
head Bastyr University? He explains, "I am strong on belief
structures. I'm here because I believe in what Bastyr is doing, what
we are and what we represent. My professional life has always been
driven by trying to make a difference. I could have continued to be a
corporate CEO, but that didn't engage me. I like the challenge of
looking outside the envelope for solutions. I have helped hospitals
achieve success, and I've put that same energy into complementary and
alternative medicine therapies."

The Shepherd family's history does indeed reveal a passion for natural
therapies, which Dr. Shepherd describes: "Back in 1980, I was
diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I started to read and learn about the
disease and found out the potential complications of having it, after
so many years of having high blood sugar running through my system. It
was then that I decided, as a 30 year old, I was going to do the best
that I could do to be well. So my wife and I started a journey of
studying natural ways of taking care of ourselves. We visited
chiropractors and treated our children naturally as well. My wife
started making her own tinctures and remedies in the home."

With natural therapies Shepherd's son got off conventional drugs for
asthma and his mother made a miraculous recovery from serious health
problems. Given the limited CAM resources in the Southeastern United
States, Dr. Shepherd and his wife had to rely a lot on themselves. Now
he is glad to be working at Bastyr, training providers of
complementary medical care, so individuals will not have to do what
his family had to do to find complementary health care solutions on
their own."

Oh, brother. Nice detective work, azskeptic.

I, for one, hope that this does not truly reflect "Dr." Shepherd's core beliefs, and is not indicative of the direction he intends to take Ross University. Without getting into a dissertation or side discussion on naturopathy, let's just say that it should not be inferred from his appointment that Ross offers an "alternative" to a mainstream medical education.

I hope that this is clear at the corporate level. Time will tell.
