Respected Desis,

I'm strongly considering going back to "our beloved" India for Medical School. However, to further strenghten and solidify my intention of going back, it would really help me if you guy's can answer some or all of these following questions.

1.) What is life as a doctor like in India (if I go to medical school in India, and "incase" decide to live there and not come back to the U.S.).
- Is it easy finding work as a doctor there?
- How much money do doctors, both generalists and specialists, make there (a rough estimate)?

2.)If I decide to stay here in the U.S., and hopefully get into and graduate from medical school here, can I still legally go back to India and work as a doctor there in the future?

3.) Lastly, what are the requirements (if you know) to get admitted into Indian Medical Schools for a person who has already done 3 years of college in the U.S.?
- Are they the same like that of a high-school student?
- If its different, do the admission people look at and consider your U.S. college GPA, classes taken, volunteer work done, etc. ?
- What is the lowest college GPA you can have to get admitted (I'm asking because right now my GPA, beign at a 3.1, isn't that high).

Respected Desis, sorry for this somewhat long and somewhat confusing message. Indeed, I'd truly appreciate and be extremely grateful to you guys for your help and guidance. Thank You very much in advance.

Hi there,

I'll let you in on some 2nd hand information, as I have never studied medicine in India.

The system in India is very hierachy-based. I've seen nurses stand up and say "Good morning Sir" when a senior doctor passes by. Here in the west, we're entitled to a critical opinion and find it acceptable to correct a senior if we feel he or she is wrong. However, I don't think it would be acceptable to do the same in India, at least not to the same degree.

Is it easy for a MD to find a job in India? I don't think you'll find many places where it's not easy for us to find a job (except Italy?). India especially, despite having probably the largest production of doctors has a growing population and doctors emigrating to the west. So I don't think you have to worry.

As for the salary, on KEM's (hospital in Mumbai) you can read that a resident doctor is paid about 14,000 rps /month, while a professor gets around 40,000 rps (which I think is peanuts in a place like Mumbai). The big moolah is in the private business where doctors can make much much more, as a matter of fact the sky is the limit. It's not uncommon for a good indian doctor to make somewhere around 500,000 rps a month, perhaps even more.

I suggest you take a look at some websites to find out more about studying in India as a NRI/foreigner. Take a look at KEM (King Edward Memorial) hospital's website - it's very informative. Or take a look at Manipal's or Vellore's websites.

I'm going to take an elective at KEM this summer, and am looking forward to it! :D
