I did a google search on the derm residency. Looks like it is a 4 year program, where the 1st year is IM and the next 3 are derm. This is called a categorical program? Here are my questions: first off, is this information correct? Second, if someone doesnt match into categorical derm, can you do an IM residency, then apply for the 3 years of derm after that? If so, how common is this?
Lastly, is it possible to just do 3 years of derm out of med school without the 1 year of IM? Thanks.

Yes, yes (dunno), and no (unless you do a prelim peds year, prelim surgery year, or transitional year - bottom line is you need to do an internship first).
