Residency name importance

Does it matter where you train (I understand American residencies all prepare surgeons extremely well)? Does this affect 1st job/fellowship prospects? Is it similar to the argument for going to a good medical school or undergrad? Does this change if you want academics vs private/cosmetic practice?
