I am a M4 and I am considering taking time off to do research to boost my resume after medical school. Does anyone know of any funding available or of anyone who did something similar? I am interested in going into GI and I know the field is very competitive.

Hopefully you'll match to an IM residency program that has some research going on. Just be smart with your rank list. Once you get there hook-up with some GI attendings and get involved in something they have going. Seems like that would be the best way to beef up your resume and land a GI fellowship. It's not easy to do research as an IM resident, but I know plenty that have pulled it off. I guess I'm not sure why taking a year off for research makes you more competitive, but maybe I'm showing my naiveté.
