I was informed by my pre-health advisor not to retake.

You will be able to get into the lower-mid level schools who are more forgiving about it. But the Ivy leagues and higher tier schools would outright reject you.

I would take off stonybrook and Rutgers.

Quick question:
Is a DAT retake a must for my stats? I rarely see anyone online speak of my gpa dat combo..
I dont think so unless you are looking for top tier or ivy league dental schools. You have good shots for NYU and Tufts.

Howard and Meharry if you are URM, if not I would take those out. You have good stats and should apply to more, but it is up to you.

I almost did a very similar thing. Actually I applied to 36 schools last cycle. I had a similar GPA (3.26 sgpa, 3.5 cgpa) but a higher DAT with 19 TS/20AA/23 PAT. Ended up receiving 8 interviews and 3 acceptances.

My experience with this was I wasn't able to finish ALL of the secondaries I ended up half assing many of them and even just deciding not to do a few due to time constraints. I'm the end I just focused really hard on the secondaries of schools I knew I wanted (about 10 schools) which resulted in interviews from most of those schools. Anyways just my 2 cents, good luck op.

I assume you meant this post for the 53 school thread? haha
Anywho, 36 schools and only 8 interviews, I should probably increase my school list because my GPA is lower

DAT scores are great, but GPA a bit low for OHSU and possibly UCSF (but you're a CA resident). I think the list is good minus OHSU. I wanted to include them as well but hear their avg matriculant GPA is 3.6+, so I might not be sending my app there.

What have you done differently than the last 3 years? Have you re-written your personal statement and received new letters?

WOw, with this stats and you did not get in anywhere then there must be something suspicious in your apps and it could be rec letters.

His dat is average, but those ECs look killer. It could be the PS?

Hi, I just posted a new thread actually. My LORs have changed only a little because those that are writing on my behalf I have worked with extensively. I have rewritten my statement it for the 4th time. I think this time is the best though as I've gone all out to explain my story.

Sold shot at Buffalo and probably at Stony as well. Maybe throw a few more schools in there that aren't state schools (seems like you want to stay in the tri-state area). Good luck.

Are you all reporting your GPAs calculated according to AADSAS? Like including retakes and such, if you have any.

This is my 4th cycle applying. Last year I applied to 25 schools and got 1 interview.

What's your sGPA or BCP? You only mentioned undergrad and grad GPA's.

GPA: sGPA: 3.61, BCP: 3.76, oGPA:3.66
DAT: 21AA, 21TS, 23RC, 18PAT, 17 QR (retaken after 19AA/19TS)

Shadowing: 80 orthodontist, 5 pediatric (one day), idk how many gp, but have interned at the gp dental office for 2.5 years
Volunteering: A lot that I won't bother listing.
Research: None, except about 30 hours helping look for motility assays for a TA's project.
Work: Server for 3+ years, paid dental intern 2.5 years
Residency: FL

Received some pretty cool awards from my school.

Major concerns: I physically can't finance applications to many schools right now and don't want to screw myself over. Suggested school or two to add? I am really hoping UF would be a solid in for me as 90% of the class is FL residents or LECOM because they accept lower stats...but I'm still freaking out because this is literally only six schools. :(

UF
LECOM
U Penn
Pitt
U Mich
UAB

Considering adding Nova.

You have great stats, I would borrow money from family or a small loan and apply to more schools. Another 1k is worth it instead of possibly missing out this year.

GPA: 3.360 oGPA, 3.835 sGPA (overall GPA is low from attempting college after high school with no direction taking random classes…I dropped out of college at 19 and returned at 24; currently I am 28 and I would consider myself nontraditional. Moreover, I have all science prereqs. completed)
DAT: 20AA, 21TS, 21 OC, 23 GC, 20 Bio, 19RC, 19QR, 22PAT,
Shadowing: 120 hrs (general dentist/periodontist/endodontist)
Volunteering: over 1000 hrs
Research: "click" chemistry and green chemistry with TPGS-750M nano micelles in water
Work: Previously worked full-time at UPS as an air logistics specialist and driver until returning to school at 24 to become a dentist.
Residency: IL
Letter of recommendation: Committee and one from a DDS

School list
Already applied:
  1. UIC (top choice)
  2. SIU
  3. Midwestern (IL)
  4. Marquette
  5. Indiana
  6. University of Iowa
  7. Louisville
  8. UCSF (would be a nice change to get away from IL)

Unsure if I have the stats to apply:
  1. Pacific (just heard about this school yesterday and I have a potential connection)
  2. Michigan University
Honestly, being older (28) I like the idea that I can finish in three years at Pacific but I don't know what kind of students they generally accept. If anyone can chime in and let me know if I even have a shot at Pacific it would be much appreciative.

EDIT: Ok so I just found some info on Pacific that I had not seen previously. I am thinking I shouldn't bother because I have W's from 2007 and they sat they don't take applicant w/ W's. I wonder if it makes a difference that they were from almost 10 years ago?

Thank you in advanced for reading my post.

I appreciate that, thank you. I'm working on pulling out a loan now, but it might be a while. For now, I'll be researching schools with high OOS acceptance rates. Definitely open to suggestions by anyone.

One of the red-flags that I have is that I have several retroactive drops during several quarters at my 4 year college. I was having some medical issues that made it very difficult for me to perform fully in my classes. Would this be a big issue?

Moreover, another red-flag would be that I have so little shadowing hours with a dentist. I shadowed physicians for at least 100+ hours but I haven't had any luck finding a dentist to shadow.

Many of the schools you pick require 100 hours with a general dentist. You are going to have to pick it up. Also will have to explain why you shadowed so many physicians, former pre med?

Yeah, former pre-med. Shadowed physicians so much that I realized the lifestyle wasn't for me. It took some time for me to reconcile with myself that going to medical school might not be the best choice for me, even though I put so much effort to shadow MDs in the first place. Of the schools I listed, I know that UCLA, UCSF, Columbia (possibly?) and UPenn don't put too much emphasis into shadowing. I was hoping that I could do more dentist shadowing after I submit my application and that maybe the amount of research I've done will look favorable. I don't want to wait another year to apply, but what do you guys suggest? Any other schools that don't require as much shadowing hours?

Also, thanks for helping!

Not quite sure where you heard that from. I know for a fact that Penn certainly does expect applicants to have enough shadowing to know what they are getting into. It may not be 200 hours, but 20 won't cut it.

@JLT223 is going to Upenn, you can shoot him an message about how much they put into shadowing. Maybe a few years back not as much more recently all schools are putting more emphasis on shadowing. He's also a former pre med so he could give valuable insight.
