My older brother is an attending at Yale Pedo. I have heard on good sources that Yale accepts students at a rate of 5 students to every 100 applicants; However, in recent years that figure has dropped considerably. Stats have to be impeccable obviously. Best of luck!

AAPD's residency info has some applicant:acceptance ratios, some of which are even steeper than the Yale stat mentioned above (20:1 for Yale above, Jacobi on AAPD's site is 40:1). That said, who knows how old or valid those stats are, and it's also not really addressing your question which is really asking how many people interview for 1 spot. One LMC program I interviewed at told us they interview 32 people for 3 spots, but it's not as simple as saying that's a 10:1 ratio (or a 10% chance of getting in), because it's all complicated by the fact that most people interview at multiple programs, and then go through the match process. Some folks have told me that 6-7 is the # to aim for to be "safe," but I don't think those recommendations were based on any kind of statistical analysis. There was another thread in this forum where someone asked a similar question and provided this analysis below... not sure how s/he arrived at these numbers, but it's the closest thing I've found that actually answers your question -- I've wondered the same thing.

I found some statistics on the MATCH site and I plugged it in to excel to get some percentages.

This is only for MATCH and ONLY for people who successfully matched. If anyone actually knows numbers overall and not just for successful matches that'd be great.

Number of ranks on left and on right the percentage of people who have matched at that rank or before e.g. for aegd 68% ranked at their first spot, 89% ranked at either 1st or 2nd. I

What goes on during a pre-interview? If you bomb it, you don't get an invite?

They asked pretty standard interview questions (Tell me about yourself, Why pedo, etc..) and said after they evaluate the pre-interviews, they'll choose who they want to interview in person.

AAPD's residency info has some applicant:acceptance ratios, some of which are even steeper than the Yale stat mentioned above (20:1 for Yale above, Jacobi on AAPD's site is 40:1). That said, who knows how old or valid those stats are, and it's also not really addressing your question which is really asking how many people interview for 1 spot. One LMC program I interviewed at told us they interview 32 people for 3 spots, but it's not as simple as saying that's a 10:1 ratio (or a 10% chance of getting in), because it's all complicated by the fact that most people interview at multiple programs, and then go through the match process. Some folks have told me that 6-7 is the # to aim for to be "safe," but I don't think those recommendations were based on any kind of statistical analysis. There was another thread in this forum where someone asked a similar question and provided this analysis below... not sure how s/he arrived at these numbers, but it's the closest thing I've found that actually answers your question -- I've wondered the same thing.

Attached is a message sent to faculty and staff by Provost Baldasty. We felt it important to share with you as well, and to provide an explanation of the contents of the message.



The Financial Executive Committee, which currently oversees the finances of the School of Dentistry, has concluded that there is a need to stop new enrollment for five graduate/residency programs. These are:
Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology

General Practice Residency

Pediatric Dentistry

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Medicine

If you are already enrolled in one of these programs,your education will continue as planned here at the University of Washington. The provost is initiating “teach out” for the Oral Radiology and General Practice Residency programs, meaning that he is initiating the process for closing those programs once the current trainees have completed the programs. According to the Commission on Dental Accreditation, “Students/Residents who are enrolled and successfully complete the program during the Teach-Out will be considered graduates of an accredited program.”



Should a decision be made to close any of the other three programs, your uninterrupted education and graduation as we work through these fiscal challenges will remain the school’s highest priority. However, no final decision has been made as to these programs’ status other than that new students/residents will not be enrolled this year.

No, not according to the program faculty where I went to dental school. It’s just another data point in your application, albeit an important one. You may even see your school offering “courtesy interviews” to students in your class that realistically have little chance of getting in.
