No photo, but I made a @SkiOtter special tonight...grilled cheese. Cheddar with a smidge of mozzarella for the ooziness.

Does it count if I was back seat driving as someone else was actually doing the cooking? Because if it does the answer is salmon, rice, and honey garlic veggies :)

Ok folks,

I went to England and had some delicious tea on my last day that I'm now obsessed with, but they don't sell it in the US unless I pay £20 of shipping costs on a £2 box of tea.

People who drink tea regularly, what are your go-to brands/kinds?

This was a black tea blend that was very rich & tasted like it would have also made an excellent boba-style milk tea.

Curious what brand it was

My tea snob British friend only drinks Yorkshire tea. I have yet to get him to make me a cup of it, but apparently it is the best. I can update once that occurs haha.

Mariage frères has amazing tea. Also not cheap, but at least it is available in the US (I think?)
Also heard good things about Kusmi tea brand.

I drink a ton of tea but am unfortunately a pleb who isn't picky about brands (and I also don't drink a ton of caffeinated teas). I really like Celestial Seasonings though, they have some marvelous blends that are unique but still hit the spot. They specialize in herbal teas but I know they do make black tea blends as well. However, my selection of their stuff is probably a lot greater here than where you're at since they're based in Boulder.

Guys is this really a necessary argument to have rn? On the professional form? I know it’s a social thread, but like... stop. This isn’t helping anything.

Indeed it is a professional forum. Personal attacks are against ToS anywhere though, so please avoid doing so. I will also note that I do not get up in arms if pictures show up in a couple places. That is not the purpose of the restriction for crossposting. If anyone feels like ToS has been breeched, please use the report function where a group of moderators review it for any necessary actions.

I want to know what all these things are
I don't recognize all of these things, but they all look delicious! You're definitely putting me to shame for heating up leftover pizza....

Thanks guys!!! <3

From top to bottom:
Tabbouleh: chopped parsley, red onions w sumac, tomato, pomegranate seeds, bulgur wheat, lemon, olive oil
Hummus foul: hummus topped with stewed fava beans (stewed w garlic, coriander, cumin, and cardamom; topped with lemon, olive oil, parsley, and pimento pepper)
Fried eggplant w tehina sauce, pomegranate seeds, and pistachios
Fresh baked laffa bread (an Iraqi flatbread, like pita but larger and thinner and no pocket)
Jerusalem hummus: hummus topped with ground beef (ground beef, onions, garlic, pine nuts, and Baharat spice which is a blend of black pepper, cardamom, coriander, cumin, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and paprika. We couldn’t find pre-mixed Baharat at Whole Foods, so my mom and I actually bloomed all of the whole seed spices and then ground them in a mortar and pestle (since the spice grinder broke on us))

The hummus was also all home made

Also, @Squeaksmom I definitely eat re-heat leftovers for 99% of my meals. I just love love love my parents kitchen and I also really like cooking for groups (and hate cooking for myself), so when my mom told me she was having our family friends over last night and asked me if I could organize dinner while she was at work I was super excited and spent literally all day in the kitchen and almost never actually do things this elaborate otherwise lolol

Question: what does sumac taste like? I have seen it listed as an ingredient, but I know nothing about it....is it a powder or a leaf you buy fresh?

It’s a berry but you buy it already dried and powdered. It’s a little sour/tart. I haven’t used it a lot so I can’t really elaborate any more than that lol. I just usually don’t love tabbouleh (I mean, it’s literally just a parsley salad and usually the parsley just overwhelms everything, and I also find plain raw onions pretty boring), so I was looking for ways to make the tabbouleh fit my tastes a little better and the prep for the onions was super easy (literally just diced onions, some red wine vinegar, and the sumac) so I figured why not. It’s also why I threw the pomegranate seeds in. I actually ended up LOVING this tabbouleh and will definitely make it again. The whole recipe was SUPER easy too.

2c chopped parsley
¼-⅓ cup diced red onion (can be plain too)
1 cup diced tomato
½ cup bulgur wheat (1/2 cup is measured dry... not sure what then ends up being once its hydrated. Also, you don’t have to actually cook it, just cover the dry bulgur with ~4 inches of water for an hour and strain)
I threw in a decent amount of pomegranate seeds too
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp olive oil (I like the really olive-y tasting olive oil for this)
And then you just throw it all together in a bowl

And its actually better made in advance and then left to sit in the fridge so all the flavors incorporate a little more

Sorry that was my super long answer to your sumac question
But those onions would also be sooo goood on tacos or something like that too if you slivered instead of diced them.

Anyone here have a pressure cooker?

That said, I am really trying to eat better this upcoming school year, while also spending less on food. Any tips on that? I've spent some time this summer attempting to get better at cooking. I made some curry last night. I want to learn to make pad Thai and pad kee mao. We spend quite a bit eating out so if I could learn to make some of the dishes I frequently get, I think this would help.
I also need help with lunches. I cant spend another year eating frozen meals for lunches haha. it was excruciating by the end.

Meal prep and plan your meals in advance, buy in bulk, and freeze things (extra things you buy in bulk, make meals in bulk and freeze some for easy meals other times) are my top tips! If you know what you are going to eat all week, you can usually save money by buying a larger pack of something vs two smaller packs at two separate times (and not having to go back to the grocery store a second time limits impulse buys more)

You have celiac, right? I don't have a pressure cooker but I love making lentil and rice bowls with caramelized onions and a fried egg. I usually cook the lentils and rice in a rice cooker with stock instead of water, and pre-cook batches of onions and keep them frozen to be reheated later. The whole meal is basically time for the rice cooker to do its thing and for the egg to cook. All of the ingredients are pretty cheap and last forever

Yes I do.
That sounds tasty! I do have a rice cooker and will frequently eat eggs and rice with some tamari. But adding lentils and carmelized onions sounds like a great way to add more flavor and protein.

And by frozen meals, do you mean ones from companies that you buy premade and then heat or things that you have made and then frozen to eat later?
Good ideas. toward the latter half of the year I was freezing some food to bring as lunches. but for the most part I brought Amy's meals (bought at discount) or something along those lines

I also really wanna get good at making grain or salad bowls as those sound like an easy way to make lunches or dinners for cheap and with varying tastes.

Yeah my suggestion was gonna be grain/salad bowls. You can get basic ingredients for them and end up with several different combinations that are easy to put together, as long as you have a selection of proteins, cooked veggies, raw veggies, and grains.

Ok so I attempted to make a filling, tasty, and nutritious salad and I think it turned out pretty well! Ziggy thought so too as he actually took a piece of my lettuce and took off and ate it in the middle of my meal :cat: little bugger
Anyways the salad has romaine, red pepper, heirloom cherry tomatoes, hoisin tempeh, Parmesan, gf croutons, and dressing. It was goood :hungry: I also had a lingonberry sparkling water

After learning from SDN that my flour tortillas were responsible for the downfall of my enchiladas years ago, I felt I was probably safe trying them again if I made the correction

Butternut squash + black beans
Verdict is: delicious

Kind of a pain in the ass to make, but well worth it! :) I increased the garlic and cut back a bit on the pasta sauce.

I just want to add, the biggest reason it was a pain to make was because the zucchini wasn't mature enough to scoop out nicely. There was a lot of aggressive gouging with a spoon. Otherwise it wasn't really that bad.

It has always been interesting to me that zucchini is the only squash we eat before it gets a rind

Have you seen how big they can get before they do though?

I'm losing weight again and can't afford to drop much more. I fought back from becoming underweight last year due to health problems, which aren't fully resolved. Currently pounding back chips & guac. It's a healthy fat... right?
