Options for academia as a GP?

Hey all,

I am a pre-dent (shooting for UCLA) trying to figure out some possible options for the future. As of now, my plan is to become a GP when out of dental school. However, I have just started research and I really enjoy doing it. I know I wouldn't want it as a full-time job, but I am interested on doing it on the side.

I have heard that DDS/PhD programs are catered toward people who just want to go to an academic route, so I am wondering if it is even possible to do joint practicing and academic work? Are there are DDS/PhD programs (or any types of programs!) that encourage doing both?

I know lots of schools offer DDS/PhD programs, so I would visit their websites and contact them if you have any questions. Maybe ask if you can be put in contact with current students to see how they like that track so far and (ask the students) if the programs encourage both research & practicing as a GP.
