Official MCW Class of 2009 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your various specialty interest groups should be a great resource for setting up shadowing experiences...I know the AIG has a program in place to get people in contact with attendings that are amenable to shadowing. I would recommend going in for a call shift in anesthesiology for a few hours some night...hopefully you'll get to see some cool trauma stuff come in.

SEMA has this as well, so long as you're willing to pay the membership fee. Should be pro-rated for an M2 if you didn't join as an M1.

I'm ignoring this because I like to pretend that you're my friend and you said it as a joke.

Just like I'm ignoring the fact that I owe you 68 bucks.

I can dig it. I'm ignoring the fact that I take CK on Thursday.

i'm furthermore ignoring the fact that I should get my cholesterol checked.

I'm also choosing to ignore the fact that I was started on an anti-hypertensive last month.

Personally I believe that the best method to rapidly lower blood pressure is an acute bleed. May I be of service?

And all those lipids really help to lubricate the arteries.

I'm ignoring the fact that I have to go see a retinal specialist for the new hypopigmentation my optometrist found.

Good God. We're all falling apart at the seams. At least my PVCs went away early in med school.

I was leaning more towards trepanation. Read a great meta-analysis on it in Annals of Humour-Manipulation and Mystikal Spirit Dismissal Quarterly.

Holy crap people. it's vacation time. Heal up!

I need my wisdom teeth out and my eye prescription ramped up, but keep putting it off. I just barely passed the eye test to renew my drivers license this summer.

My dog is on prescription food and pepcid due to chronic vomiting.

That's all I got. Man you people are way sicker than me.

I had my first home-cooked meal in a week last night. Hopefully that will get me back on a regular bowel regimen.

I need to get my car in to the mechanic. The driver's side wiper doesn't touch the window any more, no matter how much I try to bend it into contact with the windshield.

ugh, that would suck in a snow storm.

I've been lucky enough to have spent a few days at my mom's house this month. However, since I only have one brother living at home and he's always busy, my mom never cooks. I actually picked up lean cuisines at the grocery store while there.

in milwaukee today. my apartment is a disaster. DC tomorrow. i'm already getting sick of this interviewing thing and i've only done 3 so far.

Yeah, I did 5 interviews in one week's time for my first set. Wayyyy too much!

wow. i refuse to do that. at least a day between each interview for me. it's tiring to be on display all day.

Best wishes Ashers! Don't breathe the tire smoke!!!!

Thanks! There's a Goodyear store in the main part of a mall I went to while in search of food. There was also a Firestone in another part of the mall, but not connected to the main part.

OH! And my hotel here, has a jacuzzi in the bedroom. Awesome.

Yeah, I did 5 interviews in one week's time for my first set. Wayyyy too much!

Geez. That sounds insane. I can't imagine that. Did they all have those dinners the night before? That's what's making it lame for me.

Yeah, that part sucked the worst. I can handle being "on" for interviews. It's the constantly having to be excited and asking insightful questions of the residents at these dinners that's so exhausting. Plus, I was really sick of restaurant food by the end....doubt I'll still fit into my suit at the end of interview season.

salads. you'll look like a dork, but just claim you have "dietary restrictions" if anyone asks, and hopefully people will be able to refrain from asking for more detail.

OK pals. Tomorrow is the big day. Cholesterol getting re-checked. Last time I offered a prize to the person that guessed the highest total cholesterol, and samenewme won the coveted "big mofo hug" prize. I went back and searched and actually found some funny memories from that series of posts....it was around christmas 2006 in the class of 2010. Sadly, the positive RPR Funk predicted must have gotten lost in the lab because it never came back.

As a refresher, here's my lipid panel from 2006.
Total Cholesterol: 236
Triglycerides 115
HDL 41
LDL 172

TSH was WNL, Lyme titer negative, CBC WNL, BMP WNL.

Once again, a "big mofo hug" will be awarded to the person with the closest guess. But even bigger fun this time, try to guess on the entire lipid panel. I'll work out the winner based on some wacky scheme and will bias it on who I really think deserves a big mofo hug.

Factors to consider: I took fish oil daily for a few months following my last test results but fell off the wagon and stopped somewhere in 2007. I recently started again approx 4-5 days ago because I don't want the leftovers to go to waste. I have not been exercising but lost 7-8 pounds around springtime. My diet had improved in 2007 but worsened again in the last year or so thanks to a fiancee that likes mac and cheese. Recall that I have a mother with elevated cholesterol who is on a statin, as well as a grandmother with high cholesterol, on a statin, who recently developed type 2 DM despite being otherwise very healthy. Uncle on the same side also has high cholesterol and is statin dependent. I do not smoke and drink occasional alcohol. I deny the use of any other recreational drugs. I am a full time medical student and work occasionally as an EMT. On exam I am afebrile, vitals are WNL. I am a well appearing, very attractive Caucasian male in no acute distress. Breath sounds are clear bilaterally and heart sounds are normal.

That's all the help you get. Get guessing, wankers.

I'm predicting essentially no change:
Total cholesterol: 230
Triglycerides: 120
HDL: 45
LDL: 158
β-hCG: 1080 mIU/ml (congrats!)

Dang it, I wanna guess no change too. I guess I'll go with:

Total: 240
Trig: 110
HDL: 40
LDL: 175

And congrats on the elevated hCG!

I didn't dare turn around, but apparently there's a woman who rides the blue metro in DC that is EXTREMELY angry at the world. We're all going to hell.

Just running around the wards now counts as exercise. I think it will be a little better (except your HDL is going down too):

Total Cholesterol: 180
Triglycerides 102
HDL 35
LDL 154

I'm just playing for fun, you can keep the big mofo hug (at least as long as I'm not sure how that differs from a regular hug).

And I don't know why everyone is congratulating you on the germ cell tumor. Any predictions what his a-FP will be?

Check the CRP levels! ...could be a candidate for Rosuvastatin

Total Cholesterol: 235
Triglycerides 120
HDL 45
LDL 170

And I'd rather have my back cracked. No! The hug! No! The back crack! Wait, I haven't even won.

Only per your very nice request...

Total Cholesterol: 240
Triglycerides 135
HDL 38
LDL 185

I feel fairly ill-prepared to venture any guess, but I will note that upon further examination, both LDL and HLD are of a particularly large size, so congrats for that.

Good luck

hi guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:hardy::hardy::hardy::D:D:D:D

total: 220
LDL: 159
HDL: 53
Trig:123

speaking of beta-HCG, how is Xandie doing over yonder?

She's good. :) And no guesses for me, I don't think about cholesterol panels anymore. I'm going to the University of Maryland today to practice laparascopic surgery on cadavers--exciting thing, residency. :)

Oh yeah, and I've delivered 202 babies via SVD or CS. :) I have the coolest job in the world.

if you couple's match with me and I couple's match with someone else who couple's matches with someone else, but only for transitional years for early military San Francisco match program than the whole computer melts down and robots take over the earth. Thanks a lot.

How much colder does it get?
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being cold as hell, what would you rate today? I can't imagine it getting much colder than this in January.

I've been sleeping waaaaaay too much because of the cold.

today was a 4. Maybe 3. You ain't seen nothing yet. Without the wind chill factored in it will be below zero at some point. With wind chill expect a day near 30 below.

Yeah, I'd give today a 3 only because most of our bodies have yet to acclimate themselves to the cold weather again this year. Come January days like today will be the average.

Yeah, got off the St Joe's TY wait list today!

Really? I'm the person who hates the cold, and I was fine with a sweatshirt yesterday. I would've said a 1.5 because I was fine (except for my fingers, but that's a given in anything below 70).

Congrats, akpete!

Were you out and about while the wind was really whipping? It had to have been below 20 degrees easily with wind chill factored in when I left the testing center around 5 pm. I had my "between seasons" coat on and was freezing my heiny.

holy crap that dog jumped over a car!

Yeah, I was. I was our in the middle of the dau and at night. Wearing my sweatshirt and gloves each time. Granted I didn't go running or anything, but to the eye center from far away in the parking lot and similar distances a few times

As for my retina with the hypopigmentation -- they think it's from when I got punched in the face for being white way back in high school.

Are the specialty interest groups the only, or should I say best way to set up shadowing? In terms of the AIG, I want to shadow a CCM specialized gas doc. Possible? Crazy? What are your thoughts?
