Hello.

My husband (26, former military), will be starting medical school next week. He gambles, quite regularly. I am concerned due to the higher moral and ethical standards that it takes to get into, and maintain a medical degree. Would this ever become an issue, and give his school reason for him to get kicked out?

I have heard different opinions, but cannot find much literature. Thank you.

depends on if it affects his ability to perform his duty and what is required.

Also, how many knows about it too.....

If he can do it and maintain normal and no ill effects then I say it will be no problem.

Sort of like the dont ask, dont tell policy that was in place in the military.

Be hush and do what you do and no one will be the wiser.

If iit's not illegal gambling, then it should not be of anyone else's concern. I'd argue it shouldn't be, anyway, but whatev.

Regular gambling tells me an addictive inclination, though may not be as well. Cigarette, gambling, eating disorder, sex, work.. all may turn to an addiction. The point is that, in time how far one can go in it?
To read about addictions may be useful.

OH NOES! I gamble and I'm in Med School! Don't tell the admins! I play Texas Hold'Em and blackjack at the casino. And several of my classmates do the same ****. I don't understand what the problem is. It's not illegal and it's 2500000 miles away from "ethics" to even bring up that discussion.

Professional gambler?
I would say , if he wins, no problem.
If he loses, then he needs to get treated if it affects his life.
As for morality. Doubt anyone will really care.

I went to med school with a couple friends that were gamblers. Initially they started out by gambling on the weekends but then they got more and more involved with black jack. By the 2nd semester, one of them quit med school due to blowing most of his loan check (plus extra $ his wife sent him) on gambling. The other one stuck it out an extra semester until he had nothing left (including failing classes) and eventually he quit.

So yeah gambling and med school don't make a good mix.

As long as it's not getting in the way of his studying (studying comes first), finances of medical school (do not use loans to gamble or "win back that last one"), and keeps it legal (don't have blackjack parties and win your classmate's loan money) then gambling is OK. Just limit it because it's obviously addicting with all those gamblers anonymous groups.

I know more than one med. student that got into trouble this way. Med. students should avoid gambling, ******, cheap alcohol, etc... Too many have wasted their careers that way.
