I am a 4th year who will be applying ENT. I come from a relatively new medical school without an Otolaryngology program. As a result I am doing two aways during august and september to try and get my name out there and to acquire some letters from some academic Otolaryngologists. I was hoping to send out my application on September 15th, but I will still be halfway through my second away rotation (which is at the more well known of the two programs I will be at).

I will have a very strong letter from an ENT in town who is the Head and Neck cancer specialist for the region, and I will probably be able to get another letter in from my first away rotation before the 15th of september. I also have some other physicians from other specialties who would likely write very strong letters if I needed them. I was just wondering what I should do about a letter from the stronger program.

I guess it boils down to this. Is it going to hurt me that I will not be able to get that letter out on the 15th and probably wont be able to get one finished from that program until around early october? Should I just send off my APP with two ENT letters (one from the H&N PP guy, and one from the first away) and one letter from another specialty and then add the last one. I am just unsure if it would be better to try and shoot for two letters from the first away to cover my bases, and then send off the last ENT letter if/when I get it as a supplement.

I also realize this is assuming that I do well enough on my aways to earn strong letters from the faculty, but all the same, I dont have much mentorship from ENT's that have been affiliated with residencies any time recently, so its hard to know what is the best course of action.

Thanks for any advice you have.
