Loma Linda class of 2013.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
its definitly more so a one time purchase as there are few books that cant also be used for 2nd year. to be honest though, many times our class notes are so thorough that you will have little need for books. in the end though they give you the living expenses and the books and supplies money in the same check so you can spend it how you want.

Another question: How much time is spent in labs each week? I know that class is 8-12 each day, but how many days have labs, and how long do they usually go?

This year MS1 students had labs/small groups 2-3 times each week. They were almost always in the afternoon and lasted from 2-3 hours. Friday afternoons were always free. I probably spent an average 6-8 hours a week in labs/small groups. Some weeks more, some weeks less.

I think your list is perfect. Personally i liked Road Map Anatomy much more than BRS Anatomy but I'm in the minority on that one. Also I'm not sure if your Histo book is to right one...just make sure it is written by Ross. One of your Neuro books should be by DeArmond. Your neuro teacher pulls pictures directly from there...like directly. i personally used the big costanzo more than the BRS one but i owned both too. other than that i think you are straight. They will try to convince you to buy Harrisons or Cecil's textbook of medicine but DON'T DO IT. Its free online and you won't use it much until ;rd and 4th year.

The histo book listed is written by Ross.
None of the neuro books listed are by DeArmond!
Is this the one we want?

If we should get two or more neuro books, which other(s) would you recommend.

Thanks again Doctajay!

for those who care, I have been told that the intention is to have the complex (or some of it) usable by the time we start classes. Though it looks pretty barren and unfinished in the webcam (http://www.llu.edu/centennial/complex/), it looks quite a bit more finished in person. In fact, the back (side facing san bernardino) has been completely landscaped with grass, shrubs and palm trees. Looks nearly done from that side. From the outside it looks as though most of the rooms are finished/nearly finished on the first few floors, but there doesn't appear to be any furniture yet. For what it is worth...

Hey everyone! I just got accepted off of the waitlist for LLU~really excited and so relieved to hear from the school!

XT777, thanks for the lender info post-it was really helpful.

Has anyone here checked out the LLU dorms? I am somewhat interested in them after hearing that they are setup just like apartments.

I heard they were going to "direct loans" (or something like that) now-does that mean we no longer need to give them lender info, and even if we did it already it wouldn't matter?

that would be correct. everything will come directly from the DOE now... so no more private lenders. not sure how i feel about that... on one hand it is nice being able to choose who your lender is, but Direct DOE loans do have lower interest rates, but not sure about the customer service (very impersonal and you never get to talk to a human being). the grad school i went to also only had DOE direct lending, so that is what i had to use there. oh well, as long as everything gets taken care of.

ps: but you still have to fill out MPNs for the DOE/LLU. keep in mind the graduate PLUS loan has more fees than the Staffords and it also has a higher interest rate.

hello? is anyone alive out there??? (((echo)))

"Taborkid" Is that a reference to PDX???

Seems like we have two choices for internet providers in Loma Linda. Time Warner or Verizon. Any one with experience have a preference?

Has anyone gotten their financial aid package yet? I was talking with a 4th year and he said no one had gotten anything yet (as of the a week ago) because they had changed the whole loans system to direct loans. Has anyone heard anything else about this?

Flyingtofu, perhaps also try calling the Financial Aid Office (909) 558-4509.

current students, how is my book list. Am I missing anything? Too much of anything?

thanks.
Awesome thank you for this list.

Just to help out my fellow future classmates, I did the work and found all the Amazon page links to older editions of all the books. I got all the books on this list for $285. I basically bought all older editions (by older I mean 2002-2007 editions of things) and bought them all used. Here are the links to all the pages:

These books I bought new from Amazon because I could not find older editions (or the older editions were either too old or not a big enough savings) and the used books offered did not offer at least a 5% discount on the price (arbitrary):

Atlas of Human Anatomy: With Netteranatomy.com (Netter Basic Science)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416033858/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0878930604/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Behavioral Medicine: A Guide for Clinical Practice
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071438602/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

These books I bought as older editions or they had used copies available that met my 5% discount requirement:

Clinically Oriented Anatomy (5th Edition)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781736390/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Immunology: A Short Course
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471226890/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374525641/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

The Lost Art of Healing: Practicing Compassion in Medicine
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345425979/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

The Brain Atlas: A Visual Guide to the Human Central Nervous System
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471430587/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Physiology: Board Review Series
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0683303961/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781767903/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Physiology (Saunders Text and Review Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0721695493/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781722659/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

First Aid for the USMLE Step 1: 2007
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071475311/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

BRS Gross Anatomy (Board Review Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781753090/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

High-Yield Embryology: A Collaborative Project of Medical Students and Faculty (High-Yield Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781768721/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

So, all in all, I got 15 books for $285 (shipping included), or $19 per book. That is a $350 savings over buying all new copies of the new editions of each book. Just thought I would share!

Hey, for any of you looking to save money, this is just my opinion of the books on the list (in bold):

Atlas of Human Anatomy: With Netteranatomy.com (Netter Basic Science)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1416033858/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Never bought Netter's, but I always liked looking through other student's copies. I may pick one up someday used; it's a good book but I didn't use it.

Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0878930604/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Good book, read through it a bit on my own. Used the book for neuroscience maybe a total of 1 hr study time though.

Behavioral Medicine: A Guide for Clinical Practice
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071438602/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Have it, never used it. May open before Step 1.

Clinically Oriented Anatomy (5th Edition)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781736390/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Did not buy, did not use.

Immunology: A Short Course
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471226890/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Have it, studied the review sections at the end of the chapters and looked at the pictures maybe a total of 2 hrs for immuno.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0374525641/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Did not buy, I think I wrote a paper on this at sometime but I didn't use the book lol.

The Lost Art of Healing: Practicing Compassion in Medicine
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345425979/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

did not buy, you can find a copy for the paper.

The Brain Atlas: A Visual Guide to the Human Central Nervous System
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471430587/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

There was a big book with pictures in it of brain slices that I never had and always wondered what it was.. lol. Probably this book, I didn't buy or use it.. it might be a good purchase though.

Physiology: Board Review Series
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0683303961/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Used for every module and before every exam. Read all of it probably 5-6 times throughout the year. A+++++

Histology: A Text and Atlas: With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781767903/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Bought it, used it. Good book, detailed histo explanations and slides. Definitely use the notes though as your main study material in histo, not Ross.

Physiology (Saunders Text and Review Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0721695493/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Didn't buy, didn't use.

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry (Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781722659/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Bought it, used it. good biochem book, if there can be such a thing. The biochem notes are terrible (not to disappoint lol) and though most questions come straight from the notes it's good to use Lippencott's to figure some more difficult stuff out.

First Aid for the USMLE Step 1: 2007
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071475311/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

great book, def. buy this at some point or other.

BRS Gross Anatomy (Board Review Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781753090/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

great book, used all the time for anatomy for the entire year (along with ppts).

High-Yield Embryology: A Collaborative Project of Medical Students and Faculty (High-Yield Series)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0781768721/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

I think I have this somewhere, I never used it though.

anyway just an honest description of what I used last year. All my books came as a package deal from an upper-classman so I ended up with a lot of stuff I didn't use. If you wanna save money don't spend a lot on books OR medical equipment. You're not even allowed to use the pan-optic ophthalmoscope on the OSCE.. jmo.

Books you should definetly buy for 1st yr.

Netters
BRS Phys
BRS Anatomy
High Yeild Cell
First Aid

Those are the only books I actually studied from 1st year. If you learn better from text books then buy more but I would wait a few weeks because the notes (and a little wikipedia) are usually enough.

And don't buy any of the books they tell you to buy for religion or for book reports. You can either find them online, get them from someone else, or just BS the book report based on what you think the book is about (I know this is graduate school but it works, they are after all just religion classes)

DO NOT BUY THE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, that is unless you just want to throw $800 away so you can be a 'cool' med student with 'cool' medical equipment. The only thing you should actually buy is the Stethoscope. Don't even buy the BP cuff when they try to sell it to you during orientation. They have all the equipment you need in the labs and if you want to practice at home enough people were suckered into buying this stuff you can practice with them or borrow it. Or find a 3rd or 4th yr student, I am sure there are plenty who would sell their equipment. The thing is you won't use any of this stuff after 2nd yr and it is really just a money making scheme by the school.

Thanks Cold Weather and VirgilCaine!

WOW. Thank you so much for this advice.

This is great advice!! Thanks folks, I'm looking forward to getting it started on Thursday!!! Wooo!! Class of 2013!!

Where are we supposed to go for orientation tomorrow? I can't seem to find the letter where all of the orientation information was stated...

I followed this advice and now I got a message on my cell phone from the PDX instructor saying it was REQUIRED that I buy the equipment and to go IMMEDIATELY to the dean's office to order my equipment. I have a stethoscope. Are you absolutely sure I do not need any of the other equipment?

That is the most ridiculous crap I have ever heard. Plenty of students my year did NOT buy the equipment (although I did because I wanted to do missions), and some of my classmates actually had siblings in the above classes and they just used the hand me down equipment. Don't let them strong hand you like that. If you already "have" the equipment, they can't legally force you to buy it. As long as you have the equipment that will be required for the year long PDX clinical skills lab then you will be fine. You need to have a face to face with them...or you can just do nothing and see how far they go in trying to force you to buy it. I doubt they can actually force you to charge your student account $800 for the materials.

Okay, so what do I absolutely "need" for the class besides a stethoscope?

the only things that aren't already in each of the pdx clinical skills rooms are:
1) reflex hammer (they might even have that depending on the room)
2) pan ophthalmoscope (they have one with the regular head)
3) Stethoscope

I may be forgetting one thing but probably not.

So I guess a better question is: what kinds of things will they try to sell me but I don't need?

They are making it pretty hard not to buy an entire kit of stuff (which starts at $806). I am disappointed.

hi. i'm posting on here to see if any of you know 4th years who are away for the month of september rotations (aug 31-sept 25th) and would want to rent out their apartment while they are gone. i'm going to be a visiting student from out of state doing an elective rotation. the housing that the realtor office offered seemed expensive so i'm looking for other options. i would need a furnished apt. i'm female, clean, responsible. send me a personal message if you have any leads! i dont know where else to turn! thanks!

I just had a long conversation with the PDX department. They insisted that all incoming freshman will be checked for the equipment and those that do not have ALL of the equipment will fail.

They explained that this year the rules were changed and the new policy is that each student must show the instructor that all the equipment has been purchased to receive a passing grade in the class, regardless of being able to use the equipment available in class.

its probably best to not post about faculty and staff on these forums. I know for a fact that people in the admissions office visit SDN, and from your posts so far, they could probably figure out who u are.

I think there are still ways for you to "get around" this new rule without buying the equipment but its better to discuss that via e-mail or PM.
