Hi there,

My Army recruiter sent me some information that indicates that Army dentists can be posted in Belgium, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Korea, among other international areas.

My questions:
1) Is it hard for an AEGD grad to get a position in one of these countries?

2) Typically, how many dentists are there in an overseas clinic? What's the largest clinic overseas?

3) How long is an assignment in one of these clinics?

Thank you!

I'm also curious who has the best chance out of a person straight out of school, after 1 yr aegd, or after 2 yr aegd? I know it also depends if there are any openings, but assuming there is.

There are not a lot of spots at most of those locations, and many people try for it. Due to the law of supply and demand it will be difficult to get stationed there, but not impossible. There is nothing that you can do to increase your chances of going there.

Assignments overseas are usually 3 yrs (can be as short as 2 yrs if you don't have a family that you take).

Some clincis are very small with just a few dentists, others can have quite a few (however, only a small number of them are rotating out when you are trying to go in, therefore the reference to supply and demand).

Outside of Europe and Asia there are only a few spots in Kuwait and Egypt - they are for 1 year at a time without your family...again not many spots. Deployments are tough to get. There are not many people being deployed. From our region we typically get many more volunteers than spots. You may have to throw your name in several times, and even then not get it. If draw down continues I see the chance of deployments going down as well.

How many Army dentists are in Japan? Any 63B or specialists?
