Have Harvard and Stanford actually invited? I am sure they have. Also, have any of heard from any other California schools (other than KP)?

Does any body have an idea of the number of applicants and total number of spaces. I heard ~175 applicants, but that seems low and I really don't think so.

the number of applicants in 2003 was 214, which was a bit higher than previous years. the applicant/position ratio was 2.0 in 2003. it peaked at 2.6 in 2001.

radoncadonk-
not sure if your stats are truly correct. when i applied in 2002, at nyu they received over 300 applications. There are many people who apply to radonc...medical students via eras and non-eras applications (sometimes programs except both forms), residents transferring from other fields (via paper applications), and IMG's via eras and paper applications. and the latter applicants arent usually included in 'official' statistics.

i know there was a study in the red journal a year back and i think i remember those stats were based on ERAS and NRMP data.

and i think a more impressive ratio to use is the number of interviewees to a spot. i remember they were between 20-35 interviewees to each spot. Think about IM...they interview 300-400 for 20-30 spots. a word of advice....go to as many interviews as you an...def do 15-18 if you get that many. its a competitive field.

I am interested in information on this year's stats. I recognize it is a competitive feild but can look up old data.

call up and ask programs if you want this years stats. why make someone else do you dirtywork. i could care less about this years stats, im already in training and was trying to shed some light on the subject.

I think that quite a reasonable question. I appreciate your input from previous years, but since the topic of the forum is "this years crop" I could see the topic becoming tangential. I have heard 175 people for 100 postions. I am only inquiring about what people from this year may have heard. Congrats on your spot and good luck in your career.

thanks for the adjustment radonc (i was in fact going by that paper in the red journal). i think you're absolutely right....the best measure is the interviewees/spot at one program if you're thinking about your chances of matching into a particular program. i didn't know it was that high (scary). i'm just a little MS4. for example, right now i believe mdacc has five spots and is interviewing 28 folks....somebody correct me if you know differently. but i'm sure all programs differ.

also, i think it's key to remember that while 20-35 /spot sounds intimidating, that is only a measure of the 'relative competition' and the not the 'absolute competition' for those spots, since obviously all of those folks are interviewing at many programs. so, if you're thinking about matching vs. not matching (and not one particular program), it seems to me that the total numbers of applicants/spots is a better assessment. what do you think?

nothing is more disconcerting that the applicants knowing the interview dates before the interviewers...

Any word on hopkins or MSKCC and if/when they'll be offering interviews. Also,
is it ok to tell a program that you are no longer interested in them? A reverse rejection of sorts...or is the field too small to burn bridges like that?

I don't see any advantage of rejecting them outright. If they offer you an interview, just respectfully decline, citing that you have interview conficts or the like.

I am not for certain whether they have extended invitations as of yet, but for planning purposes for those of you considering Hopkins for interview, the dates from the website are:

Friday, January 7, 2005; Saturday, January 8, 2005 and Monday, January 10, 2005. Alternative dates can be arranged if requested but not guaranteed.

Invitations should go out the week of November 29.
