Interview Offers

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AnnK, thanks for the info. It provides a little bit of a relief to hear that. I guess as long as they don't send a flat-out rejection letter/email, then there's still hope. Although, there were a couple places I remember 2 years ago that I never heard from...rejection or otherwise.

Invite to Wash U via email, although the email was addressed to a different name...did this happen to anyone else?

Hi Thaiger

would you mind posting dates?

thank you!

Don't know for the dates for MCW cuz didn't get an interview offer. Wash U dates are already posted by someone else I believe. They are 2 half-days Fri-Sat.

Don't worry about the name thing. My name isn't "Greg," either.

MCS dates are 12/15, 12/19, 1/5, 1/7

Hi all,

I have a theory. If you see information posted about a school, and then do not hear from them for 7 calendar days (which of course feels like 70), my theory is that this is bad news. So far this formula describes rejections I have received.

Agree, Disagree... ?

I would say that for the majority of programs that is probably true. But there are programs out there who might send out invites in batches. Also, it's also possible that you are in their "B" list and if other people decline interviews, they might offer you one. You can also call a program up or email them and ask them...don't think it would hurt.

doh! Joe, if your theory is true (for the majority of programs), then it's really bad news for me!

Exceptions: UNC (someone said a second batch is coming), Stanford (I heard literally a month ago, but they are not yet done going through all the applications).

I'll take B list, or C list. Just interview me!

Thaiger75, I'm hoping for the "batch" explantion, but the "B list" thing is exactly what I'm worried about. It might be a waste of time and money to interview at a place that already ranks you as 30th on their list. I'm thinking it might be smart to put programs lower on MY list if I don't hear from them when they send out initial interviews, because I now realize that it is physically impossible to interview at every program that I am interested in.

I can hear a lecture coming from someone.....

but before that, does anyone else want to comment on the formula?

Joe

Music710, the great thing about most theories is that they are wrong!

Yes, UNC should be sending out another batch (at least that's what the residents told me).

Jefferson is 12/15, 1/12, 1/29
Tufts is 1/10-- it will be the only date!

Just spewing my thoughts on my experience 1st time around and now this time around...

Most of what I'm going to write about doesn't really apply to top-dog programs (MDA, MSKCC, etc) or those applicants who are all-stars (5 red journal publications, or Cell publication, or saved lives in Zimbabwe)...

It seems alot of programs put alot of wgt on whether they think you are a serious candidate for their program. One story I heard from a guy who was virtually a shoe-in for MDA (he did alot of research there), and while interviewing at Emory, 1 person asked him if MDA likes him so much, then why would he even considering coming to Emory...almost liking blowing him off cuz they didn't think he was serious about Emory.

How they gauge how serious a candidate is varies from program to program I'm sure. A PD (my mentor) has even said to me that b/c it's so competitive now, he pretty much invites only regional candidates cuz he realizes that many people would have to spend alot of time and money to fly and interview there. Sometimes this translates into rejections by lower tier programs if you're from a powerhouse institutions cuz they don't you would go there. I got the feeling from 1 chairman that he wasn't too keen on people applying to everywhere in the country...which apparently shows that certain applicants weren't interested in his program. I think that some programs haven't gotten it in their heads how competitive it has become since it was not so for so long. We HAVE to apply to as many places as we need to (unless of course you're an ALL STAR candidate). *ahem* MD/PhD

It's disappointing that some programs may base their rank list not so much on who they like the most, but rather who they think is serious and really excited about coming there. That puts others at a disadvantage. Some applicants may aggressively lobby to stay within their own program (ie my family is here and I really want to stay here) and in the Rad Onc situation where alot of programs only have 1 spot, boom, you're out...even if you're ranked #2 or #3 in their list.

Sorry for the long ramble...any comments?

I totally agree with you, Thaiger.

I think it's a mistake for programs to rank applicants basing significantly on how they think applicants will rank them. In a sense, I think it's because program directors don't want to be "rejected" either -- by their top candidates. I guess if you have 1 spot in the program, and it takes you all the way down to #10 on the rank list to match a resident -- it feels kinda crappy. But pride aside, the only way programs can get the "best residents" is to rank applicants according to who the program considers to be "best candidates."

There is also an issue of "fit" -- maybe one argument is that programs want applicants who also want them -- thus a 2-way good fit of program with resident. But I'm no believer in this theory. I think many applicants would fit very well in many programs -- but how many programs can I rank #1? Just one program. I think many applicants would be just as happy (and fit very well) in #2, #3, #4... #7 programs.

If every program ranked applicants based on how they think applicants will rank them -- the result of this is a feeling that, at every interview, you need to prove to the programs that you want them (and only want them). There are certainly ethical concerns about this process.

gosh, I ramble too.

Exactly, I hear alot of pride when programs communicate with each other saying that, yeah, we got our #1 rank candidate, etc. Yeah, yeah, pat yourself on the back!

And yeah, I totally agree. A candidate can fit into many programs. Unless of course, you're gung-ho about academics and want to be a chairman someday and take over the world of Rad Onc, then going to a small program is probably not the best fit.

I had 1 chairman ask me, "Why do you think you didn't match?" . I was a bit taken by surprise. Kinda a ****ty question to ask. I think alot of this attitude stems from old-school thinking. At least for the older chairmen, PDs, they're not used to seeing applicants not matching. The younger faculty realize more the reality of the field. I know plenty of top quality applicants that did not match the 1st time around. Any others out there?

Also, when people say, oh yeah, I interviewed at 9 or 10 places, but when you look at it, it's not saying much. On average, you're really competing for 10 or 12 spots cuz each program will have 1 or 2 spots on avg.

hey Thaiger

do you know how many spots UNC is interviewing for this year?

University of Utah, notified by e-mail. Dates are 12/16, 1/6, 1/13.

So would it be bad form to show up with a broken leg from skiing the previous day? Guess I should just admire the mountains from afar...:)

Second round, "B list", whatever you want to call it. U Penn emailed today offering 12/5 and 12/12

I emailed UCSF. They are going to offer 12/15, 1/13, 1/27, and another date yet to be determined sometime next week.

Have they sent out all their invitations (and rejections) yet?

Sorry Thaiger75, when I wrote "going to" I meant "are planning to", and they are planning to send out offers next week. None have yet been sent, the dates have not fully been decided on, all is well.:)

hey Joe

#29 MCS is probably a typo.. I think it's supposed to be MCW (W is just 1 key up from S). the dates listed are those for MCW.

here's another one (by e-mail): Cincinnati, 12/1, 12/8, 1/12, 1/26

Looks like harvard sent out another set of interview offers today by email. Same dates as listed in a prior post.

#34. University of Kentucky

Came by pager of all things. They only mentioned 12/6 as an option (less than 2 week notice). Better late than never, I guess....

Hi Steph

do you know when Hopkins will be offering interviews? (or has it already?)... # of interviews that will be offered and # of positions open this year? (if it's information you cannot share, that's okay...)

thanks!

See the list your colleages posted above; there will be (likely) two days with a potential third day for very strong candidates who can't make it those two days.
The letters havent gone out yet and will , and I quote, "When everyone has reviewed all the candidates". I think there are 2 positions but I may be wrong about that; They are aiming to interview 20-30 people. Sorry the info is so soft but that's where in stands as of late last week. Good luck.
