I'm getting emails about membership for AMA, AAPM&R, AAP. I'm a starting PGY1 at the moment and am not sure which, if any, organizations are important for the time being. What about next year?

Aapm&r is probably the most useful in general. Resident membership is cheap, but I'd wait to see if your program covers your membership. I couldn't give a nickel to AMA.

many organizations are free to residents.

you can join them all and see what they have to offer. your interests may change over time but it's good to know what meetings are available to you. SIS, ASIPP, AAPM, APS are pain oriented and are likely all free to residents. there are sports medicine groups as well
