Hey idoc,

Thanks. So, the info i got about yale is from a former resident there (currently a fellow here) and an attending here who trained there. They both said if you were to split ophtho programs into three levels, yale would be near the top of the middle level. They take 4 res. per year. Generally three of the four residents go on to do fellowships (historically 1 in plastics, 1 in retina, and 1 in either cornea or something academic, and 1 does general ophtho).

Residents average about 75 cataracts...in terms of procedures, they said it's low to middle of the road, but some get as many as 130 if they are aggressive.

While they have all the ophtho fields covered, all the depts. are not huge...i.e.--they just got a full-time plastics faculty, and they only have a few clinics in uveitis and neuro-ophtho per week. The other depts. are quite strong, and there is a good amount of research available in both clinical and basic science.

The real strength of the program is that there is a lot of comaraderie among residents and faculty, the ancillary staff is wonderful, and people there are generally very happy, despite being in new haven.

The teaching is supposed to be quite good, but it is not a "hand holding" program.

That's about all i know...hope it helps some...pls. keep in mind this info is only from speaking to a couple of peeps, so it could be biased.

Last thing, from what they could remember (from when they were there), they said yale typically gets about 400 or so applicants from which they interview about 60-75 peeps.

Dang...I haven't heard anything from Baylor, no rejection, no interview, not even the famed group email. Wonder what's going on....

Rejected by Boston University today. Anyone know how competetive this program is? For some reason I was thinking they were one of the lesser competetive programs in Boston.

LSU Shreveport by snail mail
Virginia Commonwealth by phone
UT - San Antonio by phone
Duke by email
U Rochester by phone
Emory by email
Tulane by email

I got the "axe" by W Virginia and BU as well. I wonder if W Virginia is looking for local people.

Has anyone even received a confirmation sheet from Wilmer that they received their application from CAS?

I have received confirmations from almost all the other programs I applied to, but not Wilmer.

Hey rice,
If you got the same letter that I got, it said they were only interviewing 20 people for their program this year. That makes me pretty suspicious that they already know who they want, most likely students from WVU, or research backdoor people. That is not a slam, it just is my opinion. Most programs wouldn't have the cahones to only interview 20, since it would mean they would risk going unmatched. I think WVU is actually a good program, but I guess I'll never get the chance to check it out for myself. Oh well.

Ten:One isn't necessarily the rule for applicant:resident ratios. For example, last year Tulane interviewed 300 people for 6 spots, about 50:1 As listed on FREIDA-maybe they slipped in an extra zero on accident. Even so many programs interviewed close to a hundred for 3-4 spots.

I doubt Tulane interviewed 300. This must be an error.

Hey y'all, this board would be much easier to keep track of if we all just had one list per user and edited that list as new offers have come in--much like the people on the first page of this thread have done. Otherwise this thing will end up 30 pages long. If you have your list scattered throughout the board you can compile it into one list and delete the individual posts.

Just a thought.

I use this post to keep track of who is inviting and who has sent regrets. Can we be sure to keep the new invites new, as redhawk has suggested? If others feel like updating their lists, that's cool.

I think its a good idea to keep the new ones new . . .maybe just go back after a week or so and delete and add to a big list. I'm not trying to be anal about this, just like to keep things tidy.

today:

U Missouri - Kansas City (regular mail)
Texas A&M / Scott & White (phone)

if you like midwest schools, these invites are out:

U Cincinnati (regular mail)
U Missouri - Columbia (email)

Wake Forest interview invite by paper mail yesterday.

Has anyone heard from Georgetown, Columbia, or Mass Eye & Ear?

Also, my commentary on posting program interview invites... I know that people are trying to keep this thread from becoming too long, but I encourage people to post new program invites (that have not been listed previously) as new posts. That way, we can all just scroll down to the bottom of the last page on this thread to see the latest invites. If people just edit their previous posts, then we don't know which posts to look at for updates.

my 2 cents...

Hey everyone; I have not posted for a while; so far this week:

UC Davis- e-mail
USC- phone
U Cincinnati- snail mail
U Arizona- e-mail
