Some information that I haven't seen posted here before:
You can get your H1B visa right after med school if you graduate from a US med school. You don't even need to take Step 3. It is very difficult to find a lawyer who knows what he/she is doing though. If you are interested PM me and I will give you the information of the one I used.
The benefit of doing this is forgoing the hassle of having to switch your visa status from F-1 to OPT to H-1. You can just switch once and not deal with it again. Or if, like myself, you apply for OPT too late. (Apply by march!)
The benefit of going to OPT is that you get an extra year of possible residency training. The H-1 is valid for 6 years. If you plan on specializing and might be in residency longer than that, you will have a total 7 years. Also, you have an entire year to get your visa situation straight during internship.
