GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! What are your top choices?
Thank you! I am pretty sure I will be going with TJU. I have not 100% decided yet though. I still have a lot to hear back from, but my interview experience with Thomas Jefferson was so positive! They provided a very welcoming environment and all of the research opportunities kind of sold me.

Based on past threads, I think that Sacred Heart conducts interviews well into March. At least I hope so, because I haven't heard from them either.
I have also not heard back from Sacred Heart and I applied in early Oct.

There's a forum specifically for Emory & Henry that I made about a week ago and some one replied with a little info about the interview! I had my interview this passed weekend and found out yesterday that I was accepted! It's very relaxed and everyone is super nice Good luck!
Awesome! Thanks so much. Congrats, that is so exciting!

If there are any current Emory and Henry MOT students on this forum, what is the weekly schedule of the OT student? Like an overlook of classes each day?

Does it look bad to email schools that you're waiting to hear from and inquire about your status?

For those of you who are planning to relocate or their programs... how are you going about doing this? are you taking out personal loans, savings, credit cards? I am wondering what my options are and how do I go about approaching landlords as an unemployed grad student haha.

I don't know your personal situation, but my husband relocated for medical school and my mother-in-law had to co-sign the lease as our financial guarantor. That basically means she committed to cover our expenses if we were to not pay. Our landlords required you to have a certain amount of money and his loans didn't suffice so that is what we did. If you live near a college I'm sure they will be willing to work with you as they know many students rely on loans while in school!

Interviewed at Stonybrook University Nov 18th, still haven't heard back :/
Interviewed at NYIT in early January, got accepted :)
Got an interview at LIU Brooklyn but I declined because I know I would choose NYIT over them.
Still waiting to hear back from Hofstra University, Touro College Bayshore, and York College. I've heard Touro and York are both kind of tough to hear back from.

Has anyone heard from these?

Oh wow, many of you have fantastic stats. Never thought I'd get in anywhere with mine:

University: Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)
Major: Illustration (concentration on scientific/medical illustration)
Minor: Biology (and technically psychology, but wasn't recognized)
Undergrad GPA: 3.0
Overall GPA: 3.2
Pre-req GPA: 3.6-3.8, depending on program requirements
GRE: Verbal 143, Quantitative 143, Writing 3.0

Past Experience: During high school I worked at an inner city children's summer camp, and that's it.

Current Experience: 2 years at a hand therapy clinic. I train volunteers to become aides.

OT hours: 2,500+ for hand therapy, 8 at a SNF

Applied: Virginia Commonwealth University, Creighton (Regis Pathway in Denver), Shenandoah, Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Bay Path, D'Youville, Loma Linda, Brenau, Belmont, Midwestern (AZ), A.T. Still (applied to both their MSOT and OTD), West Coast University, Chatham, Sacred Heart, Abilene Christian University, and I think one more...can't remember!

Interviews: Midwestern (declined), A.T. Still (declined), Brenau (declined), West Coast (declined), Loma Linda, Creighton-Regis (attending 3/24), Jefferson College of Health Sciences (attending this week)

Wait listed: None

Acceptances: Shenandoah (NOVA Leesburg campus)

Rejections: Virginia Commonwealth University, Loma Linda, Belmont, Chatham, Abilene Christian

VCU's rejection felt like a stab in the heart. Unless you are one of their guaranteed admit applicants, there's a slimmer chance they'll accept their own alumni. I wanted to go there again so bad, but I also realize that program is ridiculously competitive.

I would just recommend observing in as many settings as possible. Even if you only do say 40 hours in a place, I've found that having many different settings to discuss during interviews has really helped me! Sounds like you're doing that so far, but maybe observe at a sensory gym as well so you can see a pediatric setting.
Also your work experience is impressive so make sure you emphasize it in your personal statement! That'll stand out over your grades.
Good luck!

Thank you very much for the reply. I will continue to get as many different observation settings as I can. I hope that is enough to get me in somewhere. I'm willing to relocate to just about anywhere.

Hey everyone,

I've been reading this thread so I decided to chime in. I applied this cycle for the first time and I must say it has been nerve wrecking! I fall in the "low GPA" category but now seeing that there is hope out there, I sleep a little better at night knowing I have a chance. Looking back I wish I would have improved my personal statement but for now we'll see. I plan on only applying to schools in So Cal because I plan on commuting. Schools are so impacted!!! Anyway, congrats to those that have been accepted and good luck to those still waiting. Here are my stats..

Undergrade: California State University of Los Angles
Major: Spanish Minor: Art
Overall GPA: 3.21 (rough freshman/sophomore yr)
Pre-req GPA: 3.95
GRE: 150 Q, 147 V, 4.0 AW (not that great)

Experience: OT observation 260 hrs peds, 40 hrs SNF, 70+ volunteer hrs at various organizations
1 year OT interpreter/aide, 2.5 yrs personal trainer, 2.5 yrs behavior specialist, 1.5 yrs substitute teacher
Some certifications: CPI, LCI, NCSF, TRX, CPR/AED, 30 day sub permit
I was also a patient of a hand OT for about 1.5 years (how I came across OT)

Acceptances: Still waiting :(
Waitlist: LLU
Rejections: CSUDH, West Coast
Applied: LLU, CSUDH, West Coast, Stanbridge

Congrats on acceptance to Thomas Jefferson!! Just curious, but what was your first step in becoming a behavior interventionist? If I don't get into ot school this round, I would love to do that for ABA for a year before I apply again. Thanks!

Howard - email, i missed something in my application ):
Ugh I''m so sorry, that's such a silly reason. I'm waiting to hear from: Howard, Temple, Colorado State, Towson, Med U of South Carolina, Lenoir Rhyne, and I'm on the wait list at UNE. Have heard rejections from TJU, East Carolina, and U of the Sciences. My app was submitted and verified Oct 20 so hopefully i'll be hearing soon!

Was just emailed that I was put on the waitlist for an interview for TJU, they said they'd email me as soon as an interview opened up, does anyone know if that mean their program is filled? I submitted my application on 1/24 :arghh:

Hey, yeah definitely look into it. It was the closest way for me to get experience with a peds population with disabilities on my own. I kind of just look up different ABA companies around me, they're in high demand in my area. Good luck!

Thanks, you as well! I interviewed the first session in November, and found out the next week I was denied. I was waitlisted last year and having been here for so long, I knew I didn't want to attend, so I'm glad I found out early.

Woah, you were a hand therapy patient for 1.5 years??? May I ask what happened to you?

Like mine, your overall GPA seems to be on the lower side, but it looks like you have a lot going for you in the qualitative department due to experiences. If you can't get in this time, I would definitely look into more schools for the next cycle (like 10+). You may need to be open to moving out of state as well.

Best of luck!

I had trigger finger and then had the release done. I waited too long to have the surgery though and some damage occurred in the proximal joint. I had a second surgery which did not do much because know my finger is permanently bent from all the scar tissue. I had OT after both surgerys. It was a painfully cool experience lol

I want to apply out of state. As a matter of fact, my contingency was to apply after this cycle if I don't get in but we'll see. I'd have to sacrifice a lot for that.
Which schools have you applied to?

ugh so jealous you get to stay in IL :(

I wish I could as well! Rejected to UIC though and that was the only school I applied to in IL
I got my undergrad from Uic and played softball for the school. I was a pretty pivotal player and did a lot for the university as well as decent academic stats. Just sucks. Uic is my home. I came out at Uic and my classmates and my teammate were my support system and family when my family turned me awY

Haven't heard anything from Hofstra either. Congrats on the acceptance at NYIT though would you mind sharing your stats please? :)

I just want to say i share your feelings of being worried! My stats aren't too great either and it's hard seeing everyone's great stats on here, i just wanted to say lets not both get too discouraged ..something will work out for us :)

Based on past threads, I think that Sacred Heart conducts interviews well into March. At least I hope so, because I haven't heard from them either.
Well, I hope so too, because I haven't heard anything from them. Let's hope I get an interview invite from them, otherwise it's not looking good for me this year and this is my second time applying..

Anyone here apply to Wayne State in Detroit, MI? I got an email saying we will hear back in March.
