Forget how much to retire, WHERE to retire

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Don’t doubt it sevo…. Your practice is one I think we all genuinely admire… Reno seems great too… I’d be calling you in a heartbeat if the hubby could find a job up there
No job is perfect, but extremely proud of our group- past, present and future.

It’s the whole package though. Taxes, location, access, culture, outdoors, sun… just perfect for what we need in our lives.
Few weeks ago at dinner, wife said she bought smashing pumpkin world tour tickets. They will be playing 15 minutes from our house. 🙌🏽

There is rumor of a one billion dollar entertainment district along with a new arena at one of our local Casino’s.

And then there is burning man… People come from all over the world to experience it. This year will be number 8 for us.

Amazon, apple, tesla…. just some of the big tech in town.

It’s an up and coming place, but the bones are already here.

I thought Reno would have been a cool place to practice, but one of the Reno private practice ortho groups is/was anti DO when I was on the interview trail. The secretary emailed me and said that I couldn't be hired because I had to be board certified by the MD board only (my DO board certificate wasn't accepted.. Lol). 🙄

And this is just scrapping the surface. This past weekend we were poolside all day Saturday and Sunday... and yesterday after work. It was 84 at my house on Saturday, but all the mountains are still snow capped- bluebird weekend. Can literally ski, mountain bike, moto, kite surf, and boat all on the same day. Heading out first thing tomorrow post 3rd call to fly into San Jose. 45 minute flight to SJ then hitting up Santa Cruz for the day. Dinner back in the bay area with my elderly folks. Direct flights to Vegas (caught U2 at the sphere a few months ago then TOOL a few weeks later), SF, Phoenix, San Diego, Dallas, LA, Seattle, Portland... just to name a few. We don't have the foodie scene like LA, SF, or Vegas, but we have enough of it (indian, thai, greek, expensive steak houses, more sushi restaurants than you could ever want, etc). Summers here are so good. There is some sort of festival going on just about every weekend. Summers start early and end late. Something to do every season.
One thing we have in oversupply is the beauty of the eastern Sierras (bonus- we are a dry climate so NO BUGS).

Live where others vacation... it's been said on this forum ever since I joined here 20 years ago.

I don't know Reno directly but sorta know the terrain as I worked in Grass Valley for some time. Very pretty and optimal climate. Having lived in LA (Santa Monica) and Sac/surrounding areas, I prefer northern CA for various reasons. LA could be great if one had celebrity income/net worth.

That’s ridiculous. Sorry. We all know that MD' and DO's exist in both great and not so great permutations.

Ever been to the OC? :)

San Clemente. One of the few remaining beach towns in CA. We bought as vacation home in 2010 during the foreclosure fiasco. Now it is retirement home.

Great buy. San Clemente is as expensive as LA.

Pretty sure the anesthesia group in Missoula is the same way. Not a single DO on the roster.

Wow. Are these DOs trained at MD residencies or DO residencies? I had no idea there was prejudice. Many years ago there was as the DO residency standards weren’t the same but I though that had changed?

I worked in Anaheim (?I think OC) for about a year (had a horrible commute from Santa Monica, prior to med-school). Also been to Orange and La Jolla, All very nice, and CA in general is a beautiful state to live in. My own personal preference is Northern CA, something about the climate/terrain that is more appealing to me...With this said, if I had to pick between SF versus LA, I might go with LA.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Just spent the last 3 days in SF and the Bay area and couldn’t wait to get back home.
I can’t convince my near 80 y/o patents to move… they “love” to volunteer at the Ballet and Opera. They love to walk their dogs at Stanford for some crazy reason.

So true. My wife loves SF/Bay area, me not so much.

Snooty! Screw them.

I think that’s the issue. Every DO anesthesiologist I know trained at MD residencies and took the ABA boards, not the AOBA boards. Two separate pathways, one is more widely accepted than the other.

You have people in your group doing a combo of anesthesia and pain or is it all general anesthesia?

Few pics from today. Biking and BBQ season is open.

If in the US, pick a nice progressive bubble where the police protect it like the Green Zone with quick egress to an airport. Best restaurants and nightlife in the world with all the lifestyle of guilt free urban living.

To each their own.

I have to drive past Trump 2024 signs on my way home, but even that's preferable to anything I'd drive past in a city. :)

Except the restaurants.

City dwellers going on about restaurants are like New Yorkers honking on mightily about the pleasures of spring. :)
As a former New Yorker.... I remember every beautiful Spring. Most of them were on a Tuesday. P.S. I love the Doug Adams books. :)

If you are a foodie...big cities are better. If you are not...your loss.

I have to say, as I’ve aged in a city, I keep thinking the food is less and less important. We’re moving to a very expensive suburb with our twins, and I see it as almost exclusively positive. But then we had a burrito. It was even at the Mexican place with the good reviews and Latino employees. Wow, was it terrible. There may really be something about the food in a real city.

Santa Barbara. That's where I'll be heading in retirement
Great choice. Could also choose Coronado if you prefer a flatter place to live and a large city across the bridge.

But let's not stop at those 8 months. Throw in a second place for 4 months at a world class ski resort town, a good handful to choose from, as long as it's not too close to a big city like Denver with the resulting lift lines.

Have spent decades around major cities. Most have gotten less desirable for me and are not where I want to retire. Don't care for the congestion, current political climate, and crime that most of those cities offer.

None of this s*** sounds appealing at all. California is an absolute wasteland that I have zero desire to go to and Colorado sucks as well zero chance I retire there. I am retiring in the state I've grown up with my whole life and I will die here and that is Tennessee and no I don't want you to come from your s******* City and s******* state fleeing high taxes and terrible government to come mess up my state. So please by all means go retire to California cuz I don't want you anyways.

Sorry. Reparations must be paid and as a rich Doctor it’s your job. Go to Cali now.

I agree with you on California for over 99% of the state. Santa Barbara and Coronado are that rare less than 1% of California I'd find a way to suffer through California nonsense.

TN is an excellent choice as is Texas and Florida. All 3 states have areas with very low populations as well as cities with millions of people. My preference is for mid sized cities which offer amenities without the crowds.

The locals call Coronado “Klantee by the Sea”. That said, one of my partners pimps out his house there for 50-60k/month during peak summer season.

In medical school my friends and I would put on our shorts and head to Central Park to toss around a frisbee when the temperature hit a balmy 50.
