Fecal transplants for C. diff seem to be gaining some traction. A new trial in NEJM reports remarkable success:

News article covering some background:

NYT article from yesterday:

There have also been recent reports of success with a synthetic poop to get the job done, which suggests patentability potential. Here's one:

Anyone have any experience with this procedure?

And on a slightly related note, any experience using porcine whipworms for IBD?

I wonder if this may one day be used to treat difficult cases of IBS. If IBS is due to an imbalance of bacteria in the intestinal flora perhaps this can help.

Interesting article from yesterday's NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/03/m...s-joints.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&smid=fb-share

Discusses gut connection to juvenile arthritis and mentions that increasing attention is being paid to the role the gut microbiome plays in disease. Fecal transplants are mentioned.

It seems reasonable that we'll be seeing more use of microbiome-related treatments in the future. Is anyone seeing any trend toward this in practice?

Yeah, soon we will be prescribing "crapsules" :p
