Fall 2012 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi All,
For the very first time I have decided to put my best foot forward on SDN. I have always been a staunch supporter & follower of SDN.
I have applied for the MHA program for fall 2012. I did apply quite in advance to stand a chance of at least my application being reviewed. Well you all might be wondering why so, it was because being an international student my GRE scores were very low (lower than the eligible mark) Already I had spent one whole year doing my homework on what next and after deciding further one year on MHA and its associates. So planned well for MHA fall 2012, and started my application way back in September 2011 as soon as SOPHAS was open.

Regarding my GRE, yes this was one part of my application I had a real problem . I am a dentist from India, so except for counting (particularly addition) the money notes, I am dangerously bad with math and as for as verbal is concerned GRE verbal SUCKS big time (the old version). So I just gave my GRE once and moved on with those score. I really dont understand how GRE will judge my calibre as doctor...

My other stats are as follows :
TOEFL - 97
GPA ( as per WES evaluation) - 3.64
2 years + work experience (and presently working )
8 months of research assistant experience
A paper I presented at a state level conference and was awarded as one of the best paper (from over 165 entries)
The above said paper in the process of publication.
A few(4) recognition awards for my services in dental public health.
Certificate in Tobacco Cessation (T.I.I. Specialist)
Active participation in voluantry and charitable activities
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP
1. Indian Dental Association(IDA)
2. Tobacco Intervention Initiative (TII)

With this I applied to as many as 12 universities in US for the MHA program. The universities include:
1. Uni of North Carolina (M.H.A)
2. Uni of Alabama(M.S.H.A)
3.Virginia Common Wealth Uni (M.H.A)

4. Uni of Washington (M.H.A)
5.St.Louis Uni (M.H.A)
6.Ohio state Uni (M.H.A)

7 Tulane Uni(M.H.A)
8.Texas A&M Uni health science center (M.H.A)
9.Uni of Kansas medical center (M.H.S.A)
10. Uni of Oklahoma (M.H.A)
11. Uni of South Carolina (M.H.A)
12. Drexel Uni (M.P.H. in HPM)
Also planning to apply for Uni of texas at Brownsville for personal reasons.
Well so many application is only because of my low GRE score.
Already two rejections, i.e., UNC and Tulane
Texas A&M phone interview on March 5th..............

All comments and suggestions entertained............

I went on-site for mine, though you do have the option to phone interview instead.
OK. So how long it took and what all did they ask you? n what was the time gap between interview and selection notification?

hi
I'm also an indian dentist and applied for MHA in UW?Did u hear anything from them?Plz reply....

Hey i have a interview with the MHA program and MUSC this week and i am not sure what is going be like.
Has anybody interviewed with them that could remember what type of questions they asked and anything unique about the interview?

Hi,

First post here.

Need some advice, please. I am on the Waiting List at VCU (not expecting to clear, I just don't see it very likely that many people not going there). I got accepted to Cornell and the Sloan program and Georgetown. I didn't go to my Rush interview because I decided, geographically, I wasn't interested in living in the midwest. I am from Virginia. Cost-wise, VCU is by far my first choice.

I am uncertain about a fellowship route or a consulting route. I have been told Cornell has great consulting connections and Georgetown has a good blend. I was told when I was there that they "have an excellent batting average for fellowships". One of their students just got a fellowship at Northwestern University Health System when I was there.

In the end, I am just torn about geographic placement. All the interaction I have had with the Sloan program was superb. As was with Georgetown but Georgetown is extremely expensive with minimal opportunities to make money while you attend. Cornell gives you the summer to make money and possibly externships during winter breaks.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there,
I got accepted into Cornell too and my main concern with the program is the tuition rate and funding availability. Apparently the job prospects after graduation from the program this year (class of 2012) is not as good as last year - partially due to the economy. If I were to commit to the Sloan program then I would be attending as an international student (Canadian) so I would have to shell out more $. I'm torn between going with Cornell and staying in good old Canada....

Also I'm not sure if the Cornell internship is paid...

Has anyone heard from Minnesota mha?

I have an interview with them on April 10th but I'm thinking of withdrawing from it because I don't really want to go to Minnesota - geographical location not the best and it'll be high cost ...

Hey everyone!

I'm starting to get my admission letters back from schools and I had a couple of questions:

1. Does anyone have an idea on the academic strength of the MHA program at Indiana University in Indianapolis?

2. Also, does anyone have an opinion on the MHA program at Indiana University vs the MHA program at the University of Missouri?

3. Also what are your thoughts on the MHA Degree at the Medical University of South Carolina in comparison to the other two schools?

Thanks!

hello veggie. As i saw your opinion regarding this buddy, confused about stayin in Canada, can u explain it more?. because i am going through same dilemma.I am Indian student,so cost of education, future job prospects, permanent residency matters a lot to me.I would Love to attend USC MHA but its too expensive, almost $1,00,000 and no aid ofcourse, problems in getting Green Card and downhill US economy. On the Other hand,i can go to Canadian MHA,with CAD 60,000,easy permanent residency.I guess you are an American,so i would really appreciate your view on this, particularly on job scenario.

Can you give me a bit of the entire process details....???? please dont mind...I am completely panicked.....Love to get into texas a&m...so I am asking you......
Thank you.....

Hi Ameya4,

It is my pleasure to help you. Even I am originally from India. But now in Texas. You can shoot as many questions as u want. :)

I had interview in-person and they said that I will receive a letter stating that "Congratulations! now u r part of our school and ....." Hence I know I have got selected. But as currently u r in India, it might take couple of days for them to send you a letter. You can get in touch with program coordinator and ask about your status. Moreover, have you applied to any other schools? Write to them that you are awaiting the decision.. show them that you are v interested in joining this school..

I hope this helps.

Hey thanks a ton dude...it was definitely helpful.....
As you said I had mailed the program co-ordinator on this issue in the first week of April and she put it across the grad admission office ..so according to that...there she told me to wait for a week or so....i sould have heard by now.....
So, I feel a bit awkward to again mail them on the same issue...I guess I will wait till May 1st and then go ahead with the clarification...So which all schools did u apply? where all did you get admits and rejects?
By the way congrats on your admit to Texas A& M....

I had just applied in A&M, Texas Women's University and UT. but in UT the course was MPH in healthcare management . and current students told me that if there is any job opening for administration or management profile, they prefer MHA students to that of MPH. So I was just interested in A&M and TWU. And I am selected in both of them. But I m definitely opting for A&M as it is v reputed school . it ranks 2nd best uni. of Texas.. and is among 10 top schools offering MHA course..

Texas A&M Uni.:luck:
"The MHA program is ranked as one of the top healthcare management programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and is one of ten demonstration sites for the National Center for Healthcare Leadership."
http://srph.tamhsc.edu/health-policy-mgmt/master-of-health-administration/index.html

If the website is using the US News as the source, since when a #39 ranking considered "top"? I'm not saying A&M has a poor program, but I wouldn't call it a top healthcare management program if we are using US News as our gauge.

Agreed, A&M is likely an excellent program, however it is not considered a top program within US News. I get that it is an excellent school, especially regionally, but I do agree with RAMPA on this one. If you are going by the rankings, it is likely not a top program. There is an argument to be made regarding the rankings though, as they are only perceptions of the quality of program. Hence, if someone perceives UPenn to be a great school then they might willing to overlook certain discrepencies within their program.

"All the health rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. "

According to US News, does Texas A&M have the top ranked health administration program in the United States? Nope.

Are rankings important? Debatable and subjective. From past experiences, US News mean little if you work hard and take advantage of all your school's opportunities.

Congratulations on your acceptance, cheers.

Hey after a long time.....So, how are things going on?
Did you receive your admit letter or mail from Texas A&M?
For me they are coming up with stories of not suppose to discuss the admission decision through emails...but have sent the decision letter to my current mailing address. As you know the on line status on the BAMF also tell the same.....so my bad luck continues to persist......
All the best to you......looking forward for your reply........
thank you in advance.......
