Army OMF surgeons (or any other army specialists): I have been researching the differences between ENT and OMFS specialties.... it seems that the scope of what an ENT can do is, in a large part, broader that what an OMFS can do (obviously there are certain precedures involving the teeth and jaw which tend to be the province of OMFS, but it seems that ENT gets to handle more trauma, cancer, cosmetics, etc.) I realize that a CF fellowship after the OMFS residency would help to bridge the gap here a bit and expand the scope of procedures that OMFS can do... comments on this?

My real question is this: does the ARMY provide/allow for a CF fellowship post OMFS residency?

that would not be correct. ENT's don't do anything to the maxillofacial structures outside the nose and have no business doing anything related to jaws or teeth.

about the only things an ENT can do that an OMS cannot are related to ears.

I am not an expert in OMFS but here is what I can tell you:

- There is an OMFS fellowship available for OMFS Officers. OMS can apply for a fellowship of their choice in the civilian world and the Army will pay for it. There is a payback obligation if one decides to do the fellowship. The fellowship can be in pediatrics, cleft, TMJ, trauma, plastics ... almost anything.

- OMFS that I have observed have done - orthognathic surgeries (cosmetic), chin augmentation (cosmetic), liposuction under the chin (cosmetic), nose augmentation (cosmetic), septalplasty, external ears, malar implants, facial reconstruction following trauma (eye sockets, nose, mouth, etc...), and of course all the stuff in the mouth - resections, implants, wisdom teeth, etc...

ENT and OMFS are credentialed to do very similar things in military hospitals. They frequently alternate ER call for head/neck trauma/problems.
