Hello all orthopods/wannabees,

Just wanted to get some input from you. I think my dad is about ready mentally to have a TKA done, most of the less invasive modalities have been exhausted. My problem is that he lives in Hendersonville, NC (close to Asheville), while I am an ER doc in Iowa. I don't have any contacts in NC to ask: Who should I have him see? He has no PMH except for prior knee surgery 30+ y/a and a little HTN. Should be a fairly straight-forward case, but we all know some surgeons are better than others  . Not looking for James Andrews, just a real good surgeon with a good track record.
Thanks,
LonghornsJPS

Not sure how far your dad wants to go, but I know of 2 Joints guys at UNC that are pretty good. Chris Olcott is young faculty, but very good. He was in private practice for a while. Paul Lachiewicz is very good also. He is older and famous for his acetabular screws and DVT prophylaxis.

Wake Forest, which is in Winston-Salem has their own total joints wing of the hospital. They have quite the set-up there. They just lost a joints surgeon, but Doug Kilgus is still there. I don't know much about him.

You dad is probably closest to Charlotte. Carolinas Medical Center is there, and they are known to have a good overall program. I don't know who are the joints guys there, but I'd image that they have 2-3 total joint surgeons.

Even though primary total hip/knee arthroplasty for OA is pretty straightforward, I think that he is best off with a fellowship-trained total joint surgeon. Many community general orthopods do TKA/THA but I would want my father in the hands of someone who does only total joints and revisions.

Hope it goes well for him,

One of the best joint docs in the world is 2 hrs up the road from you at Duke. James Nunley MD. Google him and try to set a time to meet with him at his clinic. He is the best w/o question in NC, if not the world.

hendersonville to durham is a lot more than 2 hours... more like 4. charlote is about 2 hours from hendersonville.

my mom had both her knees done by dr william griffin at charlotte orthopedic specialists. she couldn't be happier.

I was under the impression that Nunley does more small joint arthroplasty and surgery--ankle, wrist, MTP/MCP, etc. I know that he is a leader in that area. Does he do a lot of large joint arthroplasty?

You are correct, he does focus a lot of his time on total. He did a Pantalar fusion on my a couple years ago, and was the best. He is hard to get on his good side, but MD to MD he was nice. He is a leader not only in NC but worldwide.

The previous poster stated that is is 4hrs away from Charlotte. I would rather drive 4hrs and have Nunley do it, then have some no name do it.

I could of went anyplace in the world to have my Pantalar, and I choose him for his work in this field. If he cannot do the work you are looking for, Duke had plenty of leaders; more so then CMC. I know both medical centers well, and Duke, UNC and Emory are the med centers of choice in the south.

Once you are opened up, you better be sure you are in good hands, not "ok" hands because of a litle extra travel time. I flew from NY at least 6 times for Nunley. Only my advice, but experience counts. I bleive a Pantalar fusion is very major, and to have one without a nonunion is even better.
