Bernie Sanders says he will cancel all student loan debt if he’s president, can he do it?

Most people on this thread came to ****post so why care about coherence of thought.

Personally I'd support UBI if it meant the complete evisceration of welfare and entitlement programs including SSI and Medicare. However it is human nature for people to want to keep "theirs"

is SSI, in theory, UBI? Obviously if we had UBI we would replace SS with it - at least I would think that was the goal.

Medicare is a different animal - if UBI was high enough to pay for health insurance, go for it, but can you imagine trying to buy health insurance when you are 86 years old? Without some sort of very specific guidelines (written by the government of course) no insurnace provicer will write you a policy,

It would never actually happen like that, the welfare machine won’t want to shrink

I get why college students are drawn to socialism. Many of them came of age during the housing crash so they experienced the worse of capitalism.

As I get older, I started to see the waste and inefficiency of our government. You have to realize that most politicians are just lawyers. They are good at giving speeches. But, what do lawyers know about healthcare? education? transportation? But yet, we elect them to make all of these big decisions for us.

Had they taken economics, they should understand that the economy goes in cycles. Whereas socialism will guarantee permanent poverty. I get they didn’t take 20th century world history.

"In 2010, the poorest 20% of U.S. households consumed on average of $57,049 of goods and services per household, while they reported an average of $11,034 in pre-tax money income."

Interesting info for you guys on reporting income vs consumption of goods and services. There's a reason why the poor in America live better lives then even the average person in Europe. We give out way too many handouts.

but we digress from the actual OP questions.
Can he? not unilaterally
Will he try? probably
Will he succeed?
a. if the GOP controls at least one house of congress? no
b. if the dems control both houses? probably not a straight wipe out of all student debt. Likely be some sort of change to the existing programs

Does it make sense to simply wipe out student debt and not change anything? no - we will just find ourselves in the same situation a few years down the road. We have to fix the underlying problem, in no particular order.
a. The cost of college is rising faster than inflation (similar to the housing bubble)
b. It doesn't make sense to give out huge student loans to someone who is going into a job that won't be able to afford to pay them back. Example - taking out 300k loans to go to Harvard to be a elementary school teacher (job is important but they will never be able to afford to pay the laons back)
c. Too many people go to college who have no reason to be there , they spend a year or two and then drop out, but have huge loans- college isn't for everyone, there are very good jobs you can get without going, (trades, etc).

I think Europe is better lol...

You can study and work and pay rent money as a waiter

Ok... is public education free there? How is it better? You can study, work as a waiter, and pay rent here in the US.

Edit: oh I see - you mean you can afford all those things at once?

If Europe is better, then why is their tech industry almost non existence?

I've heard 200 euros/year. Minimum wage is 11 euros/year. International students can study engineering at that price and work. Oh free healthcare too.

Skype was made over there as well. I know many developers over there. And of course, if you are making macs. Well they make cars, and wines. It means If they do it better with less time. Like example making cars will take Americans 20 hour while it takes Germans 10 hours. Then Germany will import cars instead.

As stated earlier, banks and oil/energy is where they thrive. While USA is more healthcare and tech

Maybe not as known but they got jobs. As stated they make money with energy and gas. And banks. So your evil bankers and oil oligarch are getting taxed so much there is socialism for everyone. Get rid of the evil bankers and oil money for green energy means no more socalism :)

You won't see it. Because it's all catered for Europeans. It's like a Chinese knowing Facebook is banned and asking what good tech is in America? When they are using wechat.

Why is it not popular world wide? Tiktok is a Chinese company and it is popular everywhere.

Is it because Europe taxes everyone up the nose and therefore, there is a lack of incentive to take a lot of risk like starting a business?

Nah. It's just in a more stable culture of non risk taking. Intercultural communication with business talks about this.

I've heard high skilled workers prefer to go to the US to work. My friends only go to EU after they can't go to the US, then Canada, Australia..

It's harder to go to UK. They're more strict with immigrants. So UK is not flooded with migrants. Therefore whoever can get in can find jobs easier.
Other European countries are very open/generous with immigrants.

You must admit making money is a strong motivation for a lot of people. There has to be a reason why people would spend the best years of their lives starting a business.

It is also hard to fire people in Europe. In tech, timing is so important. You must move fast....can’t do that when you can’t hire/fire fast.

Sometimes it's not always about money but stability

Sometimes making it to the playoff is not good enough. You want to win the championship.

You may want to find out why this german word is used in the USA as well. And why if you grow too tall as a poppy others will cut you off.

We will have to wait and see what would happen to Europe as a welfare state as refugees flood their countries.

So it's not going to be cult vs. cult. Kind of sad to hear it. I would have liked to have seen how zany the general election could have been.

So I guess it's just going to be old, bumbling, boring establishment Democrat vs an old, bumbling authoritarian fascist.

Again why only help the irresponsible ones? Why not give everyone everything back?

Two pharmacists that have worked 5 years. One paid 100k in loans in those 5 years. The other invested that same 100k and if now worth $150k but also now has no loans!!!

Tough luck responsible person.....
This is exactly what i told my friends haha i paid bare minimum and am on pay as you earn plan. Bought a house, started mutual funds, invested money elsewhere. By the time my friends who paid $1500-2000 a month for 10 years to pay off the loans, i would have assets worth 4-5 times theirs and have made enough on my investments to pay off my loans as well.

If you are not taking risk into consideration. If the stock market crashed, then you would be in trouble.

The stock market has been going up so it looks easy but by paying off his loans early, your friend is saving 6.8% interest and doesn’t have to worry about the tax bomb.

Cult? Just because a majority of Democrats don't believe in giving irresponsible people free stuff doesn't make it a cult.

Bernie is the one with a cult following. The problem is they are too lazy to vote.

The funniest thing about Bernie followers is they don't actually care about other people, they just want everything free for themselves.
I think he referred to cult vs cult being trump vs bernie

Elizabeth Warren fked over Bernie by staying in the race.

Buttigieg and Klobuchar helped Biden a lot by dropping out. I think the DNC saw what happened with Trump and wasn't going to allow that to happen with Bernie.

Um I think you are forgetting about Bloomberg. If he wasn't in super Tuesday, Biden would have crushed Bernie.

What's interesting is after all this complaining from millennials, it's going to be almost tied when all the delegates are designated.

No one forced them to endorse Biden. Bloomberg has $50B and he has also endorsed Biden. You think the DNC is going to push him around?

Bernie is going to lose because his solutions are outdated and they pit one group against another group. He talks about student loan forgiveness but nothing about controlling cost.

This is what drives me crazy - the student loan debt issue is a big problem, but unless you contain costs and control tuition increases, forgiving student loans is just a temporary fix, 5 years down the road, we are in the same boat.

Biden’s proposal is 5% IDR and 20yr forgiveness (no tax bomb).

PSLF proposal is 10k/yr x 5 years

Honestly, I don't think Biden give a damn about student loan forgiveness.

Honestly, I don't think Biden give a damn about student loan forgiveness.

Some campaign intern came up with it probably.

Intern 1) “so what’s more conservative than full forgiveness, but to the left of what trump is proposing?”
Intern 2) “::::spews out numbers:::”
Biden) Whatever he said. What’s next?

I'd rather have Biden than Bloomberg to be honest. I can tolerate a Biden presidency if he chooses a progressive VP like Tulsi Gabbard.

What I don't understand is why did the Southern African Americans vote for Biden instead of Bernie when Biden has a history of being racist, opposing busing, supporting the National Crime Bill, opposing legalizing marijuana when Bernie marched with MLK, supports legalizing marijuana, supports criminal justice and bail reform, plus Bernie has endorsements from Killer Mike, Cardi B, and Public Enemy.
