Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

So have the people with acceptances to USA, have you guys got your scholarship info yet? Also, budregigar767 what is your status? I think last time you said you were waiting on the scholarship info before deciding on South or UAB

Followup - has anyone heard from South about scholarships yet? I had heard that mailings about them were going out but hadn´t seen anything or heard on this board.

I don't think I'm getting one. I know someone who received one, though.

I know of two scholarship recipients. They heard last wednesday.

I know they sent out some notifications today as well.

Does anyone know when the deadline is for filling out fadsa for USA? I don't really know anything about the financial aid system

I don't know if there is a deadline but the sooner the better so that the finaid office can set up an award package for you.

Also, bump. Oh and I dropped a 38 on the mcat last month... made that thing my bitch not that it matters now.

Thought you'd just mention that, huh?

That's crazy awesome. You ninja'd the hell out of that thing. Maybe you should send UASOM the score report anyway and demand a scholarship. Or at least a free copy of the damn Robbins book.

I'd be wanting some cash for that 38 too!

yeah really. I did send them an email about it but I am not holding out hope for getting any money out of it. The scholarship application deadline was April 16.

Man 38k in loans at least this year... talk about a wakeup.

Oh and if you go to J Clyde anytime soon the Eye of the Hawk is AWESOME. So is the Carlsberg Elephant.

I am not a huge fan of the champagne tasting beers (Duvel for instance) but I am really enjoying the new beers overall.

Eye of the Hawk is indeed awesome. I bought a six pack of White Hawk IPA a couple days ago...also good. I'm most excited about the J. Clyde getting Great Divide's stuff today. Yeti is one of my favorite imperial stouts. Apparently everything from Great Divide and Tommyknocker is 3 bucks a glass tonight. I'm trying to decided whether or not I should take them up on that.

EDIT: Just found out from the owner that the Great Divide truck didn't show up today. Event is has been postponed until Saturday. Somewhere to go after Brewfest!

I need to try the Rasputin, is it on tap at J Clyde? Speaking of, what are some of the new stouts and porters at J Clyde? My all time favorite is Founder's Breakfast Stout..prefer it over their Kentucky Breakfast Stout (ranked #4 on beeradvocate I think and can sometimes be found on ebay)...ah i no longer have to resort to ebay now that the hops are free!

I love the Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout! I have a bottle of their espresso stout, maybe i'll drink it if i'm accepted to USA. If you like the taste of coffee, I highly recommend a bottle of Southern Tier Imperial Coffee Stout, I prefer it over the Yeti

I haven't been to J. Clyde since the hops were freed, so I can't tell you for sure. Jerry has the beer list posted on the website, though, including the new stuff. They do have Old Rasputin, but I can't remember if it's bottle or draft. Either way, I remember it being particularly expensive even for gourmet imperial stout. I'm definitely going there tomorrow for the new Rogue XS stuff they're breaking out.

Founder's and Breakfast are both great in my opinion, but it's been a long time since I've had either. Have you tried Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout? Also delicious. I recently had a bottle of Dogfish Head World Wide Stout. It was very unique, almost un-stoutly in a way. It tasted like half Old Rasputin and half Raison d'Etre, if that makes sense.

I had the brooklyn but that was when I didn't know that cold=bad for these types of beers...nonetheless I remember liking it and seeing the potential of a warmer version...what do you think about young's double chocolate stout? it's more chocolate bitter than rogue's but less hoppy bitter...kinmount willie is a really good oatmeal stout (very different from samuel smith oatmeal which i hate), although it is like 4% alcohol...the most drinkable in this class I would say..as far as dogfish, i haven't had any of their beers

Old Rasputin is only $7.99 for a 4 pack at basically any Piggly Wiggly in the Birmingham area. Check out freethehops.org, they have a forum, listing where the different high grav beers are

Young's would be my favorite in the sweet stout/milk stout category by far. I've actually contacted the company's US importer multiple times to figure out why we can't get the stuff here. They gave me a uber-lame excuse, saying that there isn't a market for it in Birmingham. A couple days ago I sent the guy another email informing him of our new law. If he doesn't relent, I'm going to the corporate office with a grappling hook strapped to my back and a dagger in my teeth.

I'm sure everyone who monitors this thread for its stated purpose is REALLY enjoying our beer discussion.

I forsee beer as being a major factor in me keeping my sanity in medical school.

Also, the UASOM c/o 2013 forum is up if anyone wants to know.

Also, porn, midgets, creamed corn.

I bought Young's Double Chocolate from the Piggly Wiggly down by Lakeview about a year and a half ago. I never saw it again after that.

Congrats on all of your acceptances, guys. Hopefully I'll be in your shoes in a year.

I'm starting to think that I'm never gonna get that acceptance email from USA...this will be torture until the very last day :(

I'm on south's wait list as well as UASOM... havent heard from either but my friend is on south's wait list (he was straight up declined from UASOM) and he heard this past monday that he was accepted. Mark Scott first called him and told him then he received an email later that day... anyone else heard from south lately?

I really can't beleive this just happened but I got into UAB from the lower third! This is insane.... :)

Congrats! I hate being lame and asking this question, but will you pick UAB or USA if you get off the list?

I have a friend who got in off the third tier today as well. And it's only June 5. This IS crazy.

I will probably withdraw from south's waitlist since I'm leaning towards UAB but I'm just going to take the weekend and talk it over with my family.

wow, that is awesome! congratulations! I knew that a lot of people had been taken off the middle tier, but I had no idea they would start drawing from the lower tier. I guess this means there is hope for everyone.

yea that is crazy!!! They must have been really strict with acceptance this year. Or the raise in tuition turned away some people!! Congrats!!!

That's all you need to start out with. If you need anything else, it will show up on Blazernet. Most likely, you will also need to fill out a title IV form and a resource information sheet, but you don't need to do anything unless it tells you to do so on Blazernet (I believe).

For those accepted from the waitlist, has anybody's financial aid award shown up on Blazernet yet? I was just curious how long it takes. Also, has anyone from the waitlist gotten their offical letter of acceptance in the mail? I know during the regular part of the cycle (October-March) official letters aren't sent out but once a month, but I imagine they are sent out a little more frequently between March-June. For those who have gotten their letters, what all is included in the packet?

My finicial aid posted early in May but I completed my FASFA in Jan. and I attended UAB undergraduate so those could be a factor.

Has anybody gotten any information from South about when we are supposed to send them stuff like transcripts, immunizations, etc? UAB had a pretty organized timeline about when they want everything.

Thats awewsome, congratulations!

I almost wish I wouldn't have known this though... the lower third at UAB is my only hope for this year.

Requirement says _ atleast 90 credits from undergrad!!!!!!!!!
I only have 64 undergrad credits with 197 graduate creidts?
Am I an eligible candidate for med school (at university of alabama)?

ummm... how did you get into grad school without an undergrad degree?

more info!

Does anyone know how big the UAB waitlist is? And how long they will accept people off of it?

Last year, people thought the waitlist was 60 people. This year I think people have heard Dr. Smith say that there are 90 people on the list. It is possible to get accepted up to the day of orientation which actually happened 2 years ago.

Is anyone else distraught as I am with not hearing anything from USA? I can't even enjoy my summer in this mindset

I've heard of two getting in off the waitlist, and I think that's including the same guy from fairhope

I don't know if this makes anyone feel better or worse, but if you look back in this thread from last year a bunch of people got off USA's waitlist in mid July.

It happens. Several years ago a friend of mine from HSV got accepted to UASOM just a few days before classes started. She and her husband ended up in a rush to get her financial aid squared-away, go house hunting, etc.

Well, about 20 minutes ago I got a call from Mark Scott saying I got accepted off the waitlist at South! So I guess there is still hope for everyone out there still waiting, don't give up. Even if you don't get in this year, keep on trying if you really want to be a doctor. Last year, I got a straight rejection from South and didn't get in off the waitlist at UAB. I would also like to thank everyone on this board, without getting all this valuable information from this board, I probably would have gone crazy.
