I can't stress this enough. If you are considering the military for a career, you need to specialize. There is no way around it. In order to get promoted and be taken seriously, you HAVE to specialize. If you are planning on getting out, do the one year, you won't regret it. I know the thought of another year is a tough pill for many who are planning on getting out to swallow, but you really need to do it for yourself.

Hawkeye,

Thanks for the info on the bonus. You mentioned that dentists usually made Major at 6 years. When can you expect to make LTC?

Jmick,

A with in the zone promotion usually occurs at the 6 year interval. Previously, the 0-6 was quite competitive but the Army has hard times coming in that the DC has an hour glass shape. There are numerous 0-3 and numerous 0-6 individuals. Many of the 0-3 people will leave after their initial ADSO unless they specialize. This has left the DC with minimal people in the 0-4,0-5 ranks so it works well for people coming in now. There are many 0-6 people who can retire at anytime but there are a number of them who are getting paid a significant amount of money to be email jockies so they will hang on as long as possible. So back to your question every 6 year ideally.

Is the 2 year AEGD considered when getting assigned a step in GS15 salary when say applying for a job with the VA (federal service)?

Obviously a new dentist right out of 1 year AEGD (private) to the VA would start at GS15/step 1. How about the following?

1 yr Army AEGD + 3 years experience

2 yr Army AEGD + 3 years experience

The above is based on a student taking a 3 year HPSP loan.

I would check my sources, on the GS 15. I know that GS dentists for the Army most often are GS 12's. I know that once they had an opening for a GS 13 when I was at Sill, but they wanted someone who was a "specialist" ie, former 2 year AEGD. They were going to do alot of crown and bridge. I can't imagine they would offer a GS 15 to someone right out of school. You have to have 6 months to a year of experience even to get a contractor slot with an Army post, let alone GS. If you can get it though, kudos.

For the ARMY, AF probably a little more competitive:

O4 automatic at 6 years

O5 slightly competitive. However if you have "specialized", pretty much automatic 6 years TIG (12 years in the service)

O6 Pretty much have to have a specialty, board certified definately recommended, some military schooling, CGSC (command and general staff college) etc. But if you check your boxes and keep your nose clean, between 18-20 years you should make O6.

Remember that you must have 3 years TIG (time in grade) to retire at that rank. So if you pin on O6 at 19 years, you can retire at 20, but you will retire as an O5. (your retirement pay will be calculated based on your last 3 years ie. 1 yr O6 + 2yr O5)

I will try to look into it. Based on the starting salaries on usajobs they are all around 93 or so. I don't know if that takes into account the 10-20k housing adjustment they add on. Even if it didn't, at lowest it seems you'd be GS14 but I could be wrong.

I know that you simply need 1 year residency before you can get any dental officer slot with the VA.
