2019 MHA: Applied, Interviewed, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just invited to an interview at JHU! Anyone have any tips/interviewed with them yet?
I'm a first year student in the MHA program. Feel free to shoot me a message if you'd like to discuss a bit more in depth about the program etc.

For those accepted to Cornell we have started a class of 2021 page on FB. Also, there is a prospective students page with current students if you want to ask questions and are still undecided.
would you mind posting a link to the fb 2021 page? I can't seem to find it

I’m the group creator. I can’t link as I’m on mobile, but the exact wording is “Cornell Sloan MHA Class of 2021”

As a general note for all; please only request to join if you are planning to attend Cornell for their MHA, not if you’ve been accepted to the program and are waiting for other offers. Trying to keep it to the attending class of 2021 only. Cheers everyone.

If you can’t find it, message me and I’ll invite you when I get some time.

Anyone else expecting to hear back from a few schools this week? The wait is killing me

I have never been to an interview what kind of responses do they expect from questions like why mha or why this university? What did you say?
Yeah I would say just make sure you know why MHA and why umich. It really depends on the professor that you get, but it’s pretty informal and more like a discussion than an interview, so make sure to have questions ready and you’ll do fine!

Thank you! They should let you know by mail, thats how I got mine. Now comes the dilemma of choosing between USC Full Ride or Cornell with a Small Scholarship. Any thoughts anyone? (PS: I want to eventually have a career in Southern California)

My take on this (I'm a first year MHA at JHU), is that while brand name matters to a certain extent it is not as important as a lot of people once assumed. USC is still a really great school and if you know you want to eventually be situated back in SoCal then to me it seems like the best choice is USC. Not having to worry at all about tuition is such an amazing thing and I'm sure USC has a lot of alumni connections that they can get you in touch with for when you enter the job market. I would encourage you to reach out and speak to current students at both universities though as well. Since most of these universities fall underneath the same sort of accrediation committees (CAHME), a lot of the competencies you are required to learn will be taught by both universities so the education difference is negligible at best.

Again this is just the perspecitve of a current student so take it how you will but knowing what I know now I probably would have picked OSU which is in columbus since I know I want to end back in Ohio for my career (lived there most my life). If I had picked that route it would be substantially cheaper and to me I would have gotten the same sort of educational experience that most the universities offer. That's not to say that JHU hasn't been an amazing experience for me, I just meant with other factors in play etc.

As someone who is attending Cornell, it'd be great to have you join the Sloan Program :). However, I do think what region of the country you want to be in post graduation is a huge factor in selecting grad schools. Cornell has a great program, but USC will have more notoriety on the west coast. Combined with the full ride, I would go to USC if I was you.

Anyone know when the University of Minnesota's admissions committee meets?

Does anyone have any insight on how much the prestige of the school itself matters versus the actual program when seeking jobs in the industry? I know both are important, but wanted to know when choosing a school which aspect may have an edge over the other.

I think on Mondays, not sure if that's every week though. I got my decision a few weeks ago around 12:30 a.m. Monday night/Tuesday morning!

Generally those will go hand in hand but there are a few schools that don't. My take on it is if it is CAHME certified you'll learn a lot of the same material no matter where you go. There are a few factors to consider though. When choosing between whatever schools consider where you plan on wanting to work when you finish your degree and see which school has a stronger presence/alumni network there. Another factor I would consider is are you interested in consulting or hospital administration? Dependent on your answer I would research and find the schools that have the necessary connections for whatever you are interested in. Program reputation is important and some can argue the "prestige" of a school but to be honest with you as long as it's in the top 20 (argument could be made outside of that) I wouldn't worry. I've yet to hear of an organization not accepting an applicant because of their school. A lot of time it has to do with their qualifications or interview skills.

Just got back from an AMAZING visit to Cornell! Great people, great program, and amazing opportunities! Definitely making my decision harder, but no matter what decision I make, those of you who are attending Cornell are in for a treat! I also heard from the director of the program that the new, updated US News Rankings for Health Management programs are coming out on March 5th.

super late but can't hurt,

School: large state school
GPA: Cumulative and Major 3.80/4.0
GRE: 312/ 5.5W
Major: Public Health with a concentration in business
administrative internship within top ranked hospital for 3+ years, 500+ patient facing hours, presented at conferences, 2 manuscript publications

I thought I wanted to stay at my undergrad institution but panicked last minute and decided to apply to other schools the very last week of January. Din't think i would have almost all decisions a month later.

Applied: GWU, Pitt, VCU, Cornell, Columbia, Tulane
Interview: GWU, Pitt, VCU, Columbia, Tulane
Waitlist:
Rejected:
Accepted: Pitt, GWU, Columbia, Tulane (+$$) , VCU
Attending:

Does anyone have insight on GWU vs Columbia? I recently visited Columbia and LOVED what they had to offer but their program is more than double the size of the other one's I've been looking at. Also, Cornell said they've been had an unusual influx of application's this cycle and could take a while for anyone to get back to me.

I was wondering if anyone has input on UMich vs. Johns Hopkins University:

UMich:
- Ranked 1
- Larger class size (~60-70)
- Two years in the classroom
- Bigger alumni network (I think? Because it's a bigger school)

JHU:
- Ranked 7
- Smaller class size (~25)
- One year in the classroom + one year of work, so it's accelerated and you graduate with a year of experience under your belt
- It also has the "name" because JHU is a huge name/brand in the medical world

I'm conflicted on what factors to weigh more/less so any input would be much appreciated! Thanks!!
