Congrats on all the interview invitations, everyone! Now that many programs seem to have offered a first, and in some cases a second round of invites, how many are you planning to attend? How are you planning to mix reach versus safer programs?

I think 10-11 max. I'm going to do 2 or 3 "safe schools", and the the rest will be other places I'd like to go to most.

Question for my future colleagues: Given what we know about when first invites were sent, would you be willing to bump first-wave invite(s) from a good program for a second or third-wave invite from programs slightly higher up on your early rank list? In other words, I'm wondering if a later-phase invite reflects an initial lower preference for the applicant or the program just reviewing some applications later than others. I realize this will likely be pure speculation on our end, but just wondering how you you all are approaching it.

I applied to 13 schools and going into it I told myself I would only interview with 9 (my financial savvy spouse is holding to my #9 agreement). My initial selection of schools was based on programs (I want CP only) and regional choices with strong research, NIH funding (school wide), and a molecular genetics fellowship. Now I've received interviews and dug deeper into each school; coming to realize that some of the initial selected schools do not offer the research fields I am interested. I've booked my less favorable schools in the latest spots (like December or early January) and may drop their interview as I progress thru the interview cycle.
As far as later-phase invites: I do speculate that you are correct about "initial lower preference" - even with that in mind I would not reject an interview with a school I really wanted to interview with no matter how late in the game they are.

Don't take that into consideration. If you get an invite, the program likes you and you have a good chance at matching there. Decide your interviews based on the programs you view most highly, and be sure to make your interest known.

Hi Mr. Derp, thanks for weighing in. What would you say is the best way to make your interest known, especially at great programs where interest is kind of self-explanatory?

I think giving very specific examples of why you are interested in the program is key, as well as having genuine enthusiasm. Don't give vague and generic responses.

I was also planning to do 8-9, as the scheduling is getting increasingly complex and travel will be expensive.

I agree with Mr. Derp - don't talk yourself out of interviewing because of the invitation sequence - you never know what will happen once your foot is in the door.

Oh, of course...I thought he meant prior to the interview. I'll definitely do some thorough research before each visit.
 
How long do you recommend waiting before contacting schools you haven't heard from?

I was really really hoping to interview at some California schools, but have not heard back from them. I'd like to think I'm a strong applicant (MD/PhD, Step 250s, AOA, multiple pubs, not socially awkward).

With that app, you should get interviews from every place you applied to. Programs only have a set number of invites to give out, and assuming you're from a different geographic region, they may hedge their bets a bit and give a lesser candidate an interview if they're closer geographically under the assumption that they have a better shot at landing west coast applicants. I don't think it's a bad idea or too early to send the PD an email and explain your interest. Don't ask for an interview, but let them know you're interested and specifically why you're interested. The worst that could happen is they decline and you don't get an interview there, which would've happened anyway. Nothing to lose. On the other hand, if you are from the west coast, your app may have a red flag that you're not aware of. Of course, this is all under the assumption that the programs you're talking about have already sent out a wave or two of invites. If they're not yet on your guys' list, sit back and lay low - they'll be coming.

Thanks for the reassurance. I am from a different geographic region, so I'm hoping that may be part of the situation. I've heard back from several well-ranked academic locations, so I didn't think it was a lack of professional achievement...

You're absolutely correct about sending them an email. I think I just needed to hear it from someone else. Coming from a mid-tier institution, I haven't had much in the way of advising so I feel like I'm mostly making this up as I go.
 
Has anybody heard specifics about the interview trail?Are interviews at some places more stressful than others? And do any of you know which places, if any, have the reputation of being malignant/not a good learning environment/that sort of thing?

I appreciate the replies mdphdpath and Mr Derp! CorrelateClinically, I'm in a similar boat as you (minus the AOA) and was hoping to get an invite from UCSF. I might reach out at some point myself if still no word.
 
Just FYI:
I had my first interview the other day at Houston Methodist. I was able to drive to it and I reserved the hotel closest to the hospital. The hospital complex is HUGE (at least to me it is) with many medical training programs within one location. I am so very glad I got the hotel within walking distance - since we met at 7:20 am. That would be my first recommendation - close hotel so you don't mess with parking, driving in a large unfamiliar town.
I met with the program director and assistant director of AP & CP. It was a little awkward meeting with the AP director (just some dead air) because I am CP only interested. I had done my research about the school but I still lacked interesting questions for the AP director (my 2nd recommendation would be prepare for who you might meet; but not have much in common with).
I'm glad I've gotten that first interview out of the way - I don't think I blundered things too badly; but it is hard to tell especially since everyone I met was so extremely nice and happy.

I guess I was under the assumption NOT to do that. Am I bad at the playing the game? lol.
Is this something most people do.... contact programs you are very interested in but have not heard from? What do you say.... "Hi, I haven't heard from you all. I am really interested. What else can I do????"

And I guess another bit of advice I am looking for....
I am waiting for my Level 2 results around Oct 18th (Level 1 was poor) to put in more applications. Anyone have any thoughts on whether that is a good idea? Or put them in now? I am worried if I put them now, my Level 1 will cause them to say no thank you and I wont get a second when level 2 comes in. But I hate to keep waiting too in case programs have already filled their interview spots- but it is only 2 weeks. You know... the normal application neurosis!

Hi guys I have a question, I have filled all my 4 letter slots when applying and recently I have asked a faculty member in one of the Pathology programs I did a rotation at, to support my application. Do you think it is a good idea to ask him to send a letter of recommendation to the programs I got interviews at directly or programs I didn't get interviews at yet but interested in. P.S; I applied to a lot of programs, I don't think he can send an email to each single one of them. I really don't know what to do but I know that his word will carry a lot of weight as he is a fellowship director.

I have gotten one. And I feel pretty secure about it even before interviewing. Would just like more of course! :)

Im not sure how much help this is, but I'll just throw it out there:

one of my friends applying to general surgery just asked his program director about when to e-mail programs they were interested in. The program director responded that you should definitely contact programs you hadn't heard from and were interested in, but said it was a few weeks to early to do so. I don't know if that also applies to pathology or not but again, just thought I'd throw it out there incase anyone found it helpful.

I'm a california native currently at a NY med school also trying to get CA :) and no worries, not too much on the CA front so far (Cedar-Sinai 10/7, stanford 10/4, loma linda & harbor-UCLA we got your app and will let you know). Granted my scores aren't nearly as competitive, but I'm currently doing an away rotation at Stanford and in talking to some of the current first years they said the CA invites seemed to come later. Hope that helps a little!

I put together a pathology residency application guide for my school after I finished with the process, and here's what I listed for questions I was asked:

#1 MOST COMMON QUESTION:
Do you have any questions? It's okay; this is not a trick question. I totally understand if you're questioned out.
Note: ALWAYS be ready to think of another question. Even if you feel thoroughly “questioned out,” there’s always something more you could ask. You never want to appear tired and disinterested.

VERY COMMON QUESTIONS:
Why pathology?
Why [your medical school]?

How'd you end up in ___ [place you went to medical school, if out of state]
What are you looking for in a program?
Where do you see yourself in five / ten years?
Do you have any areas of interest within pathology?
Tell me a little about yourself.

LESS COMMON:
Why our program?
Would you be willing to move to this city / part of the country?
Do you have a spouse or family that would have to move with you?
What do you like to do for fun?
I see that you… (hobby / interest listed in application)
Tell me about your research.

MOST DIFFICULT QUESTION:
What could we do to improve our program to attract more candidates like you?

Regarding interview format, it was overwhelmingly one-on-one interviews. One program included an interview with the entire group. It was meant to somewhat relaxed; we took turns answering interesting questions we had pulled out of a hat.

Do you think it is a good idea to ask him to send a letter of recommendation to the programs I got interviews at directly or programs I didn't get interviews at yet but interested in. P.S; I applied to a lot of programs, I don't think he can send an email to each single one of them. I really don't know what to do but I know that his word will carry a lot of weight as he is a fellowship director.

If you've already submitted many applications with four letters, can you even go back and change them at this point? You can add letters if you had less than four, but at this point I think it's too late. You should look into this.

On another note, they all have to be submitted through ERAS; you cannot have this faculty member try to directly email all the programs. It doesn't work that way anymore.

I am worried if I put them now, my Level 1 will cause them to say no thank you and I wont get a second when level 2 comes in. But I hate to keep waiting too in case programs have already filled their interview spots- but it is only 2 weeks. You know... the normal application neurosis!

In my opinion this is a really tricky situation. I would definitely reach out to a mentor or someone from your school who can guide you with this. Is your score that low that you think you'd automatically get rejected? Take a look at recent Match reports to look at that kind of data to gauge your competitiveness.
